  1. Hi Ray There are numerous posts over the web re: your problem. I found this posted by malke (MS-MVP): "This error is caused by the "Speech and Handwriting Recognition" feature of MS Office. You can turn this feature off by going to the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. Click on the entry for MS Office and then on "Change". Browse to "Office Shared Features," "Alternative User Input," and make Speech and Handwriting Recognition (both) "Not available" from the drop-down box."
  2. What are you doing about an OS ?
  3. We are posting too fast - and getting cross-posts :) That is obviously much better - it really depends on what games you wish to play. Synapse is best to advise on Video Cards. Hang on until he comes on line.
  4. MS are quite clear about the installation - one disk - one machine. If you mean - can I take the hard drive out of the Compaq machine and put it in the new one" ............probably not. The reason is that the motherboard is different and the installed OS will recognise a different m/board and probably refuse to boot up. MS have it all wrapped up I am afraid :)
  5. Please read the previous post too :) I have just registered what you said here.... If this isn't a 64 bit version then 8GB RAM is no use to you. The system will run slower on 32 bit. Also - if this is installed on another system it is illegal to put it on a second. ===================== EDIT: I have asked synapse ( moderator ) to take a look here too. Please wait until he adds his thoughts.
  6. Hi The i5 is a much better CPU. However ............ if you intend playing games on this machine that Video Card is not up to it I am afraid. You are going to have to be prepared to spend nearer to £100 [ or more ] on a decent card. ( the cost is going up !! )
  7. Hi, This has been discussed before ( somewhere here :) ) but it won't do any harm to open up the discussion again. I don't have the "Consumer Preview" of Win 8. This is a Beta version of the new OS. You are advised that it could be "buggy" and may not run some of your hardware. It also needs noting that if you do install it there is no way back to your previous OS. Apparently the installation wipes even the recovery partition ( if you have one ) and the original OS. So it is not a good idea to install this on your main system. The reason MS release this is so that you can problem solve the software for them. The release date for Win 8 is around October 26th
  8. Looks fine. You will notice the difference with 8GB RAM and the extra cost for a decent PSU is worth it. Good Luck with the build. This will not be suitable for running games but will be a fairly quick general purpose pc. You do have a heat sink in mind for the cpu ? EDIT: it comes with its own fan with a thermal plate already waiting to go on the chip. Quote from one of the reviews - so it looks as if this is covered.
  9. Hi I have looked around the forums and get conflicting results: The MS official response is that Office XP Pro is not compatible with Win 7 see here I have also read that some people have installed it no problem ............??? Take a look here and try Compatibility Mode click here There is another alternative - Open Office (free) click here You can, of course, have both on your system at the same time
  10. The specs for the case state ....Compatible with ATX and Micro ATX Motherboards So yes - the m/board will fit the case and the Video Card will fit the m/board. Your PSU is a "no-name" - you would be best advised to spend a little more and get a reliable manufacturer. Also PSUs are inefficient and it may say 400Watt but you may be lucky to get 380 - 370 Watts ...........especially when it starts to age. Take a look here click here OCZ is a good make and 500Watts will be more than enough - it will even give you the option of up-grading your Video Card. The OS you are buying is 64 bit - so you would be better with 8GB Ram. (2 x 4GB) If you are only going for 4GB ( this is a minimum in my opinion ) then get 2 x 2GB If one goes down you will still be able to use the other. I assume that this is just a home / office system and is not going to be used for games ?
  11. Hi, The specs for your m/board are here: click here The m/b has one PCIe x 16 slot so your ATI card will fit. The m/board can support up to 8GB RAM If you have a 32 bit OS then you are limited to 4GB as 32 bit Windows will only recognise 4 GB and utilise about 3.5 GB. Depending upon what wattage PSU you have - you may have to upgrade this. The suggested wattage for this card is 400Watt - minimum click here
  12. As my PC Experience says ......"Learning all the time" :)
  13. Try disconnecting the HDD - switch on. Let the system find the CDROM Then [without switching off] - carefully - reconnect the HDD
  14. Hi Simon You could try Cable Select. This is assuming 80 way IDE cable. Set both HDD and DVD Drive jumper to CS. Position the HDD in the middle of the IDE cable and the DVD Drive at the end. The DVD Drive should be looked at first. Give this a try. If no go - it is a simple job to revert to the original settings.
  15. Good to see you again - hope all is well ? :)
  16. Hi, The OEM ( Original Equipment Manufacturer ) should be one installation on one machine. [this is why you were not asked for the Product Code] The installation is tied to the original Motherboard - so if the motherboard dies then it should be a new m/b and a new OS. ( as I see it :) ) I am surprised that the 4 machines have been verified - unless the installation CD has a volume license.
  17. Hi, I have never known an installation not to ask for the Product Key. This is a legal copy of XP that you have ? You can change the Product Key click here This assumes that the COA sticker shows the same OS as the install CD. When you change the key it will need to be verified.
  18. I have posted the log as this is how our security experts like to see it. I will ask one of them to take a look and advise further. ==================== Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Trial) 1.62.0.1300 http://www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2012.07.15.07 Windows XP Service Pack 3 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 Dave :: PRIVATE-4E09097 [administrator] Protection: Enabled 2012/07/15 03:59:40 PM mbam-log-2012-07-15 (15-59-40).txt Scan type: Quick scan Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM Scan options disabled: P2P Objects scanned: 219040 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 56 second(s) Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 6 HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{d08d9f98-1c78-4704-87e6-368b0023d831} (PUP.Adware.RelevantKnowledge) -> No action taken. 19. Have you tried removing the RAM and replacing them ? Also - it could be one module at fault so you could try them one at a time ( assuming there are 2 ) =============== In answer to your question: This is totally dependent on which motherboard is on the old and the new laptop. If they are exactly the same then this may be possible. It is also possible to take the hard drive out of the machine and put it in an enclosure. This connects up to the USB port and effectively you convert it to an external hard drive.
  20. You probably need to take it off completely - clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol ( from a pharmacy ) and replace the thermal paste ( Arctic Silver or similar ) The thermal paste only needs to be a very thin layer. ============= It is cookie related. You now have a cookie ( small piece of software ) on your system from this site. It may have been related to your privacy settings - either way ...............hopefully it is all ok now.
  21. The RAM modules - as Synapse suggests - are usually located underneath a panel in the base of the machine. http://laptoprepairscornwall.co.uk/images/laptop-memory-upgrade.jpg They flip up and are easily taken out and replaced.
  22. Hi, I can't see that the stair incident 3 months ago would be related to your present problem. The problem with laptops is - they are so difficult to work on !! Try taking the battery out and use just the power adapter. If that fails swap over and try just the battery. Do you get anything on screen at all ?
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS Silly question - when you alter the boot sequence ..............do you Save and Exit from the BIOS ( usually F10 )
  24. Hi Absolutely nothing - I have just heard from synapse (moderator)and he has the same problem as you. I always use the "Remember me" box - which will put a cookie ( harmless ) on your system.
  25. Thanks for the feedback - good to hear that the mouse is now behaving itself :)
