  9. At Lang.NET 2008, I caught up with two dynamic languages afficianados who have been working on a similar (and really hard)problem over the years: getting Ruby (a dynamic language) to run on a static virtual machine (JVM and CLR, respectived). Charles Nutter is a lead developer on the*JRuby project which aims to run Ruby "natively' on the JVM. Wayne Kelly is the lead developer on the now defunct Ruby.NET project (it's been*merged*into the*IronRuby project so Wayne and team's great work has not gone with the wind...)*which aimed to get Ruby to run on the CLR. Both Charles and Wayne are challanged by the same technical hurdles: Running dynamic code in a statically-typed environment with no support for continuations. This is really challenging and is the primary reason that Microsoft created the DLR... Here, we chat about that they're working on and what problems they face. Another interesting discussion with brilliant people at Lang.NET 2008. Enjoy. Listen to the podcast(MP3) Listen to the podcast(WMA) Download the Video Watch the Video More... 15. I'm tring to work out if there is a way to to do this with typed datasets... //Somewhere in code create a detached row var dt = newViews.UsersDataTable (); var row = dt.NewUsersRow (); //somewhere else in code //Now this doesn't work as the row has a reference to another DataTable, even though it's detached. DestData.AddUsersRow (srcData.Current); //This doesn't work as the row is detached DestData.ImportRow (srcData.Current); What I need is a factory that can create stand alone UserRow objects*that can then be added to*any DataTable, without me having to pass the row factory a reference to the destination dataset. This seems like*it should be the simplest task,*but I can't seem to make it work! Cheers, Stephen.* More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  16. I am fairly new when it comes to programming so you are going to have to hang in there with me.* If I say anything that makes your headscatch, you are probably rightfully doing so. I am a hardware designer and, because I work for a small company, got thrust into developing some software as well.* I had minimal software coding experience before this job, but have done some embedded C and some work in Visual Studio .net since working here. Considering my success with that, my company has also decided that I am the best suited to develp the software for our mobile device to communicate with our product via RS 232. FTR, nothing has been released yet. To test and to control the product during developement I created a visual studio project in C# to communicate via RS 232 to the development board which was successful. Now I want to do a similar thing for our Windows Mobile 5.0 device (iPAQ 2495).* The problem is that I am completely failing in my testing.* It is not like development for the desktop where I can just run the debugger and use the serial port. . . because I have to disconnect the serial port and connect it to my device in order to test. The problem is that when I do this the debugger, of course, says I have lost connection AND the programming running on the device freezes up. So any suggestions on what I should be doing?* I am just not sure which direction I need to be going. Thanks for the help Charlie More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  23. Hi Guys, I'm looking into new ways for me to handle the data access layer. The way i used to do it is have a set of classes that reflect the data, and then one or more classes that did the actual database communication and used the data classes for reference. I find this method a bit tedious*when the application gets larger however. If i look around Google for best practices on this topic, everyone talks about DataSets, but i highly dislike DataSets and find them pretty impractical. I definitely like having my own custom classes the most, however it hurts me deep when i have to have traits that reflect the database model in my classes. (relational stuff, like FK_OtherTableID). I know that the entity framework will solve this for us when it's done, but there's one thing i don't like about the entity framework, and that's the inability to separate the mapping completely from the classes you're working with, and only have the XML files to guide the framework. This means that you have to have specialized classes, with interface implementations and special attributes, which I'm not a fan of either. I might just be very picky, and need to come down to earth and pick one of the above. Or maybe there are completely other ways to go. So to round this up, I'm interested in knowing how you all like to do data access. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  24. I guys, I'm new in Windows CE 6.0 and Platform builder. I need to develop a printer driver. So I took a look at this sample : C:\WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\DRIVERS\USB\CLASS\PRINTER The idea is to take only this dll and to compile it without compiling all the Win CE image. An even better solution would be to create a brand new visual studio project for this dll. Could anyone tell me how to do that? Thanks... *** ** Ludo... More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
