1. Hi jollyroger isolatedvirus has given you some good information here. The last 2 links involve editing the Registry. The text suggests that you backup the Registry before you attempt this. You should make sure that you do this. This can be done from within Windows - but a better option that our security guys always recommend is a free piece of software called Erunt. It is easier to explain with a link. see here Thanks for you input so far isolatedvirus :)
2. I am unsure why Crucial Scan should report 8GB ??? ( unless you have had a motherboard replacement in the past ) The link to the Dell site states quite clearly 4GB max. The Dell site suggests 4 x 1GB but you would be able to use 2 x 2GB in slots 1 & 3 see here I found this on Amazon click here You may be able to use this for price comparison. Personally I would not recommend buying cheap RAM. Crucial - Corsair - Kingston - G.Skill all make good products If your OS is 32bit there would be no benefit to putting more than 4GB RAM in anyway.
3. Hi max_power and welcome to ExTS Yes - please start a new thread :)
4. Hi, Just to confirm - ( If you decide to upgrade the RAM ) Your motherboard only supports up to 4GB RAM. The suggestion is 2 matched pairs. ( You have 4 slots - probably 2 different colours. ) The first pair will be in slot 1 & 3 and the second pair 2 & 4 You would need 4 x 1GB DDR2 RAM 533Mhz 32bit systems will only utilise about 3.5GB RAM anyway. If you are unsure try Crucial Scan http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/drammemory.aspx?gclid=CMywhJq9ya8CFQ1lfAodo08OZQ&cpe=pd_google_uk&ef_id=edNPAtrvwkcAAEX@:20120422221303:s How much RAM do you have at the moment?
5. Why do you want to upgrade your Processor ? You are right - your system will support 4GB see here
6. That should be the very last resort !!!!! Stick with us - I am sure, together, we will be able to sort your installation problem :)
7. Hi Jim Instead of the CD try using this driver: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en&DriverId=R236794 Uninstall the old one first.
8. You will also need a 6 pin power connection from the PSU to the card. Not checked the specs of your PSU but if it hasn't got one then it is possible to create one from a spare molex connection.
9. You could give CCleaner a try - do not use the Registry option ............leave it on the default settings.
10. I wouldn't have advised you to uncheck them if this was going to be the case. Most of what is in msconfig > startup is not needed to run automatically. It is always possible to go back and check them again - they don't vanish. I suggest that you make a note of the ones that are checked - then uncheck them .............except for AV and firewall entries.
11. Hi Jim Have you tried uninstalling the re-installing the drivers ?
12. If this is the case then the card should fit. :)
13. Start > type in .......msconfig ..............ENTER Click on Startup Uncheck everything that is not either your AntiVirus or Firewall. (you can enable them again later if necessary) You will probably be prompted to restart. Try the connection again.
14. If you want the free version use Nev's link and click on Products. The free version is there. You may need to uninstall the version that you have downloaded. The log looks clear . ================= Try deleting temp internet files Start > Control Panel Click Classic View > Internet Options > Delete select Temp Files If this doesn't help delete cookies ( same process ) If you do this then saved passwords and auto login to sites like this will need to be done manually for the first login after deleting cookies.
15. Thanks Randy ............I was assuming that there was a full installation disk. I assume that you DO have a CD which is a full installation version of XP ? I don't think a recovery disk would give you the option of creating a new partition. If you have a disk - what does it say on it ?
16. refer to post #40 again. Event viewer may give us some ideas - it may not. You need to make a note of the exact time ( and date ) so that you can look specifically for that.
17. Hi and welcome to ExTS It sounds as if you have created another partition and installed XP onto that. If I were you I would format the drive and start over. Before you do this you will need to copy anything that is needed by way of files - photos etc onto an external drive or DVD. Take a look here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html You need to look at number 13 onwards. You will need to check that the CDROM is the first boot device in the BIOS. If you need help with this just shout :) ================ XP does not have too many drivers - you will need to locate drivers for video cards - network interface cards etc. We can help with this. ================
18. As J-B says - we cannot provide any assistance with passwords. You say your dad got the machine for your younger sister. It looks as if she has every right to set up a password entry - as it it her machine. Suggest that you have a word with your dad - he may be able to talk a bit of sense into her. We cannot assist further - sorry.
19. Hi, You should have a sticker on the side of the case that looks a bit like this: It will say here if it is Home / Professional / Media ....... If you have not had it in for repair and you have not put a different operating system on it then this will be correct.
20. That looks like software to me. The other half of the split screen keeps moving. Does it lock up in the same place if you play this section over again ?
21. If you are just using the netbook for notes and essays then you do not need an expensive one.
22. I think Nev may be correct with this one. Mine is the blue Fn key + F7 Yours may be a different F key.
23. Yes - this is the place where the two metal surfaces come together.
24. As you say Jim - printers are a throw-away item these days. Not worth the time and effort :)
25. It would be interesting to hear what they had to say.
