  1. Do you get something like this ? http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Thomson/ACG905/Login.jpg
  2. Will do. Lets us know if the replacement works better than the original :)
  3. The coloured slots are there so that you can identify the position for the RAM. If you are using just 2 modules they must be put in the correct slots - in your case the green ones. You have the provision for 2 matched pairs. If your machine is shutting down after 5 mins it could be heat related. If you can download Speccy from here. ( the free version ) http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download If you can run it and post the temperatures this will give us the relevant information.
  4. That is good to hear. We don't delete threads - especially "Solved" ones - as you say ......it will be useful to others. Thanks for including the fix.
  5. If you are getting the same condition with the card and on-board video we can rule that out. Try taking the RAM out and switch on. It will not boot up - but it should be stable. If it is - put just one module back in and try again. Swap the RAM modules over to test each module. b-t-w ...........does the machine get to the point where it is actually booted up ?
  6. Hi and welcome to ExTS This sounds like a Power Supply Unit problem - but let's check out one or two other possibilities before we swap PSUs over. 1. Do you get any POST beeps after switching on ? If not it could be PSU or Motherboard ( assuming you got a single beep before .............try wife's system ) 2. If you do get beep(s) then try taking the RAM out and switch on. You will not be able to boot up - but the machine should give you a BEEP code and be stable. 3. Do you get anything on screen before / after taking the RAM out ? 4. Are you happy to try swapping PSUs ? ( it is a simple job :))
  7. It is not necessary - but if you have a lot of photos say ......it is just tidier. It is used more when installing an Operating System. The OS is put on one partition and the other could be used for backups. If the OS subsequently goes corrupt then it is a simple job to re-install without touching the backups.
  8. Does the m/board have on-board video? If so - take the card out and try the on-board connection.
  9. Hi The defaults are normally ............ The username is usually Admin The password is generally Admin or Password
  10. Hi Brian and welcome to ExTS If this is the case - have you looked in Add/Remove to see if it is there ? If so - delete it and see if this fixes your problem.
  11. Hi and welcome to ExTS Open up the side panel and check the system for dust. If there is any - use a can of compressed air in short bursts. Pay particular attention to the fans and the video card. ( It may be best to do this outside :) ) You could also take the Video Card out > clean the contacts with a pencil eraser > reseat it.
  12. Also - before you create an image of the drive - do you wish to create more than 1 partition on the hard drive ?
  13. As maynardvdm suggests - can you format and re-install ?
  14. That clears up the confusion I was having. Do you have SP3 ? Start > Run .... type in ....winver ....ENTER Also download TweakUI from here ( select the version according to your service pack ) http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm Install it and under "Drives" make sure there is a check in all of the boxes. If you have to add any > OK to save. =================== Do other devices connected to USB ports operate normally ? ( Not on XP at the moment so "Drives" may not be quite correct ...........it will be on the left side of screen ) =================== I will move this to XP Forum when you reply.
  15. I have already answered this here http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/13894-lt-windows-root-gt-system32-hal.dll. What is the point of posting it twice ??
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS So - you got part-way through an installation and the laptop shut down. Do you have the disk in the drive when you switch on again ? Is the CDROM set as the first boot device in the BIOS ? It must be otherwise you could get this error with a partially installed OS.
  17. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have split your post from the other one - you are better with your own thread :) I note that the other poster received no replies. I assume that you are using Android as the OS ? I don't know if any of the guys here have experience of this - I know I don't. In the mean time - could you give us a few more specifics re. the problem please ? This confuses me. Are you having internet connection problems ( like the first poster ) ? How is the PC involved ? You will have to excuse me if I am being particularly stupid :) I found this that may help: ( basic wi-fi setup .....select from down arrow ) click here When you reply I will move this to the "Networking" forum.
  18. I think the board needs replacing. Before you do so I would ring a local pc tech and ask if he has the facility to test it and how much it will cost. If your m/board does need replacing then there is every liklihood that the Operating System will need to be re-installed. If the board is exactly the same then you stand a very good chance of being OK. XP can undergo a Repair Install which will associate the OS with the new m/board and retain files etc. If you go down this route I would advise getting the files and photos etc off the drive before you start. This can be done with a HDD to USB adapter or external enclosure.
  19. Can you try the video card in another system - ( friends ) ? There is no real test for a video card but to swap it.
  20. Hi and welcome to ExTS Does this system have a video card and on-board video ? If so - can you take the video card out and try it on the on-board ?
  21. Hi Ray Yes it will - sorry about that .......I hoped it may spit it up into its component parts. Is there a possibility of borrowing an Office 2003 disk ?
  22. It looks like a motherboard problem.
  23. You should be able to access the router. What happens if you paste http://dsldevice.lan into the address bar ?
  24. Hi Shane I am afraid I have had to edit your post. We are not ebay - we are here to help with computer based problems. I will say that I would expect to pay about half of the original cost for a used unit - your £700 is far too expensive.
