  4. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080210-vista-capable-scheme-was-panned-as-misleading-at-microsoft.html Back in April 2007, a lawsuit was filed in the US District Court accusing Microsoft of unfairly and incorrectly labeling machines as "Windows Vista Capable." The PCs with the small sticker on them (pictured below) could indeed run Vista, but they only performed well with the most bare-bones edition: Vista Home Basic. In other words, there would be no Aero Glass, no Flip3D, no Media Center–no features that Vista was and is widely advertised to offer. Many customers felt like the company had ripped them off. Microsoft argued that it provided detailed information on the sticker program and that it was the customers' fault for not educating themselves before purchasing their new computers. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/350667_msftvista09.html Quoting extensively from internal Microsoft Corp. e-mails, plaintiffs' lawyers argued Friday that the company knowingly misled consumers by allowing PC makers to emblazon "Windows Vista Capable" stickers on PCs that could run only the most bare-bones version of the operating system. The new documents are the latest development in a lawsuit filed against Microsoft last year, charging that the company deceived consumers into thinking that the PCs they were buying could run Vista's most highly promoted features, even when they couldn't. The slogan was part of a campaign by Microsoft to maintain sales of Windows XP computers during the 2006 holiday shopping season after Windows Vista was delayed More... 11. Visual Studio's XSDs for XHTML1.x contain a few errors. For instance, they say that <img /> cannot be a member of (when it can), and that type="" is not an attribute of (it is). I've had a look for VS's XSD files, but I don't know which one is for XHTML. There's "xhtml.xsd" under %VS%\Xml\Schemas And there's "xhtml_strict-11.xsd" under %VS%\Common7\Packages\schemas\html Which one should I be editing? EDIT: Okay, this is a mystery. Both XSD files contain the right instructions, but for some reason the VS IDE is just ignoring it. Any ideas? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  16. The increased troll activity as well as anti-trolling is becomming a nuisance. Therefore I suggest ignore lists. These would work in that people would be able to setup which users to ignore. This ignorance could function on several levels: 1) ignoring threads started by users in the list, 2) ignoring posts by users in the list, 3) ignoring posts by and posts quoted from users in the list, 4) ignoring threads with posts from users in the list. These ignore lists would be private so trolls would not know if their posts had been ignored manually or mechanically. And users should be encouraged not to publicize their ignore lists. If the same user was ignored by many people, some graylisting of threads from this poster could be made (not censoring, just posting into the "grey folder"). More... 21. Following up from the WebKit browser discussion....Why should browsers such as IE render improperly written code? True, I know alot of websites are written with horrible code, and it's something that we really can't FORCE people to fix, but why not just build true standards compliance into a browser, release it and then allow people to "deal" with the failures?I know it's bad form, but come on, the "We have to run legacy code too" argument is only going to work till every bit of bad code dies which will be never. 24. Well, this might sound silly, but since they were released at the same time I am curious how much the Vista SP1 team talked to the Windows Server 2008 team to tell them "Hey, we're fixing this and this and this". In other words, I am making a poor assumption that Windows Server 2008 has same/similar technologies as Vista and now that SP1 for vista is out I am curious how many of those fixes are incorporated into Windows Server 2008 RTM out of the box?
