Just a quick note, It maybe just your connection to Orange, as other Orange broadband users have also reported that it does indeed disconnect from time to time, sometimes quite often. If this is the case, then the only step on from that is to change Internet Service Providers to a different company. I too, used to be with Orange and also had these problems where my internet would disconnect randomly, just viewing webpages or doing small things. So I decided to change to a different provider and haven't looked back since :D Back in the day, Freeserve used to be a very good service, but since changing to Orange, in some people's minds, including my own, their rating for service has been degraded.

Have you always been with Orange for your internet? Has it ever worked properly when you were with them?

Hey Joey, One cause of this problem is a Boot Sector Virus. Please follow these steps of our Malware removal instructions and see if it resolves the problem. If not, read this article by Microsoft on this error code, here. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup Steps Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/printer-selection.gif ____________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2) Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from SCANWITH.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner02.gif __________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computer __________________________________________________ Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

Hello Lotti, Glad to have you here :D
-
Why would you want to overclock a laptop?:confused: Also, it isn't exactly possble as all / 99% of laptops are factory built and would therefore not contain parts that are made to take overclocked performance.

Bwalker! Glad to have you here :)

What do you mean by this? There is a limit to the amount of times it can be activated, generally it is 1. Once you have used up this activation, you must buy a new copy to install it on another machine. This is to stop pirating of Operating Systems. Therefore, if this has been activated before and has now reached the limit, your only choice is to purchase a new copy from a store or contact Microsoft to purchase additional licenses. I would also like to point out: Shown in the Windows XP SP2 Home License Terms: (Which can be found here) Therefore it IS owned by Microsoft, users just purchase a license to use it.

The 'mouse' is actually very odd ...
DirtyPolo replied to Mara's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I know bob, but I meant it in the way of such that unless you spend a lot of money on a wireless mouse, it will eat through batteries and changing them every week isnt really fun :) -

DirtyPolo replied to Mara's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Optical and laser are basically the same, But as wolfey says, you don't need to spend a lot on a mouse as only the gaming mice are expensive. As for wired or wireless, stick with wired, you dont want to mess around with fitting batteries and things. The only reason why I asked, was because in my wireless mouse, I sometimes get the same things happening to me that you had, when my batteries are getting low :P -

Newly built PC, front panel USB dead
DirtyPolo replied to Hound's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Okay but try to get one during the warrenty, just incase it IS the mobo. It is a bit strange, especially as ASUS are a very strong company in this area. -

I have known about stardocks programs for a long time, but I have also seen many problems caused by their programs, I once, used to want all these programs to customised every inch of my windows but after a few of their problems, I've learned the hard way :P Cost me a brand new copy of windows to get rid of the problems. But as well, on the other hand there are people who have had no problems at all. Just your choice, as long as you know the risks then that's all we can do

Hibernate is fine :P Just Vista cant Hibernate so I forgot about XP :) but yeah, substitute Hibernate for Sleep if you're an XP user and prefer that :D
-
What do you do, and what do you think you SHOULD do? I decided to ask this question after a good old "debate" between friends as we tried to work out what is best. I personally shut down but I believe it's good to put it to sleep as it uses only a tiny amount of power, and doesn't need the long startup time in the morning :) But what's your view? Also if you're using XP, you're allowed to choose Hibernate instead of sleep, forgot as Vista doesn't have that option! :D

DirtyPolo replied to Mara's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I agree with the solution of replacing it, an optical mouse, as you have described that you have, is not very expensive to replace :P [About £2.99 on ebuyer.com] Just a quick question, is it wired, or does it take batteries? I'm guessing it's wired but just making sure :P -
Speakers Recieving Radio Signal
DirtyPolo replied to DevoidSoul's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hey Devoid, I have the same speakers as you but luckily for me I do not have the same problem as you. :P It is an odd problem indeed, This maybe a bit basic but have you tried unplugging them and putting them back, into the PC? i've seen this remedy the same problem before in the past although I do not know how! :D -
As a reply to the part about getting cheap software, You can check out here, but you can only get about 4 programs with discount direct from Microsoft, and that only includes 1 OS Upgrade. Nowhere is very clear about what discounts students can get, There's news that depending on what degree you are doing, you might get it free or even cheaper, but there is not one site that has what is claimed at the "truth" not even microsoft, lol.

Have you tried pressing FN + F2, I believe this is the shortcut to enable it for your model. If not look on the f keys for an image that represents wireless and try that with the fn button.

Hey james, try these steps: - Start - All Programs - Bluetooth - Go to settings or wireless file transfer. - Once its open, a little Bluetooth icon should appear in your task bar (lower right of the screen). - Find it, right click and go to "Power On." Hope this helps.
