In this video, we chat with Robert Flaming about application compatibility issues around Windows Installer for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Mark Taylor, from our first Application Compatibility video, sits in as well to fire off some important questions (well, questions that are perhaps more educated than I would ask :P). So if you work on a product that is using Windows Installer and you are planning on deploying your product to Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, make sure to tune in! This video is almost all audio (very little need for video), so feel free to download the audio file for that next car ride you have if you wish! We have excel 2003 and are trying to save out a "xml spreadsheet".* The mess of a file is created (sorry but why is it so diffiuclt for MS to save out clean proper tags like everyone else) but i notice rows which are completely blank or contain blank fields will have the particular XML tag completely removed.* The problem with this is Im expecting 7 columns when sometimes the column can be 5 or 3 or 7.* Is there any way to force excel to NOT remove blank fields from the XML file this way everyone contains the 7 tags to correspond with the 7 column fields in the excel file. Thanks More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I've had an exciting idea for a major new area of functionality for excel. I'd like to see the concept of translucent worksheet overlays implemented. I frequently use Excel to model quite complex IT systems and would derive major benefit from being able to visualise my raw worksheet data, the formulae which is being applied to my data, some form of graphical representation describing the relationship between the formulae and the cells they relate to. * I envisage being able to group formulae into layers and pull in the relevant layers (which may for example relate to subsystems within the model) as I need them.* This would alos serve as means to prevent information overload! This is just one way in which I see the transparency concept being use, I'm sure there are many others.* For example you could pull in graphs and all maner of graphical representations of data from colour coded, named tabs at the edges of a worksheet and understand how that models the underlying data.* Or even use the graphics as a means to assist in navigating multiple, large worksheets. What do people think? Grant. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I've seen on sale the Toshiba DynaDock that with a single USB connection along with an optical spd-if audio port, 5 USB2.0 ports, an ethernet port, microphone/line out jacks and a serial port also offers a DVI port, including a DVI-VGA adapter, that is managed by its own internal graphic controller that also seems to offer direct3d acceleration and also to run Aero. has somebody here had any experience with those USB graphic controllers? do they work fine on Vista? I finally got it! Yes! When I got home and hooked it up, it had a dead pixel!!! I researched online and people said that the retailer won't take it back (I just want to exchange it for a new one) if you have just one dead / stuck pixel; which I do. What are you all's past experiences with dead pixels? Did they retailer / manufacturer take it back? Unfortunatly the store is closed now bececause it's 10:30 PM right now. I am going to be very upset if I just spent $1400 for a machine with a dead pixel!!! More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hi guys, I've read most of the posts from others trying to come up with a suitable backup system. I've tried RAID mirror without much luck. This is what I'd like to do and I'm open to suggestions. We have three networked PC in our dispatch centre.* I want to install a USB external drive on each machine for daily backup.* In the event that the primary drive does not boot or fails,*we can boot from the USB drive and run until such time as the defective drive can be replaced and restored from the USB.* I thought it would be simple.* Anyone suggest how this can be done.* Oh yeah, we don't have a full time IT guy.* So the backups have to be automatic or with little human help... Thanks, Richard* More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Join me and Avner Aharoni, a Program Manager on the Visual Basic Team, as he shows us how to enable XML IntelliSense in Visual Basic using the XML to Schema Wizard.*Avner shows the differences between how IntelliSense works with axis properties on XDocument and XElement objects and speaks to how the wizard can infer multiple schemas from multiple sources as well as the affect XML namespaces have on IntelliSense. Get started with LINQ to XML in Visual Basic with these How-to Videos. And here are some good articles too. I bought the 299$ EEE PC a few weeks ago and after installing XP on it I found out it is unusable both because its celeron/SSD drive are too slow (slow boot, even with hybernation, and apps like office taking ages to load) and because the screen has a very low resolution, 800x480, that is not enough to view most websites and many applications windows/dialogs won't even fit on such a low res. now I've just finished setting it up for a better use as a little router and file/print server (it consumes a lot less power than a desktop PC or a recent laptop so it's perfect as a little home server). does somebody know if there's any cheap UMPC coming out that has at least a 1024x600 resolution and that isn't prohibitively expensive (more than 900$)? I just wanted to quickly pop in and say "hi" to everyone. I'm still a noob on the team so be gentle :P The other cool part is that Coding4Fun is also moving over to the evangelism network so we'll be able to show off some fun, cool videos there too like Clint's Skateboard Segway project *which is starting to come along, or some interviews with Johnny Lee who's done some amazing projects with Brian Peek's Wiimote .NET Library. Question: What other cool .NET projects, outside of Microsoft, do you think would be interesting to interview? PS - This is so much fun :) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
