It does seem like there is a failure of either the power adapter or the battery itself. (or something in between) I would not mess with a machine that is still under warranty. The only quick check is to swap out the adapter and see if the battery is charging. (Of course all this assumes that everything was plugged in properly because you were clearly working off the battery.)

IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
BeeCeeBee replied to dog_day_sunrise's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
No problem, it is just one of several possible causes but do keep in mind that to much paste is just as bad as to little. Just think back a bit about what you did when you applied it. -

You are probably right unless the cooling issue is with the CPU and the heatsink paste. The fact that it is a home built machine simply brings this issue to mind without any evidence to support it. -

This is one of the most annoying messages that you can receive. It almost always relates to a hardware fault but that could be anything from a CPU heat problem to a fault in one of your RAM sticks. If it is a hardware fault it may not be a physical fault but a driver issue. There is a lot of trial and error involved. I would first check for overheating and then some trial and error tests with your RAM. There are hardware experts here that know far more than I do and it may be a good idea to let them weigh in first. -
Yep, the little guy even made me a friend. That being said, it's not his birthday but I hope it is a happy day anyway. :)

I tend to agree with PseFrank that the most likely cause is the inverter based on the description that you have given. If the backlight had failed you would get either nothing at all or some light areas and some blacked out. Inverters usually will go well before a backlight. I assume that is the "light source" you mentioned. Of course Frank is also right the there may be nothing wrong with the inverter beyond its connection but one way or another it would seem that the inverter is the culprit. She should ask the "IT expert" exactly what he actually changed.

Without opening my old machine I am a little vague about the precise wording but I should be close. Have you changed the resolution for your monitor itself by simply going to your desktop and right clicking on an empty part. Select properties and Screen resolution (In windows 7 ) in XP it may be labeled differently but the key is to get to the screen where the monitors show as numbered screens (1 & 2) set the resolution there and not in any card settings. The recommended resolution for your monitor should show there as well as a considerable number of choices.

Something is sending a E-Mail from me
BeeCeeBee replied to proton's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
In most cases it is just a program that has worked around the security of the webmail. I had exactly the same problem with gmail at one point but the only contact that I had was another email address of my own. I got spam from me. :D Changing the password will stop it but if there is another go around and it gets in again it will start all over. What it is looking for is a list of contacts to attribute to your name. If you look closely at the spam email and go into its properties you will see that it actually did not originate from your account it is only made to look that way. -
create multiply dated folders
BeeCeeBee replied to graygray1's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK I am confused. If you are just going forward you would only have to create one new folder each day. As for excel. In most instances there would be a single spreadsheet that covers a time period for sales. It could be a week, month etc. That spreadsheet can then filter out any given day for viewing. That being said you still have to manually create the spreadsheet and set the parameters such as time period. -
create multiply dated folders
BeeCeeBee replied to graygray1's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
In this case I just think your analogy is flawed. Most business software will of course date entries. Even the basics like Quickbooks will do that. Otherwise, I don't know of any business software that creates a new folder for all work on a certain day. In fact I can see where that would create some real problems. Most large businesses that use a server can isolate daily activity but that is not what you are looking for. Unless I am missing something (which is not unusual :) ) It only takes seconds to create and name a folder. After that just save everything that you do to that folder. -
create multiply dated folders
BeeCeeBee replied to graygray1's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Unless there is some software out there that will do that for you. (I sort of doubt it since it would really have to be fairly complex to go into your files and both sort and rename them) I think you are out of luck. If these pictures are from a camera most of them have software that dates and creates a folder for new pictures. That will not solve the issue regarding what to do with old files. -
curser continues but will not reload

Is you daughter at the same location as you? If not you may want to check your speed against what the ISP is supposed to be providing. If she is in your household and using the same internet connection the first thing I would do is make sure this is happening all the time and not just when you are both connected. There is always a possibility of an IP conflict. I would follow PseFrank's instructions and see if another browser willl work for you. If it does and you still prefer IE8 then try resetting it. If it does not work even with Firefox I think you may have a malware issue despite what the scans may tell you. It may become an issue for the Malware Removal Specialists to address. -
Using an external hard drive from 2 locations
BeeCeeBee replied to paulespana's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If I am getting your issue correctly, all you want to do is to be able to work continuously on the same projects whether you are at home or at your office. If that is correct and you are a beginner lets just find a simple protocol you can follow. It is probably not necessary to use an external hard drive to do what you want to accomplish. Unless you are creating huge files on a daily basis a simple flash drive will probably suffice. The first thing to do is make certain that whatever programs you are using for work are installed on both computers. That way any data that you create at one location will be usable at the other. You do not need the programs on the flash drive or external. Next organize your work so that it is all in one main folder. (how you do this is up to you and your "filing system." ) Now copy that entire folder onto the external drive and copy it to the other computer. Now you have 2 identical main folders on each computer. Now you have 2 different ways to go. If you can keep track of what files you are either creating or changing simply copy them to the flash drive or external. Do not rename them. When you go to the other location simply copy the changed or new files to the other main folder you created. You will get a message that there is already a file by that name (unless it is new) and it will ask you if you want to overwrite it? Simply say "yes" or "yes to all" if there is more than one file. (Any new files created that day will simply copy without any notice.) If you have made no changes in other files in the folder overwriting will have no effect nor cause any files to be altered. If you cant remember what you worked on recopy the entire folder to the drive. (Now unless you deleted the main folder from the flash drive you once again want to say "yes" to any overwrites.) This could take some time so it is far better to keep track of what you worked on.) Eventually you will develop your own system for keeping track of new work performed so that you do not have to "carry around" your entire main folder just to keep the two in sync. Finally there used to be a Windows program called "My Briefcase" or something like that which I believe allows you to do what I described above and sync your computers. I am sure this kind of programs exist. I just am unaware of them. However if you do not want to learn a new program, what I described above will work for you. -
Taking home desktop to work
BeeCeeBee replied to BigRussuk's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
It seems to me that if all these computers are accessing your one laptop at the same time it simply will not be able to handle it. You are basically turning a laptop with minimal resources into a server. I am sure there will be some real hardware experts who will weigh in on this but, from my limited viewpoint, it just isn't going to work the way you want it to. -
I can't imagine how anyone whose username is as offensive as yours could take offense at anything.

Something is sending a E-Mail from me
BeeCeeBee replied to proton's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
The account was hacked but not necessarily through your computer. Change you gmail password immediately and, if I were you, I would remove all contacts from your list. Start using a mail client such as Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird or even Outlook. Keep your contacts in the client only and not on the web based mail. This is a very common occurrence. -

Toshiba satellite p300 dvd /cd issue
BeeCeeBee replied to matt75's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Once you check that there are no warnings that would lead you to the possibility that it is either a firmware r driver issue you will probably lead to a new drive. The one thing that does bother me a bit is that the entire drive seems to have failed. Normally one function or another works while others have failed. There appear to be more than one model of the p300 designated separately by Toshiba. When you have a look in the device manager, if there are warnings (or even if not) get the make and model number of the optical drive. (I have never used Vista but you should be able to find the device manager by right clicking on "Computer" or "My Computer" select manage from the drop down menu and then select device manager from the left column.) -
Toshiba satellite p300 dvd /cd issue
BeeCeeBee replied to matt75's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
The bad news is that the optical drives in many of these laptops are usually the first to go the good news is that they are not all that expensive or difficult to replace. Most of these drives can be removed without opening the machine. Unfortunately some will have that one screw that cannot be reached. Before you act make certain that there are no warnings in your device manager and that the drivers are up to date. Have you tried using a commercial DVD or CD as a test? -
I was under the impression that you were getting a desktop with no icons or taskbar. I would suggest that you try going into safemode and attempting the same process. (If as soon as you start the machine you begin tapping the F8 key you should get to an advanced boot options menu. You could try last known good configuration and see if that does it, but assuming it does not select safemode and then try what I suggested above.) If you cannot get into safemode either then it will require a deeper look.

Try this and see if it cures your problem. When your blank desktop is loaded go to your Task Manager (Press ctrl + Alt =Del ) look in the Processes tab and see if you can find "exporer.exe" in the list of processes. If it is there highlight it and end the process at the bottom. If it is not there and I suspect it may not don't worry about it. After you have either ended the process or not found it, go to "file" at the top of the Task manager and select New Task. When prompted type in the explorer.exe press ok and exit the task manager. Does that solve your problem?

New motherboard or just increase ram ?
BeeCeeBee replied to LJA's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Anything more than 3 Gigs of RAM on XP home is wasted. If your bios can handle the 4 gigs it will recognize it but windows will not (I have heard some instances where XP will "see" as much as 3.5.) I believe that if you are going to add Ram to the DDR2 slots you will need to remove the others. You are right that they cannot be used together but I also believe that windows will only recognize the lower spec RAM. But I am not a hardware expert.) Personally I would look to other causes for the slowdown before assuming that increased RAM will be the solution although RAM is not all that expensive so it may be worth a try. -
It sounds like the PSU may be faulty. A power light indicates that there is power going into the PSU but that does not mean that it is functioning properly. There really is no need to double post and your other one in the OS forum should be deleted.
