  1. Windows Vista has received its share of criticism for not being able to take full advantage of solid state drives, but that is going to change once Microsoft’s next-generation operating system hits the market. At least according to the software giant, which will provide a briefing titled “Windows 7 enhancements for solid state drives” at the WinHEC conference this week. The company is expected to talk about file system optimizations as well as overall support for solid-state drives, Windows 7 support for Netbooks and the lifetime of inexpensive SSDs that are used in such devices. Other solid-state drive related talks include one by Seagate, titled “Is your disk drive going away?”, where the company will talk about solid-state drive platforms and hybrid hard disk drives. 2. Contrary to what many of us would have thought, up until earlier this month it was still possible to buy a license for Windows 3.x (although support was ended in 2001), mainly for use in embedded systems like cash registers or ticketing systems and notably to power the in-flight entertainment systems on some Virgin and Qantas long-haul jets. But now, about 18 years after its release, the aging operating system is finally being put to rest. Windows 3.x was the first windows-based operating system to seriously rival Apple’s Mac graphical user interface, and largely responsible for catapulting the software giant to fame and industry prominence. Part of the reason Windows 3.x was still around at some levels is its minimum requirements, which included a 10MHz 8086/8088 processor, 640K of RAM, 7MB disk space and a CGA, EGA or VGA graphics card. The fact that it was 100% compatible with older MSDOS applications helped too. Sourced from Microsoft finally discontinues Windows 3.x - TechSpot News
  3. In its boldest effort yet to win over emerging businesses, Microsoft is launching a new program that will allow some start-ups to use its server softwarehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif free of charge for up to three years. Dubbed BizSpark, the project is open to private companies around the world that are less than 3 years old and make less than $1 million in annual revenue. Under the program, qualified startups will not only receive a range of Microsoft products, from Visual Studio to Windows Server, SQL Server and others, but they’ll also gain access to the company’s technical support team and powerful public relations machine. This is certainly great news for start-ups and, of course, also gives Microsoft a way to promote the use of its software at a time when open-source alternatives continue to gain traction, and rivals such as Google and others are promoting their cloud platforms for building web applications. 4. Seems that the credit crunch is affecting some of the bigger companies too...............
  5. Dell has begun asking employees to “voluntarily” take up to five days off without pay as part of an effort to cut costs this quarter. The unusual request was made via a memo from CEO Michael Dell, in which he highlighted a 10 percent workforce cut announced in 2007, and suggested a new round of layoffs could begin if these measures don’t achieve the desired results. The company also instituted a global hiring freeze, is offering an enhanced severance package for employees who voluntarily leave the company, cutting travel budgets, and reducing the number temporary and contract employees. Dell did not provide a monetary figure for the savings it expects from these moves, though it’s being reported that these latest efforts are intended to result in additional savings beyond the $3 billion in annual expenses the company previously pledged to cut over the next three years. 6. I was sure that I saw some the other week  Yes that one seems fine - :D Dont forget a pic! That Viewsonic is only VGA output
  7. Reminds me of the Peter Kay joke when he says ''Monsters, its not monsters you need to worry about, its burglars they come through the windows'' lol
  8. Your welcome and if you have a look around some of the didgimate ones are around that price - they are a budget one, but my friend got a 22" one for about £100 and he has had no complaints (well 1 dead pixel in RED) lol but should still be able to get one if you wanted - I have the Viewsonic VX2025 and they were £200 at the time - I had a look on google shopping and have seen them at around £130 they are slightly more BUT they are the best monitor I have ever used - other than screen size it is better than my old 30" DELL ;)
  9. Nev, It CAN be done that way, but it is far better to operarte a dual boot system
  10. JaZz did you install the intel chipset driver when you installed the MOBO drivers?
  11. JaZz did you install the intel chipset driver when you installed the MOBO drivers?
  12. Its ok - as long as you have some kind of encrytion on your router (then people who could actually hack it would not be worth their time) :D Oh sorry you did say paranoid didnt you - dont read the bracketed part lol
  13. After a look on the LG site it only has a D-sub Get OEM - its fine, and cheaper and OEM HDD's are fine - you just dont get cables or screws or an instruction manual with it! who needs that stuff anyways :D
  14. Its fine - you will get some traffic send even when you are not using the device
  15. Few questions from me:- Are you overclocking? What make is the PSU that you have in it at the moment? What is the MOBO make and model? What CPU are you using? It could be a faulty capacitor but these are only faulty on cheap boards, hence the question above, when you say that the PSU was sat for a while, was it in a box or just left of a shelf - as there could be alot of dust in the PSU and causing it to shut down. Come back to us and we will help further.
  16. Glad its all sorted :)
  17. Phil, Is there any reason why you have not installed SP3?
  18. Ok - do you know what the Caddy uses - I am guessing that it was once in Mirrored and now is in JBOD mode
  19. Hi, Welcome to FPCH :)
  20. If it has mains power then it should work as I said before - did you check the device manager?
  21. It will be a very old onboard GPU (graphics) it probably only just has 32 colours - you would need to find a GPU (very unlikely) or upgrade to newer technology.
  22. You dont format the partition - when you boot your pc there should be 2 options one lists the operating system and one says recovery console - or words to those effects - you click that and it runs you through it.
  23. I had a quick look, have a look here Printer Command Language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  24. I cannot see the top link, but I guess its just a USB one end and an IDE and MOLEX on the other end. It should work, did the cable come with a disk? some of these cables do as they are not a common piece of kit. DVD/CD drives are plug and play so should be picked up by the OS - see if the device is shown in device manager in the control panel and tell us if there are any yellow exclamation marks next to anything.
  25. He he - they weren't they just failed - we have no system builders at this place, they just ship them back to DELL - they probably have some seedy agreement lol Other than that I agree with all you said in your post :)
