Remove editing restrictions
Plastic Nev replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I know this sounds too simple, and it may not work as I don't know what the restrictions consist of, but have you tried an entire copy and paste into another or new word document? this just might over rule the editing restrictions if they are only simple ones. Nev. -
Firefox-remember password issue
Plastic Nev replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi again Shrimply, Firefox can be a tricky beast to uninstall, the normal uninstall via add and remove will remove the main part of Firefox, but a lot gets left behind, when you reinstall you will find that all your bookmarks are still there as well as some of the original add ons as these don't get deleted. However for now do a normal removal and reinstall and see if that works OK. If not, we can go a bit deeper to get everything off before the reinstall. Nev. -

A great feeling isn't it to teach a younger person how to ride a bike, and finally see them go off into the distance on their own. It is worrying though as to when are they ever are coming back!!!! Nev.

A good one Doug that was appreciated by a golfer friend when I told him. Nev.

This was sent to me by a Scotsman friend in an E Mail. Considering there are a good few members here from America, I thought you all might be interested in where the term originated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Am betting that y'all have heard the term 'redneck' sure enough and the US being such a young country y'all thought that 'rednecks' originated in the deep South...... WRONG! The word redneck is first cited in Scotland, where it referred to supporters of the National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant, otherwise known as Covenanters - largely lowland Presbyterians. The Covenanters in the mid 1600's signed documents that stated Scotland desired the Presbyterian form of church government and would not accept the Church of England as its official state church. To signify their desire, many Covenanters signed the documents in their own blood, would spill their blood to keep this from happening and wore red pieces of cloth around their necks as distinctive insignia - hence the term Redneck . These Scottish Presbyterians migrated from their lowland Scottish home to Ulster (the northern province of Ireland) during the 17th Century and soon settled in considerable numbers in North America across the 18th Century. One etymological theory holds that since many Scotch-Irish who settled in what would become the South were Presbyterian, the term was bestowed upon them and their descendants. So its och aye the noo to y'all"

OK Nick, this is obviously a feature not on my machine, can you give us some details please, we need to know the make of your computer and the model number, the operating system, XP or Vista, and if possible what type the sound system is. With that I can then research for information. In the mean time, I wonder if this is a special function of your particular keyboard, have you tried an update of keyboard driver? Nev.

Firefox-remember password issue
Plastic Nev replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Have you installed any new add ons prior to this happening? I have had a good look round and cannot find a way to make Firefox behave like that! If I am not logged in to a site, the log in window opens with my user name and password already there, so all I have to do is click the log in tab. Are you using the private browsing feature? that is one area I haven't looked at yet. Nev. -
Firefox-remember password issue
Plastic Nev replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Shrimply, how are you apart from this problem? Click on tools, then options, in the options panel tick "Security" Is there a tick in the box for "Remember passwords for sites"? Also have a look in "exceptions", see if there is anything wrong there then look at "saved Passwords". Next is which version of Firefox are you running? Click help, then "About", you should, if up to date, be on 3.5.3. If not go to Firefox and update. Nev. -
Hi Nick, funnily enough, the buttons on my keyboard don't actually bring up the volume slider on screen, I have to click the speaker icon on the bottom task bar first, then the buttons work. Do you still have the speaker icon on the bottom task bar, if so, does a click on it bring up the volume slider, and will it work as it does for me? Nev.

Throughput has collapsed
Plastic Nev replied to Fatcockney's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, we seem to have ruled out malware now with thanks to Chiaz for that. So it must be something to do with the connection itself, apart from making sure all plugs and sockets are firmly connected, and even a replacement of any cables to rule out the more simple faults, I am out of ideas. I am no network expert, so I will leave it for one of our network guys to get back to you. Nev. -
Not sure that you know enough? Do you need that extra bit of helpful information? Look no further, here is a cheats way round-- http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/tech_support_cheat_sheet.png Enjoy, Nev.

Although not malware related directly as such, but still a part of general security is the need to be aware of the scammers who will try to defraud you by luring you into parting with your credit/debit card details. There is an excellent test from VeriSign, of your abilities to detect a scam website against the genuine one. It highlights the fact that these criminals are getting better at fooling you. Have a look here and see how well you can do, but also learn from the experience. https://www.phish-no-phish.com/PhishingTest.aspx

Hi again, you say you have uninstalled and reinstalled, so I assume you will also have tried a driver update? If not, try that. Nev. -
trackpad has its own mind
Plastic Nev replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Well Tismehi, you got a good one there, however I can at least sort out the last one I hope. The reason for the @ being on the shift2 key is down to languages and settings being set to American. However I doubt resetting back to UK will sort the rest, but at least give it a try. These instructions are for XP, but I doubt there will be much difference in Vista, except the run command may be slightly different, I don't have Vista yet so can't be sure. go to start, run, and type, or copy and paste-- intl.cpl click OK. or enter. Under the regional Options tab select English (United Kingdom) on the drop down menu. click apply, then OK. You may have to reboot for the change to work. If the other problems persist, I must ask, has any liquid been spilt on it? If not we will go further depending on what you report next. -
Tommy Cooper may not have told all these jokes, but most of them. For those who remember him. I met this bloke with a didgeridoo and he was playing Dancing Queen on it. I thought, 'That's Aboriginal.' ----------------------- This lorry full of tortoises collided with a van full of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster. ------------------------ I told my girlfriend I had a job in a bowling alley. She said 'Tenpin?' I said, 'No, permanent.' ----------------------- I went in to a pet shop. I said, 'Can I buy a goldfish?' The guy said, 'Do you want an aquarium?' I said, 'I don't care what star sign it is.' ---------------------------- I bought some Armageddon cheese today, and it said on the packet. 'Best before End' --------------------------- I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said 'Analogue.' I said 'No, just a watch.' ------------------------------ I went into a shop and I said, 'Can someone sell me a kettle.' The bloke said 'Kenwood' I said, 'Where is he then?' -------------------------- My mate is in love with two schoolbags. He's bi-satchel. ------------------------ I went to the doctor. I said to him 'I'm frightened of lapels.' He said, 'You've got cholera.' --------------------------- I met the bloke who invented crosswords today. I can't remember his name, its P something T something R. ---------------------------- I was reading this book today, The History of Glue. I couldn't put it down. ---------------------------- I phoned the local ramblers club today, but the bloke who answered just went on and on. --------------------------- The recruitment consultant asked me 'What do you think of voluntary work? I said 'I wouldn't do it if you paid me.' -------------------------- I was in the jungle and there was this monkey with a tin opener. I said, 'You don't need a tin opener to peel a banana.' He said, 'No, this is for the custard.' ---------------------- This policeman came up to me with a pencil and a piece of very thin paper. He said, 'I want you to trace someone for me..' -------------------------- I told my mum that I'd opened a theatre. She said, 'Are you having me on?' I said, 'Well I'll give you an audition, but I'm not promising you anything.' ---------------------------- I phoned the local builders today, I said to them 'Can I have a skip outside my house?' He said, 'I'm not stopping you!' -------------------------------- This cowboy walks in to a German car showroom and he says 'Audi!' -------------------------- I fancied a game of darts with my mate. He said, 'Nearest the bull goes first' He went 'Baah' and I went 'Moo' He said 'You're closest' ------------------------------ I was driving up the motorway and my boss phoned me and he told me I'd been promoted. I was so shocked I swerved the car. He phoned me again to say I'd been promoted even higher and I swerved again. He then made me managing director and I went right off into a tree. Computer courses Help.
Plastic Nev replied to Jelly Bean's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi for my contribution, which is basically taking it from where Danzil left off, once you have got to the point of turning it on, although it won't always apply, but there is the question of activation of Windows and registration with Microsoft if the machine is brand new straight out of the box, plus all the other bits and pieces of a first time start up. If the machine is either second hand or has been activated then move on to the start button once it has fully booted,( it is also a good idea to point out that it may take a small amount of time to fully boot, so best to let it get on with it first, and not try opening programs etc till it has booted up) I think at that point it is worth while opening the programs list from "Start" and going to Accessories and explaining all within, a good grounding on things like disk clean up, defrag, system restore etc is no bad idea. A lot depends of course on how much the person all ready knows of course, but simple basics such as those above, plus the copy and paste for copying from one document to another are well worth the time and effort. Thanks for that heads up Danzil, I may copy this to somewhere else to make sure the message is spread. There are many folk using facebook who could just fall for that one. -

Hi, I noticed earlier you said there are three other laptops connected with no problem. Now you have done a complete reinstall, I must ask was it a full reinstall and not a repair or similar? If a full reinstall that should have cleared any malware so I can only assume it is a connection issue, are all these connections hard wired or are they wireless? Is it possible to try your desktop on one of the laptops connections? Nev. -
Motherboard sound processor issue?
Plastic Nev replied to DiscoSass's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks for letting us know. Have you tried headphones? Also in my case I connected my sound out into my stereo system, much bigger and better speakers than most built for computers. Have you looked into doing something similar as something for the future? Nev. -
Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Have you had a word with your landlord about it, there may need to be a password used. If you can also get any information from your landlord as to what type of system it is, that would help us if it is just a connection issue. Nev.

Hi, I am a little worried that the high CPU usage may be down to malware activity, but I will wait for our security team to have a look, if they think the same then this may be moved to that section. Nev.

Do you have a loudspeaker icon on the right hand side of the bottom task bar? if you do, double click it, all the volume controls should open, under the main play control, is there a box labelled "Advanced"? If so that should open the bass and treble controls. Nev.

Does anybody know what this is? "Form1"
Plastic Nev replied to mr_banana_pants's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, the only help I can give is that I don't think it is Avast, I have been running Avast for a long time and not seen that, it may be your firewall, but others may know more. Nev.
