  3. So I've heard alot of discussion about how Vista x64 has buggy/bad driver support and is generally less usable than x86; is this still the case?* I've been on Vista x86 since SP1 was in beta (and on and off since 4074 :) )... But I have 4GB extra memory I could stick in this beast if I could trust it. The hardware is all shiny and newish, so I figure there should be drivers available; and I'd love to run this beyotch on 8GB.* Currently I have 4GB installed but my massive array of hardware memory addresses limits my "physical memory available to windows" to 2.5GB. Also, I have 2GB XMS2 and the rest is Patriot 800MHz. Obviously, this resulted in a lower winbench (as I call them) after the "upgrade" to 4GB.* I do, however, tend to create a great demand for memory utilization.* Does anyone have tips on DIMM placement order (or BIOS settings that don't involve overclocking cuz I'm paranoid), or do I have to buy more XMS2? 4. On the final day of the PWN 2 OWN contest, only the Linux box was left standing. Vista fell after 2 days of intensive effort, the winner* used a flaw in the Java runtime to gain control of the Windows box. It wasn't all plain sailing though, Shane McCauley needed help from VMWare's Alexander Sotirov to get his code working. Apparently, Vista SP1 comes with additional security measures that he wasn't expecting. He also got a little help from co-worker Derek Callaway (does this mean they share the computer they won?) McCauley had this to say about his win: http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif PC World wrote:"The flaw is in something else, but the inherent nature of Javaallowed us to get around the protections that Microsoft had in place,"he said in an interview shortly after he claimed his prize Friday."This could affect Linux or Mac OS X." He chose to work on Windows because having done contract work for Microsoft, he's more familiar with their products. But onto the winner! Several attendees attempted to crack the Linux box, but none were successful. However, some of the show's 400 attendees had found bugs in the Linux operatingsystem, but apparently,* didn't want to put the work intodeveloping the exploit code that would be required to win the contest. Now what is that all about? I thought the whole idea of open source was to get this sort of thing out into the open. Still a good effort that shows that two other vendors still have some work to do. McCauley also had something to say about the Mac's showing at the event. http://ms-os.com/Themes/AlmostGlass/images/icon-quote.gif PC World wrote: Earlier, Miller said that he chose to hack the Mac because he thoughtit would be easiest target. Vista hacker Macaulay didn't dispute thatassertion: "I think it might be," he said. Full details at PC World Now I imagine there is going to be some to debate as to whether this is actually a Vista flaw, or a problem with Java. I would say both. The problem is caused by Sun, but it is also Microsoft's job to protect the user from weird behaviour in applications. I wonder if we're going to see increasing use of virtual machines for hijacking purposes. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  7. http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&thread.id=116332&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 I think "VP of Communications" gives it away the most. A company is setting up for disaster when they purposefully cripple their own products (for some precieved business interest). I guess that's what happens when the Engineers get taken over by the business types. This news is spreading over the 'net, and it will likely have a negative impact on their future business. * Pathetic. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  12. Hi, I just ordered 2 gigs of memory for my laptop, but I think I made a mistake.* My laptop (Inspiron 1520) supports 4 Gb of memory, but only has 2 slots. I was surfing and came across a good dell on a 2 Gb stick so I sort of bought it without even thinking about it. Now I started thinking... I don't actually know what the exact memory configuration is inside. I mean, I do't know if I have 2 x 1 Gb sticks or*a single*2 Gb stick. If, I only have a single 2 Gb stick inside now, woot! I will have 4 Gb (which was the intention when I bought this thing), but what if I have two 2 Gb sticks in there? I can't mix a 1 Gb stick with a 2 Gb stick, can I? Is there a way to tell what the configuration is without opening the case? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  14. I was playing with Flip 3D and thinking of ways it could be improved to be more useful, by giving the user actual useful features instead of just a 3d effect. However that led me to think of other ideas that can applied to Windows generally. I started thinking that as you flip through windows, the sounds from the application you have selected are at normal volume, and sounds from other applications are at low, background volumes; so the most audible app is the one selected. And given that, what 'mute when app is in background' option in the volume mixer, so that an application only plays sounds when you have the window in front? Could that also be applied in some way to managing windows in general? Right now, the Taskbar has a command "Show Desktop" which alternatively is "Show Open Windows". What if there were a similar command to "Show Top Window Only". Sure, if its something just on the taskbar menu most users would not access it. But what if there were a tray icon to click and manage windows? Or, setting a mouse button to call this function. So click the middle mouse button, and all other windows disappear, click it again, and they show up. That got me to thinking, and I set my side mouse button to Windows+Space, to show the taskbar. Wow, a nice alternative to auto-hide. (and why not be able to 'pin' the taskbar with a pin button, so you can have stick it on top temporarily, or change the on-top status with a single click ? ) At any rate, if the Windows team ever gets around to program windows groups on the taskbar, you could do "Show Group Only" as well. Ideally, btw, I think you should be able to use something like Flip3d to drag things between windows. Normally if you have a lot of windows open it can be a mess, but flip3d or expose are ways to temporarily arrange them, which can be beneficial in interacting with two windows. More...
