1. Hi and welcome. If M-in-L wishes to sign up here we will be happy to help with any problems she has :)
2. Hi, I wrote a tutorial on this subject ( my own forum ) which may serve as a starting point. See here: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=372 The tutorial is in two parts. Second part here: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=389 After you have had a look at these you are welcome to ask any other questions that you may have :)
3. PUP.BundleInstall I will ask one of our malware experts to advise further.
4. Hi and welcome to ExTS I know you have checked - but is there an option in the BIOS to enable "Legacy Support" and is it enabled ? If there is a "Time out" for USB devices make sure this is set to max. Is there an option in the boot sequence to boot from "USB Device" or "USB HDD"? If not then I doubt that you will be able to do what you want. If there is then make this the first boot device.
5. I found the instructions below: 2. Start 3. All Programs 4. Control Panel 5. Accessibility Options 6. Display 7. Check the Use High Contrast box 8. Apply 9. Uncheck the Use High Contrast box 10. OK 11. Close Control Panel I tried to follow this with Vista and it is not the same. Does this work with XP ?
6. Hi Ray What is the resolution set to ? Right click on the desktop > Properties > Settings Try moving the slider to the right.
7. They probably are - but you have a BETA version and they may be missing. Take a look here: http://driverscollection.com/?H=Radeon HD 3000&By=ATI&SS=Windows 8 Don't click the big "Download" button - this is not the drivers.
8. I have my wires crossed here ...........I assumed it was a desktop ( hence the pic of the sound card above ) .............sorry. Try the LAN driver for your ethernet connection. I must state again - these drivers are for Win 2K and above so you are taking a chance with Win 98 Re external sound card: These are generally Plug-and-Play which means that they don't come with a driver CD I have seen them for a few pounds so if you cannot get the on-board sound working it may be an option - worth a try.
9. Hi Ray does this help? http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95319
10. I can see the logic :)
11. I read somewhere that it is compatible with Win 98. It is worth a try.
12. Sorry - none that I know of. I did write this earlier. Is the Video on-board or a card? It is a simple matter of buying a cheap Win8 compatible card if you wish to continue with this OS. This may help - but it checks installed hardware. click here
13. I have answered this at CHF - no point duplicating my post.
14. Thanks - I understand now. Your Video Card does heat up and the more data it has to move around the hotter it gets. The fan should kick in at the temperature rises. If the card overheats this can cause the problem you are having. Sometimes it can cause the system to shut down. Don't know if I have asked this before ( apologies if I have ) ..... Some video cards have a power connection on-board for 1 or 2 6 pin power connections. Does yours ? And is it connected? Are you using this? What doesn't fit your m/b ? ( CPU or Fan ? ) If you ARE using this does it have a cooling fan attached ? If it came with one it should do. If there is no fan the CPU will heat up as it is processing data and again, this can cause the problem you are having. It usually causes a shut down.
15. This is useful to know. Well done on fixing the problem :)
16. Run it for a while and try it playing a game to put it under some load. Obviously with the fan running at speed the air is circulated better aiding cooling. The fan should kick in automatically. Are you saying that you do not have a cooling fan on the Central Processor ? Some older ones used an aluminium heat sink. Which do you have ?
17. Hi, PCI is a slot on the motherboard. The PCI Multimedia Audio Device sounds like a sound card that is plugged into the motherboard. Looks a bit like this: If you have one we need the make and model number. The PCI Ethernet Controller could be the "Network Utility" that is an option from the link I gave you.
18. If you have removed all of the hardware and connections ( re Tutorial ) and you know the PSU is good - the only possible thing it can be is the motherboard. You could try removing everything ( except the 20 way power connection ) unscrew the m/board and sit it on a piece of card or newspaper to insulate it from the case. Switch on. If it doesn't shut down then there was a short between the m/board and the case. Internal Speaker ( 2 types )
19. Hi Simon GTX 295 if this doesn't cope nothing will !! Try taking the side panel off and directing a desk fan ( if you have one ) into the case. Run with the side panel off. If it is OK like this then there is an overheating issue.
20. Sounds like over-kill but I am happy to hear that your machine is up-and-running again :)
21. Hi, welcome to ExTS. If the OTL file is too big to fit on one post spread it over 2 or 3 posts. One of our Security experts should be along soon to advise you further. ( you need to ask your friend to register here and get their system checked over too :) )
22. Right - no beeps indicates that there is possibly a problem with the motherboard or Power Supply Unit. ( this assumes that you were getting a single beep before ?? ) I have a tutorial that explains whet to do next - assuming that you have an internal speaker connected. http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172 If you don't have an internal speaker still follow the tutorial - but you need to check that the system is stable and not shutting down. If it is stable with all of the hardware and connections removed then putting them back one at a time and testing after each is the way to go. The system should run the fans etc without restarting. Adding the hardware etc one at a time ( testing after each addition ) will [ hopefully ] indicate the problem when the system crashes again.
23. Thanks for getting back to me - pleased that your problem is solved. It seems that we have both been victims of rogue routers :)
