This doesn't sound like something that you will be able to fix yourself.
If the laptop was new in October 2011 then surely it is still covered by the warranty ?
I suggest that you check the guarantee period ( usually 1 year ) and then contact the supplier for a repair.
This should be free.
If you have to return the machine then I suggest that you remove any sensitive data from the hard drive.
The machine could be replaced ( unlikely but .....) You don't want your sensitive data available to workshop techs anyway :)

Just a thought ....
If you have a monitor that you can connect to the laptop - do this and if the lines show on the monitor too then it is possibly a video problem
( on the main board of the laptop )
If the picture is normal then the problem lies between the mainboard and the screen itself.
It could be a connection problem.
I don't suppose the machine was dropped was it ?
