  1. OK - try this. When you get to the Welcome screen hold down CTRL + ALT then press DEL twice. This should give you the hidden Admin login. If you have an Admin password set use this. If not - leave it blank and hit ENTER Any luck with this ?
  2. Hi John Download Treesize from here - click here Install and run it. It will give you an analysis of file sizes. It may take a bit of searching but it may show up "odd" file sizes.
  3. Download the free version of Revo-Uninstaller from here - click here Run it and delete F-Fox using the "Moderate" option. Then d/l F-Fox again and install it.
  4. Could you ask a friend / relative to d/l for you ? A re-install is probably your best bet. Although ... is a bit worrying. What exactly does this error message say ?
  5. I know there are 3 of us offering suggestions but it would help if you could answer the questions asked to make things clearer for us. I asked earlier ... You can give this a try - but removing the CMOS battery has much the same effect. Are you sure that you have CAPS LOCK off ? The password is case sensitive.
  6. This could be related to your Anti-virus. I have seen this before where the AV stores data on a daily basis. Do you still want to go down the new hard drive route - or look at the possibility of this being large files stored by the AV ? If it is the AV causing the problem - cloning the drive to a new one will only transfer the problem anyway :)
  7. There is an option to a) scan the hard drive with an external Anti-Virus or b) do a complete reinstall With Win7 there is an option to download the Operating System ( free ) and reinstall. It may be worth trying the above before you pay out for repairs. Let me know what you decide :)
  8. Hi If you can get to the Start-up Options is "Repair your Computer" there? If so - give that a try. If it asks for an installation disk we are running out of options. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DNQxQWDZpoc/T4XFbwrIYCI/AAAAAAAAAG4/hoTs6b6eo-k/s1600/08b97cca_windows-7-startup-menu.png
  9. Part of the problem solved :) When you did this did you clear cookies and cache too ? https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/gallery/images/2012-02-17-14-54-33-834a5e.png
  10. It will probably be a case of too many cooks ............ but I will post anyway :) You said this in post #1 Then in post #8 You accessed the BIOS - but what you have done will not enable the USB ports. Is your mouse and keyboard working now? Is it this screen that you cannot get past ? http://windowsitpro.com/content/content/20542/xpwelcome.jpg
  11. Hi This is not a high-end card and, for normal usage, the cpu should cope. If you are playing games then you may well have problems as neither the graphics card or the cpu will cope with more graphics intensive games. Some installations automatically disable the on-board - some don't. take a look here it may help - click here This is the minimum requirement for Win7 - 32 bit. If you have 64 bit then 2 GB is the minimum that you should have.
  12. Hi, Which browser are you using ? Try clearing Cookies on your machine. (if Internet Explorer ) click here Can you try a different Browser - FireFox or other ?
  13. Hi kimi and welcome to ExTS To add a little to what Armageddon has said ..... There are various ways to access the BIOS ( different for each .... depends what you have ) Try this : ( from HP site ) In the BIOS you are looking for Boot Options / Boot Sequence or similar. The DVD CDROM should be first in the boot order. If it isn't move it up. It will explain how to do this on screen. Don't forget to Save and Exit - usually F10.
  14. If you take the hard drive out of your system and replace it with a larger one the old one is still useful for storage. It can be used much the same as a USB memory stick. Hard drives come in 2 different sizes laptops = 2.5 inch desktops = 3.5 inch There are also 2 types IDE = older type SATA = mostly used now They are totally different connections An enclosure is a small box-like device to put the old hard drive in so that you can connect it up via the USB port and use it just like a memory stick. click here Check which connections you have on your drive. click here If you need more advice - just ask :)
  15. Which graphics card did you install ? Did you disable the on-board graphics after installing the graphics card? You can do this in Device Manager. Could be a conflict causing the slowness.
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS 0xc000000f error - did this also say "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: ..... " ? Have you removed any devices that are connected to USB ports ? Have you checked that there is not a CD left in the tray ? Can you get to the Advanced Startup Options ? Click F8 about once per second after switching on. If you can - use the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. Failing that - will it start up in Safe Mode ( from the list of options after tapping F8 ) ?
  17. Hi Plastic Nev is probably the best one to advise on this ( unless one of the other mods jumps in ) He should pick this up soon :)
  18. Hi Does she get an error message? If so - can you post it here please ?
  19. Hi As Ray says you could replace the small hard drive with a larger one. And you could also buy an 2.5 inch SATA enclosure and make use of the old drive for extra storage. It is possible to backup a lot of your files / photos etc to another drive. Delete a lot of the unused installed software. This could free up some space but probably not enough - it depends what you have on your system. You don't say if you have an installation disk for your system. I suspect that the answer is "no" - but please confirm. If you do not have an installation disk for Vista it is possible to clone the hard drive. This method gives you an exact copy of what is on the drive already which you can copy to a larger drive. We need to know which method you are going to use.
  20. So your neighbour doesn't know you are using their connection ? :) Do you know what type of router they have ?
  21. I assume that your neighbour's wi-fi is unsecured ? ( no password :) )
  22. Found this review on Amazon .... You may wish to do a bit more Googling to discover if it is really what you need.
  23. Take a look at this - example only - click here It is wireless ( wired if necessary .... but this puts an ethernet cable around the house which is unsightly ) You would need a wireless router and a wireless adapter in your son's computer. There is another option: click here This uses the house wiring to extend the range of the router. I think, in the UK, it depends on how you have the mains wiring arranged. In my home I have 2 ring mains. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. If the router is downstairs and you wish to extend to upstairs then I am not convinced that this will work if you have separate rings. Suggest that you google the two devices and read the reviews. ( these are examples only and not recommendations ) Perhaps Plastic Nev can throw some light on this from an electrical point of view ?
  24. Hi joddle I cannot think why what you are trying to do would work - without problems. The embedded code in your XP machines is for an XP licence. I don't know for sure - but this, I think, will not be compatible with the Win7 installation. ( unless it simply recognises a Dell install disk ?? ) The thing to do is back up the important data off the XP system - then give it a try. If it fails you can always revert to XP. I would be interested to hear the result :)
