  1. I know very little on this subject, but have you tried the TV converter on your computer? I think it should work, so all you may need is another one.
  2. Hi again Brenda, it is a bit daunting is the repair sequence, and even then it may not be the answer. I hope you understand that for us working at a distance and not hands on, we cannot see it all. In this case as loath as we are to say so, it may be best to take it to someone you trust to have a look at it. From what you tell us, it could well be a fault on some part of the hardware instead of the operating system, but we have to start at the beginning, a tech guy can usually do all that in minutes. Do go to someone local and reputable, and if possible stay away from the bigger retail stores. A local guy can usually do the job in house and cheaper. Most big retailers send them off elsewhere and charge an arm and a leg. Best of luck and please let us know how you get on.
  3. So long as the label hasn't been removed, all the details we need should be underneath on the base of the machine, plus also there should be a Windows label there with the product code number on it too, we don't need the product code ourselves but you will.
  4. Hi, a quick look round found me this- Toshiba Satellite Pro U300 : Read reviews and compare prices at Ciao.co.uk Is this your machine? if so it should show up as a 120GB drive. Please do upload some pictures of what you see then we can take things further.
  5. Have a look here, there is a free download converter and much more as well. Video Converter - Convert AVI/MPEG/MP4/MPG/WMV/iPod/iPhone/PSP/Zune/FLV/SWF video
  6. Hi Julz, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. I am sorry but it sounds a lot like the mother board has gone, Did you at any time sense a smell of burning near it? I doubt it has gone because of the power supply, but it could be a contributing factor. The only real answer now is to take it to a repair man and ask for it to be tested in order to be sure. If possible use a local and reputable repairer rather than one of the big names. The smaller businesses tend to charge less.
  7. Life before computing. Life before the computer. * Memory was something you lost with age * An application was for employment * A program was a TV show * A cursor used profanity * A keyboard was a piano * A web was a spider's home * A CD was a bank account * A hard drive was a long trip on the road * A mouse pad was where a mouse lived * If you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy... you just hoped nobody found out
  8. Hi and welcome from me, hope we can help.
  9. Hi and welcome Spools, do help out where you can, it is always welcome.
  10. Really this should be in Malware removal perhaps:D
  11. Hi, perhaps now is the time to ask if Norton has settled down. If not, it may be that the cure for your other problems may have damaged some of the Norton files, and although trying to download, it may not be doing, or worse it hasn't recognised them and is slowly filling your hard drive with useless info. I suggest uninstalling Norton, have a serious think about whether you want an anti-virus most folk don't like, and should you try a different one. Or re-install Norton. To uninstall it, use their own tool, it works the best and you can get it from here- Download and run the Norton Removal Tool If you do re-install Norton your subscription should still be valid, have a look at their advice on the link above for the uninstaller. 12. Are you meaning the mouse and pressure or touch pad in the middle under the keyboard? If so, do you have or can you borrow a plug and play USB wired mouse, and see if Windows both picks it up, and installs drivers for it, this might also solve the touch pad problem. If not, get back to us and one of our other mods may be able to help further.
  13. Match, how very true. The important thing is to make sure the broken pin is not still stuck in the socket, if it is, it must be removed before trying to fit a new CPU. Best of luck.
  14. A couple more thoughts, first have you tried a system restore to before you removed the drivers in the first place? Something else I have remembered, you state you have XP and Vista, is this on two different machines or one of the OS is on a separate partition? and which OS is the problem with? the Vista or the XP. If the XP, have you updated it to SP3? There were some odd issues regarding sound drivers and SP3 when it first came out. It may be worth rolling back to SP2 then trying the install.
  15. Hi Dgalexan, As far as I am aware, each time you want to change from one OS to the other when doing it that way, you would have to go into the BIOS settings and change the boot order for the drives. You may be better off having a partition on drive one for the XP and using the second drive as a normal extra drive. After all you will have loads of space with those two installed.
  16. Psychiatrists vs. Bartenders Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night.. So I went to a shrink and told him . . . 'I've got problems. Every time I go to bed, I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.' 'Just put yourself in my hands for one year,' said the shrink. 'Come talk to me three times a week, and we should be able to get rid of those fears.' 'How much do you charge?' 'Eighty dollars per visit,' replied the doctor. 'I'll sleep on it,' I said. Six months later, the doctor met me on the street. 'Why didn't you ever come to see me about those fears you were having?' he asked. 'Well, eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $20 a week. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a vacation to Tuscany!' 'Is that so!' With a bit of an attitude, he added, 'And how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?' 'He told me to cut the legs off the bed! - Ain't nobody under there now! ! ! ' .....GO HAVE A DRINK & TALK TO YOUR BARTENDER!
  17. Hi, Do you have a separate sound card, plugged into a PCI slot? The system declaring it has found one can only happen if there is one normally. What type of internet connection do you have? We may have to reinstall that as it seems the drivers may have inadvertently been deleted in the process so far.
  18. Last night me and the missus is watching a program about being in a coma till the end comes, so I said to the wife, I don't want to be just like a vegetable at the end, hooked up to machines. Just pull the plug and stop the liquids. She pulled the plug out for the TV and threw away my beer, she can be a cow at times.
  19. It may be worthwhile either sending the disk back to MS, or at least getting in touch explaining the problem, they may send you a replacement. Those cracks will only get worse.
  20. Mrs Brown went to her doctors and was behaving a little sheepishly, The doctor asked what was wrong, after all she had been seeing him for fifteen years. She replied that it seemed a little strange though, so he replied "Well let me be the judge of that then, so what is the problem? well she said, "when I went to the bathroom yesterday morning, there was a plink plink plink sort of sound, and when I looked there were lots of one penny pieces . at lunch time, when I went again, this time it was two penny pieces, and later in the day it was fives. This morning ten pence coins, and the last time before coming here it was twenties. The doctor said "Not to worry, it is common enough, you are------ Just going through the change :D
  21. Hi Roger, that is right. Once you have done that with all driver "exe's" at least we will know they were or weren't the cause. However the results so far do seem to indicate a faulty driver that needs replacement. Good luck.
  22. Hi macaroon, Good advice so far, especially from poconos, do try an external display, but please give us some details of make and model and operating system on it etc. Also how many lights light up on the front, what each is for, and how they behave, for example, if there is one for the HDD, it should be flickering on and off, not full brightness continuously.
  23. Hi BJD and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. First off I would not have recommended the removal of the driver in the first place, the problem you describe comes from having a too sensitive microphone connected. However the damage has been done. Though now late in the evening I have had a quick look at the gigabyte site and found this- GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Download Center Is it this link or page you got the driver from? On that page you should find the link button to update or reinstall all drivers which should also cover the sound system. Otherwise there are quite few different types of the Realtech sound system so drivers have to be the right ones to work. I would try the Gigabyte site first as they should have the right ones for your board.
  24. Perhaps a little late but the BIOS battery that Tootech asked you to remove, is around twenty millimetres (3/4 inch) in diameter and looks like a large watch battery, it is located on your mother board. Have a look at this site for more help on it and how to remove it, as some fittings are tricky to undo. Replacing the Motherboard Battery | Hardware Secrets
  25. Hi, it could be nothing more than the connections to the hard drive, remove the plugs check there is no dirt or bent pins, then replace and make sure they are properly seated, also try to move any wiring back to its original positions, if a cable carrying the current to make the drive move, is too close to the audio chips, they may pick up the clicks and other disturbances from that cable.
