[Solved] wireless button not working
KenB replied to tunna's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
No problem :) If you post again just start another thread. -
Hi and welcome to ExTS These CMOS batteries are not re-chargeable. If the date and time are wrong this is a good indication that the CMOS battery needs replacing. This refers to the floppy drive. Do you have one ? Switch on and tap F2 about once per second. This should take you into the BIOS. Look for Boot Order / Boot Sequence or similar ( all BIOS are different ) and see if Floppy is the first in the boot order. If it is change the order to 1 - CDROM 2 HDD Put the floppy 3rd if you have one - if you don't have one then move it even further down the boot order. You will get information - usually on the right side of the screen - on how to move the devices up and down. It is usually done with the + - keys. Don't forget to Save and Exit ( usually F10 - it will say on screen )

Hi again :) This could be an overheating problem that could be caused by dust. Take the side panel off the case ( assuming a desktop ? ) and take a look inside. There will probably be a lot of dust. Check the fans and the aluminium heat sink on the CPU. If there is dust I suggest you get a can of compressed air ( from any computer shop and some motor-factors ) take the machine outside as there will be some mess. Use short blasts to remove the dust. You can use a soft brush but this is not as effective.

[Solved] Startup Error Windows XP
KenB replied to eusetep's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Spigot is, as far as I can find out, a Tool Bar. wth.dll 5.9.0.3 this is directly linked with Spigot too. This .dll was referred to in your error report in your first post. It can't do any harm to delete the Spigot \search settings folder along with wth.dll 5.9.0.3 Check here too: Start > type in .....msconfig .....ENTER Click the Startup Tab. If anything related to Spigot is listed there - make sure it is un-checked and click the Apply / OK button. -
Hi and welcome to ExTS Start > click on Computer > right click on C:\ > click on Properties What size drive to you have - in GB ? How much free space - in GB ?

PC Freezes when playing graphically intensive games~HELP!
KenB replied to xSimmyn's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS We are not gamers here - so advice may be limited. Take a look here and run the software to see if your machine can run Battlefield III and the other games you are having problems with. click here I think the other thread came to the conclusion that the temperatures were OK - and I have to agree .....they are not hot. How much RAM do you have ? -
Hi cambdi and welcome to ExTS We are not like some forums - we are here to help :) Don't worry at all about making mistakes - they are easily corrected. Just post as much information about your problem as possible and we will take it from there.

[Solved] wireless button not working
KenB replied to tunna's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Congratulations :) Unlikely. It was probably the outer cable that caused the problem from wear and this caused 2 wires to short. If it is working then I can see no reason why it shouldn't continue to do so :) -
VERY STRANGE Graphics Issue - HELP!
KenB replied to mozza820's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
The lines are almost certainly down to the Graphics chip. This could be faulty. The chip does utilise RAM and it could be linked with that. How much RAM is installed? Start > Right click on Computer > Properties Win 8 needs a minimum of 1GB. -
Hi Thanks for the MBAM log. One of our security experts will need to advise further. They will, however, need a couple more logs from OTL. If the logs are too long then split them over 2 or 3 posts. Please follow these instructions carefully :) Download OTL to your desktop. right click on the link and select 'Save Link/Target As'. if you have problems, try this download link: OTL Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted. When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output. Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new/Otllatest.png . Now copy the lines in bold below. netsvcs msconfig %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.* %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll %systemroot%\*. /mp /s %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav %PROGRAMFILES%\* %USERPROFILE%\..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs CREATERESTOREPOINT right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new%20forum/scan-fix.png . Click the Run Scan button. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/runscan.png Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long. When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply. Note: Running the above script with OTL will : turn on your system restore and set a new restore point (XP only) set a new restore point (if system restore is turned on) Vista & Win7. In your next reply, please submit: - Both reports from OTL Whilst we are helping you, please don't run other programs/scans without our knowledge .... it only confuses things. Thanks.

VERY STRANGE Graphics Issue - HELP!
KenB replied to mozza820's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Paul and welcome to ExTS I realised that :) If you had not have said that you had this problem prior to Win 8 I would have suspected that as it is only a Beta version. Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc .........ENTER Click the + next to "Display Adapters" Are there any yellow exclamation marks / red Xs ? If not - try right click on device and un-install. Re-boot your machine. Windows will locate "New" hardware and re-install the drivers for your Graphics. You may be interested in this from Microsoft: What are the risks of installing Windows 8? Windows 8 Release Preview is stable and has been thoroughly tested, but it’s not the finished product. Your PC could crash and you could lose important files. You should back up your data and you shouldn't test Windows 8 Release Preview on your primary home or business PC. You might also encounter problems like: Software that doesn’t install or work correctly, including antivirus or security programs. Printers, video cards, or other hardware that doesn’t work. Difficulty accessing corporate or home networks. Files that might become corrupted. You should carefully balance the risks and rewards of trying out the Windows 8 Release Preview before you install it. -
Hi Rob MBAM produces a log after the scan and saves it. Open MBAM > Open Logs Double click on the log that produced the 41 problems ...........it will open in Notepad. Copy the log and post it here please.

Need help to setting up a small network
KenB replied to Bala's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS I have no experience of setting up a business network - just home networks. If you are using a simple router and switch as each machine accesses the internet the system will slow down - unless you have previously spoken with your ISP and they can provide the extra bandwidth / connection speed needed. I suspect you will need to set-up a server-based network - but this is out of my area of knowledge. -
Hi and welcome to ExTS You can - if you know they are hardware related you could post in the Hardware forums :)

There are emails doing the rounds that accuse the receiver of hacking into somebody's email or that compromising photographs are available of them / wife / girlfriend on line. The email may even be addressed to you personally ........Dear KenB, ......etc The email will contain an attachment which will, according to the writer, prove their claims. http://sophosnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/mal1.jpg?w=640 DO NOT open the attachment. The attachment contains a virus !! Sophos experts have come across a number of versions. However, they all have the same goal: to spread malware identified as Mal/EncPk-NS and Troj/Zbot-CCH. If you receive one of these emails simply delete it :)

[Solved] Can't access internet on Windows 2000
KenB replied to JL2008's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
In your first post you said Now you say that TCP/IP does not exist. There is something strange here. This machine does not have an AV. I am wondering if you have an infection. No CD drive ? Do you have a USB port? -
[Solved] Startup Error Windows XP
KenB replied to eusetep's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Download Revo Uninstaller from here: click here When you run it - it will list all installed software. ( This will take a few minutes ) Spigot / searchsettings.exe should show up. Highlight it > select Uninstall from the toolbar When prompted select the "Advanced" option. -
Hi Brian and welcome to ExTS 486 is a reference to the central processor on the main board. This was used along with Windows 95 / 98 ( it was a minimal requirement for Win98 ) You are looking for a system that was in use around 1999. Win 95 would run with a 386 machine - so there is no guarantee if you find a Win95 machine that it is a 486 processor.

I have done a bit of background reading on this one. Do you have "searchsettings.exe" or "Spigot / Spigot inc" in your list of Add/Remove from Control Panel ? If so I suggest that you delete them. See here -

You will have to be careful not to bend the pin. Is there a lady's nail board handy ? ( The type that is used to file nails ) You could cut this down and use the abrasive bit to clean the burnt pin. You could glue some very fine emery cloth to a match ( or 2 matches joined together ) A sharp, pointed knife may do it too. -
[Solved] Can't access internet on Windows 2000
KenB replied to JL2008's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If ping 127.0.0.1 doesn't function without any losses then we need to look at the Network Card / Hosts file / TCP/IP Also ...... as soon as you get back online you need an AV. MS Essentials / Avast / Avira are good free ones.
