  1. Hi Rebecca and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. If you can start a new thread on your issue we may be able to help you out then. That way you won't be ignored. Thanks.
  2. Seagate 1TB Barracuda drives are failing at an alarming rate, with users complaining of a plague of such failures spreading across the globe. More here- Seagate customers swamped by Barracuda drive failures ? The Register
  3. It looks like a dollop of fried mashed spuds to me, though I could be wrong, prefer hash browns meself if your going for the spuds.
  4. Hi Alpha, Although not often it happens, but in this case it may be so, as both drives have failed together, it may just be the cable connecting them to the mother board. For the price of a new cable from the likes of Maplin or E buyer it is worth a try before throwing both drives.
  5. Not that many years ago food was food, and it included things like tripe, (cow stomach lining) pigs trotters (pigs feet) and many other delights, all offally good stuff. You eat them cos it was all you could afford, no half pound steaks, or lamb chops, they were to expensive.
  6. Hi Phantom, I know where you are, I am also a musician using stuff like Sibelius, Finale, and other programs, I also have masses of files, so to burn to disk as Wolfey suggested would be a bit of a marathon exercise. I suggest you could buy an external hard drive, and transfer everything musical to that. All programs and other stuff should go straight over and be available to transfer back once the reformat has been done. I would not recommend a full back up of the system using a program such as Acronis True Image, as that would likely take the virus with it. I am afraid it would have to be done folder and program at a time.
  7. well at least you are stumbling along in good company as we are more than happy to help you and every one else in learning more each day. That also includes me too.:D
  8. Hoping not to tread on any toes here as Beeceebee, and Dalo are correct in their way, I can also endorse the Revo uninstaller that Goku mentions, I have it and when sent off to do an uninstall, it does go chasing the remnants. If any thing is left behind after Revo has finished, you can safely ignore it. It saves the messing of doing searches for all the stuff the ordinary Windows uninstaller leaves behind.
  9. Hi Mara, to also answer one of your questions "does any one know of a good photo handling program" or words similar to that, big grin, I found a real beauty that is freeware called Photofiltre, it is easy to use and has many good features, though not too sure about direct to E Mail linking. However as it is free and with no risk, there is no harm in giving it a look at is there? you can download it from here- http://www.photofiltre.com When the page opens be sure to click the "English" link on the left, unless of course you are fluent in French, as it was created by a Frenchman. Hope you find it useful, as you can start with a blank page to add other images etc, which is I believe what you wanted. Nev.
  10. As Dalo said, if your RAM is less than 1GB, that could be a factor, if however you have more than that, even for Vista, it may be a server problem or distance from the exchange. I don't know what type of connection you have but if ADSL, you may have the facility to see the actual download speed as it happens. In my case a double click on the ADSL icon on the bottom task bar opens a speed indicator window. At busy parts of the day, actual download speeds can be as low as 50Kbps, when I am supposedly on 8Mbps. If that is the case, I would take it up with your ISP as it is known that a lot of ISPs are throttling speeds during busy periods.
  11. I have to second that, and for me a black pudding can also be boiled for about ten minutes, then the skin should just peel off, a bit of good English mustard and it is even more gorgeous.
  12. Snow put to a good use.
  13. Hi and welcome from me too. I reckon it should be OK to fill it with transformer oil myself. He he he he. Just kidding.:D
  14. Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help John. Can you turn your system on, and before doing anything to get the DVD working, have a look in device manager, click start, then run, and type or copy and paste " devmgmt.msc " (without the quotation marks)in the box. Scroll down to DVD/CD ROM if there, click the + then double click on each device shown, let us know what it says or if any yellow !! or red ??. I also think there may be a problem with your power supply which could be dropping its voltage on start up, hence the drives not being recognised. Can you tell us the rating of the PSU and whether you have an extra graphics card in.
  15. Hi David, From what you say in your first post, I suspect the PSU may well have been on the way out right at the beginning, hence the duff motherboard. I am not sure what you mean by Jingling with the old PSU to get it to work? However it may have spiked again and now damaged your new motherboard before you got chance to replace the PSU with a new one. It may cost a little to do so but is there a reliable tech in your area who can do a test on the board for you? I do feel the bad news is your board has gone. The fact that only the fans work is a classic symptom.
  16. I was getting off my bike today when some fellow came over and asked where I got such a good looking bike. I told him that I was outside the supermarket yesterday, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it on the ground, took all her clothes off and said to me "Take what you want". The fellow looked at me in a funny way, shrugged his shoulders, and said, "Good choice, the clothes probably wouldn't have fit anyway".
  17. Hi, you are using the laptop keyboard and not a separate USB one? If so, it may be something in there that shouldn't be! Have you tried our malware removal procedure just in case? Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup Steps Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/printer-selection.gif ____________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2) Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If required this is the download link for TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Unless instructed to by the Technician helping you then do not download this tool. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Please follow the instructions here How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows Vista
  18. Just one thing, check if it has one of those dual voltage sliders on that PSU and that it is set to 240 volts.
  19. hi Kitten, You say sound is OK with on line video, do you mean things like YouTube? That must mean your on board sound and video is perfectly OK, and suggests it may be a problem with WMP. Which version of WMP do you have? As an experiment, go to uninstall programs via control panel, and try uninstalling Windows Media player, this actually rolls it back to the previouse version if you had it, and have updated to the latest, which at the moment is 11. An uninstall will take it back to 10. If that cures the problem, try going back to the MS update site and re-install version 11.
  20. Hi Kitten and welcome from me too, I shall have a look at your problem now mate.
  21. Hi, Nathanialho, if you could start a new thread, and describe exactly what you want to do, I will be pleased to help if I can. I would sooner leave this one till monkeyprince replies, thanks.
  22. The last and final one would be to shut down, unplug it if still connected, reboot, once fully booted plug it back in, it should then either self install or Windows will ask to search for drivers, see if Windows can find them on the web.
  23. Hi Geordie, a warm welcome from me to. I served an apprenticeship as electrician, worked with all sorts since and now a chief engineer in a small factory making plastic parts. I think I know where you may be coming from, I may have travelled a similar road.
  24. Hi Penguin, Can you give us some details, make of your computer and model number, since you are in this section I assume the operating system is XP yes? Do you hear any POST beeps as the system starts up, and if so what order are they in, if more than one?
