  5. Josh Holmes caught up with Chris Madrid after the ArcReady in Cleveland and interviewed him about the Microsoft Services Engine. This is a very cool open source solution that MCS (Microsoft Consulting Services) uses as part of their services offerings. Check out the project talked about in this episode at http://www.codeplex.com/servicesengine. http://channel9.msdn.com/Photos/380996.jpg Watch the screencast(WMV) More... 6. I'm looking the best/correct way to get the correct result ranking from a full text index search in SQL-2005 For this example I have a simple user table with the coulmns [Title, firstname, surname, EmpNumber, Comment] and I need to be able to deal with a seach query like 'Laura Levy', Levey', 'Something from the comments field'. Now this is nice and simple I can just create an full-text index on the users table and issue a*FREETEXT query like SELECT* FROM users AS u ** INNERJOINFREETEXTTABLE(janus_users,(title, firstname, surname, empnumber, comment),'*laura levy')as FT_KEY ***** ON u.userId = FT_KEY.[KEY] ** ORDERBY FT_KEY.[Rank] DESC And I get the results that I want, but the problem is*the user 'Laura Levy' is*burried down at result #25, the first 38 all having the same result ranking even though there is one result row that has both terms in it's columns. So I've ended up mashing all the columns into a single column in a view and indexing he view.* When I search on that, I get similar results but laura is now at row#1 with a ranking of 189 and row #2s*ranking is*way down with a ranking of 104. So really the question is how can I get the same results without the overhead of the view in the middle?* is there a way to weight the results so that if both seach terms are found in a row it ranks higher? Cheers, Stephen. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  11. Microsoft used to have a technology called English Query that would allow you to define a schema so that users*could*ask queries like 'all customers that brought productX'.* Since this has been removed from sql2005, I was wondering if anyone knew of a similar technology that could replace it. 15. I recently attended Lang.NET 2008 and, as expected, learned a great deal from some of the industry's finest language and compiler minds. Here, we meet Dan Ingalls and Allen Wirfs-Brock, two legendary Smalltalkers (contributors to the language). Dan Ingalls is well known for his work at Xerox PARC and his contributions along with Alan Kay to Smalltalk. Dan is also very passionate about Javascript.* So much so, that he's gone and created a very interesting Javascript-only project named Lively Kernel. And you can thank Dan for Bit blit. Allen Wirfs-Brock is currently working on some very interesting language enhancements that he can't talk about publicly :) Join us as we discuss a whole range of very interesting topics. Enjoy! 20. every day - task bar - "new updates available" check... its Windows defender i dont use this app (everyone knows it doesnt catch much) and ive gone in under defender/options and said - do not automatically download updates.. but it still does ive also tried to remove it - but its not in add remove - or windows features on the net ive checked and there seems to be many other people wanting to do the same thing - and there are workarounds that include either disabling autoupdate altogether (which i dont want to do) or safe mode / registry editing / rebooting which i also dont really do not wish to do. anyone here found a way to stop the defender update? *there should be the option "do not ask for this update" but there isnt. all you can do is unselect it - and close the window = it comes back and "reminds" you again grr More...
