  1. Hi Thanks for the last image :) It shows your drive as Disk 1 ( F: ) with "no media" ........... in other words it can't read what is on the drive and assumes there is nothing. Try running CheckDisk on the drive. Start > ...type in .....cmd ...ENTER [ this is for XP and assumes that you have an Admin account - Vista Win7 and Win 8 are different ] at the command prompt type in ......... chkdsk F:/f ......ENTER [ note there is a space after chkdsk ] This assumes that your drive is still allocated F: as a drive letter. Run CheckDisk - it may take some time - depends on the size of the drive. You can run this 2 or 3 times as often it picks things up on the second pass. CheckDisk scans the drive for errors and tries to repair anything it finds relating to bad sectors / lost clusters / directory errors etc. Try accessing the drive now,
  2. If you are unable to access the drive you will not be able to backup your data. I can't read the error report from the image you posted - can you give me the gist of what it says please ? Try this: Start > type in ......diskmgmt.msc ......ENTER If the drive shows here it will be given a Disk Number - Disk 0 is your main drive with Windows on it. If you right click on the partition that has the drive letter ( could be E: ) and select "Change Drive Letter ..." Change the drive letter to something like G: - as long as this is not the same as anything else showing there. Let me know the result and give me some idea what the error message is please :)
  3. Hi and welcome to ExTS By this I assume that it is showing as a drive in "Computer" ? If this is the case you should be able to run Seagate's diagnostics on it. click here You want the Windows version ( not DOS )
  4. Hi John The image you have given is Device Manager - I asked for a Disk Manager image. See my post number 8 :) This is totally different from Disk Management Device Manager - "location 0" refers to the BUS ( a circuit path ) that the device is connected to. Most hardware is on 0 or 1 In Disk Management each drive is identified separately and defined as disk 0 / 1 / 2 etc If disk 0 has partitions on it then they are given letters - C: / D: etc. The same applies for Disk 1 / 2 etc If for some reason the partition on one disk has the same letter as another then it will not show in "Computer" and will need to be allocated a new drive letter. This is why I asked for the screenshot of Disk Management. Your image showing "Volumes" with no data is normal - mine is the same.
  5. Hi Matt The system that you have at the moment is rather dated. 512 MB RAM - no wonder you get buffering :) I can't think of one good reason why you should upgrade this system. XP is not going to be supported by Microsoft from April 2014. You will not get any more security updates and your machine will, over time, become more vulnerable. Anti-Virus companies are not supporting XP either. Some have extended their support to 2015 / 16 but eventually this will die out too. You could add more RAM. Probably up to 2 GB - depends on what your motherboard will support. You could add an internal PCI Wireless Card You could add a DVD CD ROM You could look at upgrading to Win 7 but there is no guarantee that your hardware will be compatible and the cost of a Win7 disk is about £80 Admittedly ( without the Win7 disk ) this would be a cheaper option but at the end of the day you will still have an outdated, unsupported machine. If you can afford it I would look around for a Windows 7 machine. Stay away from Vista as this will be going the same way as XP - and Win 7 is a better operating system. One thing - if you do go for a refurbished machine - make sure that the operating system is genuine and legal. Just my thoughts - others here may be able to provide other options.
  6. Hi Ray I would say so - yes. If you take the card out and boot up - does the problem disappear from Device Manager ? Is there any identification marks on the TV Card ? Do you actually use it ? I don't think the driver for the TV Card is in any of the folders shown. Possibly the Audio - but this would be the on-board sound I think. If you can identify the card as the "Multimedia Video Controller" by removing it ( as above ) then we may be able to locate drivers for it from any ID Code you can supply. If you don't intend to use it - leave it out.
  7. Hi Ray Thanks for the pics. According to your Device Manager pic - the drivers are already installed for your Video Card. ( Display Adapters ) As there is no yellow exclamation mark - all looks OK with that. Can you confirm that all is OK - other than the "Multimedia Video Controller" .........which obviously is not your video card. It could be a video camera or similar. Your system is obviously getting on and the Video Card that you have is an AGP one. Things have moved on a bit since these. Your motherboard does not have a slot for a more up-to-date card.
  8. Either should be OK - it will even run in Safe Mode :)
  9. Hi Kev Download MBAM from here: - click here You want the FREE version Install > update > run it. ( quick scan ) Let MBAM delete what it finds. It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here please. Starbuck or etavares will advise further. ======== Found this that may be of interest - click here It doesn't seem to be particularly harmful - just possibly annoying.
  10. Hi I can't find anywhere on the Sony site that confirms the video card you state. I did find a spec for your motherboard: The card you quote is VGA and the m/board does have a VGA socket. If that is your card I found this ( after a long search ) It seems that Sony and Asus don't support your system now. click here Try the bottom one. Download it to your desktop ( do not install yet ) Right click on the file and scan it .....just in case. If OK ( it should be :) ) try these drivers. To find out exactly which card you have you would need to take it out. From your pics you are looking at the back of the card. It should say on the side where the blue fan is.
  11. Enjoy Yorkshire :)
  12. Hi Louise I will be available all day - so get back to me as soon as you like :) Any questions - just ask. Let me know what problems you are still having.
  13. If we told you about these - we would need to eliminate you ! [ couldn't resist that one :) ) One of our mods or other members may be able to answer this for you - not my area of expertise.
  14. No problem with the pics Ray :) The top one shows the Video Card quite nicely. If you take this out and look on the top surface there should be an identification code. It will be in big letters/numbers Hopefully we will be able to identify if and locate the drivers for it :)
  15. Hi Ray I can't find anything at all relating to what you have given above. Does your video card look something like this ? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/AGP-Video-Card.jpg Not this exact one obviously.
  16. Hi Peter Was it MAC Address Filtering or something else ? Other members may find this useful.
  17. I got the error 404 on the UK site. I can access the one in Ireland. I don't see your specific machine [ PCV-RS704 ] on the list. The nearest I see is PCV-RS700 If this is a desktop - do you have a separate Video Card installed ( not the onboard video ) ? You could take a look inside the case. The monitor cable connects directly to the video card ( if it is a card ) If you DO have a card we would need the make and model number so that the drivers can be located.
  18. Hi Ray I think this is a dial-up modem ........ not needed Right click and disable it. Also try right clicking onMulti Video Controller > Update Drivers Use the auto option .....you will need internet access. I tried looking on the Sony site and didn't come up with anything :(
  19. Hi Louise Let's take one step at a time. Most of what you ask for in your last post is possible. We will explain - simply. If you don't understand - ask :) Let's prioritise. You said earlier that the machine turns on by itself if you touch the keyboard. Is this the same for the mouse too? =================== As a "work-around" for the moment - The Windows Key ( bottom row on the left ) + D will take you back to the desktop at any time. =================== Can you outline the things that are annoying you in order of importance and we can take them one or two at a time :) =================== You may like this ......... Classic Shell It is a piece of software that will give you some features of XP and Windows 7 [ I have just installed it to try :) ] If you want to try it I suggest that you create a restore point first. This will allow you to return your system to a date before Classic Shell was installed - just in case :) Point the mouse curser to the top right corner of the screen Click on the magnifying glass Type in ....... create a restore point ..........hit ENTER Click on the "Create a Restore Point" box Click on the "Create" box Give your restore point a name "Before Classic Shell" identifies it as Windows auto creates restore points. Classic Shell is here - click here It is free. You can select XP or Win 7 options. I have mine set to Win 7 at the moment and the Start button for instance gives me what I get with my Win7 machine. The Win 8 Apps have disappeared and I get the desktop only - which is what you want. This is totally reversible by un-installing Classic Shell - failing that a system restore :) Remember - Windows Key + D will take you back to the Desktop at any time. You may wish to read some of these faq first - click here
  20. Hi Louise I am sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your new machine. Not sure what you are asking ....... do you want somebody to make a house call ? I have a general idea where you are from your IP Address ( just north of London ? ) I don't know of any of our staff who are in that specific area and we have never done this ........... once the precedent has been set others could expect it too :) We have infinite patience here - if you would like, we can try to resolve some of the problems with the machine. You should be aware that if you start trying to fix it yourself you may be voiding the warranty ( I know you don't have any faith in this ) but you don't want to do anything that gives the supplier a way out. I suggest that you contact them and get them to state - in writing ( even an email ) that it is OK for you to follow our advice to try to correct the problem that they obviously can't - without invalidating the warranty. ( there are no guarantees that we can either ) ================= This could be a BIOS setting. I have just skimmed back through your posts - I don't see a Make and model number for your computer. Let's start with that. ( accessing the BIOS will not invalidate any warranty :) ) ========== I have a feeling that this could be a very long process. We will stay with it as long as you are prepared to :)
  21. Hi again, Can you take a screen shot of what Disk Manager looks like please ? Open Disk Manager > press PrtSc key Open Paint > Paste Save As ...........save it as a .jpg to your desktop. On here .......... hit the Reply button > Go Advanced ( on the right side bottom of text box ) Manage Attachments ( underneath text box ) Add Files > Select Files ..............locate the .jpg that you just saved. Click on Upload Files After it has uploaded > Insert Line 1 > Done
  22. Hi Ray This is because your "foreign" drive has come from an XP Pro system and you are trying to correct it with an XP Home. XP Home cannot read dynamic disks. If you convert it to "Basic" you will lose the data from the disk. If you intend putting XP Pro on the 160 GB drive then you should be able to work with the 40GB "foreign" drive as suggested by kernel. This should give you access to your data on the disk. You can then install XP Pro on the 40GB drive if you wish. Regarding partitions on the disk ... When you install XP Pro it will identify the partitions and ask what you wish to do. You can remove them here and create one big partition if you wish. Remember to back-up anything you need beforehand. If your installation disk is not SP3 you will need to update this afterwards.
  23. You can do this - no problem. Just for clarity ... Are you trying to boot to Windows from the "foreign" hard drive ? or Are you still booting from the XP Home disk?
  24. The IP Address of Belkin routers is 192.168.2.1 You would type this into the address bar of your browser then hit ENTER The login username is either admin or none at all The password is left blank. I suggest that you change these as others will have access to the router. If the router has had these changed prior to you picking it up then you are locked out. [There may be a reset option to set it to factory settings)
