1. 2 Fixes with one post ....................nice one starams5 :) bdfox1 Welcome to ExTS and thanks for posting. It is always good to hear when we have helped people :)
2. Hi Chris and welcome to ExTS In addition to J-B's questions ................is this a laptop or desktop? Do you see anything on the screen at all ? Give as much background information as you can please :)
3. Your options are therefore a little limited.
4. You DO have internet access now ???? Do you have the monitor icon bottom right of your screen ? If so - right click on this > Connect to a Network If you point your screen curser ( arrow ) at your network you should get some data shown Name Signal Strength Security Type .....................it is this that I am talking about. If it says WEP or WPA2 then you are ok.
5. That is good to hear Simon. Did you have to use the network key to access you network ? You need to - as if you didn't it is unsecured.
6. Hi and welcome to ExTS I am not a gamer - so advice may well be a bit limited. Your m/board supports up to 16GB RAM 1333 MHz, 1066 MHz, 1600 MHz You could increase this as you only have 4GB at the moment. Don't mix speeds as the system will just adopt the slower. Your m/board supports Crossfire ( 2 video cards linked ) You would get far better FPS using this. It needs 2 cards of the same type that support crossfire. Take a look here if you consider new Video Cards: click here You would probably need to upgrade your PSU if you upgrade the Video Card If you decide to use Crossfire then this obviously takes more current - hence a PSU with greater output potential.
7. Yep - that's it. Can you disable it and then SAVE the changes. With a bit of luck you should be able to connect to your own network
8. How did you uninstall the original drivers Jim ? Try using Revo Uninstaller and when prompted select "Advanced" This will remove all trace of the drivers - even from the registry. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html scroll down for the free version. Then try the new drivers again.
9. Hi Steve Welcome to ExTS I like your forum name - it reminds me of .....................ME :)
10. Hi and welcome to ExTS When you say that it sometimes takes half an hour to get going - is this booting up from being switched off ? Let's run a quick check for malware ....................just in case. Download MBAM from here [click on Products - you want the free version] http://www.malwarebytes.org/ You may get re-directed to a mirror site - this is OK. Install > Update > Run It will produce a log in Notepad. Copy this and post it here please. In the mean time try ( as a work-around) changing the Power Options from Control Panel Click on "Choose What Closing the Lid Does" Select Sleep. When you have finished using the laptop just close the lid. ( I do this with mine )
11. Let us know how you get on Jim :)
12. Hi Simon Sorry for the confusion ( Xp - 7 ) I looked at the OS below your forum name when replying. Reading this again I suspect the problem may lie with the WPS setup. The simple test is to disable this and go manual. WPS = WiFi Protected Setup. You didn't give me the model number of your router so I have no access to a manual. Usually you can access the router settings using the following method: Open Internet Explorer and in the address bar ( where it says http//www. ..............) delete all of that line and type in .. 192.168.1.1 If this gets you to the login screen the user name and password should both be admin. Once inside the router settings have a look around ( I cannot be more specific ) and see if you can find WPS enable / disable Disable this and save the settings. Try connecting to your network again. If it says it is unsecured we can do this manually ( I will need the manual for this )
13. Hi Simon Start > Run .....type in .....devmgmt.msc .............click the + next to Network Adapters. 1. Is there a yellow exclamation mark next to the entry with WiFi in it ? (there will be a Network Interface Card listed too ) 2. Please let me know exactly what is listed as a WiFi adapter. 3. If you click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) can you see your home network? 4. If you can - try to connect - you will need the Network Key ( on the back or underneath the router ) 5. If you can't see your network can you see any of your neighbours networks ? We need to know exactly what is listed for the Wireless Adapter - we may need to delete the drivers later and we need to know which ones to re-install. :)
14. If you are only 7 metres away there should be no problem - even with a cheap Wireless Adapter and router. What is the make and model number of : 1. your Desktop 2. your Router When you do have a connection - if you point the screen curser ( arrow ) at the small icon bottom right of screen that looks like 2 monitors ......how many vertical green bars can you see? How old is the router ? I had problems recently with the router dropping the connection and a replacement sorted this.
15. Jim Let etavares give you the all clear ( other thread ) then we can continue. There is little to be served running 2 threads on the same topic. :)
16. Hi Jim I would try to get the Vista version sorted first before downloading the Win7 upgrade. ( I assume there is no time limit on the download ? ) This upgrade will - I assume - keep your files etc in place. As a last resort you can try the upgrade to see if it solves the problem :) Also ............ Once you get a working Vista version with no problems it would be worthwhile creating an image of it (I think Nev mentioned this in the other thread)
17. Hi and welcome to ExTS Use this to check your connection speed. http://www.speedtest.net/ It will take a little time. Do not use the link to scan your machine. Wait for the test link to appear. It will say "Begin Test" Give me the download speed for your machine and your wife's machine too. Are both machines wireless and connected through a router?
18. Hi, I can emulate your problem by right clicking on the task bar at the bottom ( If I have applications open ) and select "Show Windows Stacked" Can you do the same but select "Close Group" ?
19. When Nev was at school the guy who invented the abacus used to go in to demonstrate it.
20. You may need to check in the BIOS that the voltage is set correctly when you get the new RAM.
21. Hi, Can you check the resolution and refresh rate ? Right click on the desktop > Personalize > Display Settings Try moving the slider to the left. Click on Advanced Settings button > Monitor 60 Hz is normal for the Refresh Rate
22. Crucial are a good make. However - if you are keeping your old modules you are still mixing voltages. ( 1.5 + 1.65 v )
23. OK Simon - keep in touch :)
24. Hi Drayton and welcome to ExTS Is your Operating System 32bit or 64bit ? If it is 32 bit you are wasting your money as 32 bit systems can only utilise about 3.5GB RAM - so 4GB is the max for this system. I think the voltage settings on your Patriot are 1.65v whilst the voltage of the Crucial is1.5v ( check ) I don't think you would be able to mix these two without problems. There are some folk who would disagree - but personally I would play safe and use RAM of the same voltage. You can mix the frequencies - 1600 / 1333 The RAM will all run at the lowest - in this case 1333 MHz
25. Hi and welcome to ExTS This "fix" involves making changes in the Registry. Before we start lets backup the registry - just in case. Start > type in .............System Restore ................ENTER You will see.. "To Create a Restore Point open System Protection" Click on this. Another box pops up > click on CREATE ( bottom right ) Give the restore point a name ( use the date if you like so that you know when it relates to ) This may take a minute or two. Once you have your restore point created do the following: Start > type in .....regedit .............ENTER Then click the > next to each of the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In other words once you have clicked the > next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE another menu appears. Find SYSTEM ......click the > next to this Then find CurrentControlSet .......etc. Once you have got to Class and click the > you may have to scroll down a bit to find 4D36E965 ......... Make sure you get the correct one. When you find it click on the key itself and in the right panel you should see ( amongst other things listed ) ...... Upper Filters and Lower Filters Right click on each of these in turn and select "Delete" Once you have done this exit from Regedit. Try the DVD again ( you may need a re-boot )
