  1. Hi John Let us know how you get on :) EDIT: If the machine was used for email then you may wish to delete saved emails. I can explain if necessary.
  2. Hi and welcome to ExTS We always are .................most of the time :) If it is uneven then this is the likely cause of your problem. As you have removed the heatsink - and presumably replaced it ? - this will have disturbed the thermal paste and you will not be getting the contact you need for the heatsink to do its job efficiently. You need to take it off again and clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol ( get this from a pharmacy ) Then apply a very small amount of thermal paste and spread it evenly ( you can use an old credit card to do this ) You don't want too much paste as this is just as bad as not enough. See here:
  3. I taught electronics for more years than I care to remember - retired now :) The PCI card is independent of the 5v supply that the USB ports use so you should not have the same issues.
  4. Was this after you tried "Last Known Good Configuration" ? I assume that you get a blue screen if you try to boot normally ? If you use F8 ( about once per second ) after switching on - can you boot up in Safe Mode ? After you have answered these questions I will leave you in Starbuck's capable hands as this could be a malware problem.
  5. I have asked Starbuck to take a look at this thread. I will pick this up again tomorrow ( it is late here in the UK ) :)
  6. OK - try using F8 to get to the Advanced Startup Options ..........then select "Last Known Good Configuration"
  7. Start ......type in ......System Restore ..........ENTER Select a date just before the start of your problem. Your data / photos etc will be fine.
  8. Hi and welcome to ExTS Can you confirm that you can boot up OK in Safe Mode please? If you can .... Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ............ENTER Click the + next to each of the devices listed. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
  9. I agree with your calculation - 25 Ohms to draw 200mA on a 5v supply :) A 50 Ohm potentiometer may give you a bit of flexibility. It would need to be capable of 2 - 3 Watts if you are testing the port to full capacity. Fortran, if my memory serves me correctly, was predominantly a scientific language was it not ?
  10. Hi and welcome to ExTS When you say it gets to the Welcome page - is this the Win7 Welcome screen or is it still on XP ? Have you checked that the DVD CDROM is the first boot device in the BIOS ?
  11. Hi John From what I can find - that machine came with recovery disks and a drivers disk. If this is the case it is unlikely to have a recovery partition too. If you don't have the recovery disks you could buy them here: http://www.gennersales.co.uk/recovery/fujitsuamilovista.htm This link shows Vista - but if you contacted them I am sure they could give you a price for XP. If you don't want to go down this route: You could make sure that the machine is "clean" by doing the following: 1. Start > Search > All Files and Folders type in ------ .jpg ------( i.e. full stop followed by jpg ) This will find all photographs that are stored on the machine. 2. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Delete .......History / Cookies / Temp Files / Downloaded History 3. Start > My Computer > C: > Documents & Settings Look here for saved documents. 4. Use the search option for .doc ( fullstop doc ) This will find Word Documents saved I am not on XP at the moment so if any of the above proves to be a problem get back to me :)
  12. Hi Barry Sorry about the FixIt - forgot you were using XP. You only seemed to have problems when you had 2 devices connected. When you adapt your cable do you get a drop in current if you have another device connected ? =========== Another option is to use a PCI USB card - they only cost a few ££ (assuming desktop)
  13. This does not necessarily indicate that the USB ports are OK - it is just an indication of the required power for the Memory Sticks. The Total Power available has not been measured. Without putting an ammeter on the ports it is difficult to say if the output is actually enough to power more than one device. Theoretically there should be 500mA available on each - but if there is a motherboard or PSU problem causing the ports to behave as they are this is difficult to diagnose. Try this "Fix" http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices This will only fix the problem if it is software related.
  14. You can run SFC /scannow again. It will often find things on the second scan that were missed on the first. If it produces a log it will only show the results of the present scan. The log could be in the Recycle Bin. Take a look there.
  15. No problem :) Glad to hear that you managed to sort it - it is easily done.
  16. It could still be a power issue. Plug in the memory sticks. Start > Run ....type in .....devmgmt.msc ........ENTER Click the + to expand the USB Controllers Right Click on USB Root Hub in turn > Properties > Power It will say here what power is required The USB port can only supply 500mA This does not mean to say that the port is supplying the correct current.
  17. Did the system used to beep ? Have you got the old card? If so - put this back ( if it is working ) and see if you get the same problem.
  18. No - I don't think so. Try searching for ........sfcdetails This is the name of the Notepad file. Alternatively open Notepad > File > Open Type sfcdetails into the "file name" box
  19. Hi and welcome to ExTS I suspect that this may be a power issue. Can you transfer data between 2 Memory Sticks? How is your external drive powered? Do you use the USB port for this or a mains adapter ?
  20. Hi and welcome to ExTS I think you may be right. It may not be possible to upgrade this machine to Win7 as some of the hardware may not be compatible. (There is a piece of software that is available to advise you if you want to try this route) You need to check the System Files - Windows can do this itself using SFC ( System File Checker ) Start > Run ....type in .....cmd ............ENTER At the prompt type in .......sfc /scannow ...........( there is a space after sfc ) See here for more information: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=462 You may need the XP installation CD if you have it.
  21. Hi and welcome to ExTS :)
  22. Hi and welcome to ExTS :)
  23. Hi Ray As you say - the problem seems to have been corrupt drivers ( it happens ) Installing the most recent from the manufacturers site is the way to go if you have any more trouble. Keep us informed - hopefully you should have no more trouble :)
  24. Hi Stevie Let's try a few things before re-installing the OS - this is always a last resort. You are using XP - do you have a full XP installation disk just in case we need it ? Download MBAM from here: (You may get re-directed to a mirror site - this is OK ) Click on "Products" - you want the free version. http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro Install and run it. It will produce a log on completion. Copy this and post it with your next reply.
  25. Hi John and welcome to ExTS Does the machine have a Recovery Disk that came with it? It is a CD. What is the make and model number of the laptop? Some come with a recovery partition on the hard drive that is accessed using one of the "F" keys.
