  1. Hi Louise Take a look here - click here and here - click here Hope this helps ? You may wish to quote this from his tweet ... email should be sebastian.james@****** Once you have replied I will remove his email address :)
  2. You have gone from 2 x 2GB ..............to ..............2 x 4GB ...........is this correct ? Whilst CL7 is marginally faster than CL9 you should see a significant difference by doubling the RAM. This is always the best option if you want a faster machine - as long as you don't exceed the limit of the motherboard. 1600Mhz is faster than 1333Mhz. Something else to watch is the operating voltage of the modules. I am assuming that the voltage rating of the new RAM is 1.65v otherwise you would probably have had problems. One more thing - 32 bit Operating Systems can only "see" 4GB RAM. I assume yours is 64 bit ?
  3. Hi Ian Glad to hear that your problem is now solved. It sounds as if it was an ISP problem after all :) I will mark this solved for you.
  4. Hi Jane It probably is. I found this: click here Note - this is for XP machines only. I am not on my XP machine so cannot verify that this "fix" will work. You may wish to wait to see if one of the other staff here has another option. If you do decide to give it a try - save the files to your desktop ......easier to find :)
  5. Hi Steve You are not alone :) First time I did this I used the keyboard too. You are very welcome. If you have more problems - you know where we are.
  6. C-Cleaner is OK as long as you are not tempted to use the Registry Option. There is another one that is a little safer ...... TempFileCleaner .......click here
  7. It wasn't annoying - just frustrating :) Nice one Armageddon - appreciate the input :)
  8. You are welcome - let us know what you decide to do. The manual Nev linked to is very helpful and makes taking it apart that much easier.
  9. Hi Steve If your old drive is SATA then yes - you have the right one :)
  10. Hi Steve Yes - a hard drive enclosure or caddy. Couple of things you would need to know: Laptop hard drives are 2.5 inch - [ desktop drives are 3.5 inch ] Older hard drives are IDE - newer ones are SATA - ( different connections ) take a look here - click here Some examples - click here
  11. I like to think of it as efficiency :)
  12. Hi Steve http://s.myniceprofile.com/myspacepic/478/47831.gif Did you manage to activate Win7 ? Your original hard drive - you can still access this if there are files etc on it that you need. If you don't need anything then you can put it in an enclosure ( very cheap ) and use it as an external drive for storage. Do you need access to it?
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS If this is the case then the "video card" would seem to be OK. Yes it could. There is a very small, flat cable that runs from the motherboard to the screen. This could have come loose ( you would get no picture at all if this was the case ) or it could have a brake in it that moves when the machine is heated up. The cable runs through the hinge and this is sometimes a cause of the cable fraying. If it isn't the cable then it could well be the screen itself. It is possible to pick up a replacement screen ( about $65 ) on eBay Now for the really bad news. Laptops are really difficult to work on. You may wish to entrust this work to a repair technician. If you are going to do this get a quote for the two jobs first. It may be that a replacement laptop is a better option and run this one off the monitor as you are at the moment.
  14. Randy has said what I would have done :) MS_Essentials is a very good AV ..... and the price is right too. ( This is what I use )
  15. You are very welcome If you have any more problems you know where we are :) Just a note: If you save a document in the Open Office Writer ( Word ) it will save as a .odt extension This is not normally a problem if you are using just this machine. If, however, you wish to open this document on another machine that does not have Open Office on it then there may be problems. All you need to do is when you click on File > Save As ..... where it says "Save as Type" ....... click the down arrow and select one of the .doc options ( Word 97 for instance ) Save it in this format and it will be able to be opened in Microsoft Word too.
  16. Hi Steve You could have changed this in the Boot.ini file on XP ............ :) You will need to activate your installation within 30 days. Take a look here: - click here
  17. You will appreciate what I made for my grandson :)
  18. Hi Louise This is not directly linked with Open Office. User Account Control is part of Windows and it is there to monitor software being installed and then ask you for permission to allow it. This does not mean that because UAC has popped up that the software is bad. When UAC pops up - take a close look at what it says. If "Open Office" or "Apache" is mentioned it is OK to allow it. ( Apache are the people who developed the software ) Let me know how you get on.
  19. Hi Louise Is this Open Office from my link ? If so - I have just download the latest version to update the one I have. The Icon on your desktop should say "Open Office 4.0.1" ................does it ? If it does - this is the most recent version and should not need updating. You should only need to do this once. Let me know if it is Open Office and which version it says you have. ( I never got prompted to update my older version )
  20. Try adding Barclays to the trusted sites in IE. https://bank.barclays.co.uk/ Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites Add the above link to the trusted sites. Check the Restricted Sites and make sure it is not listed there. If this doesn't do it try "Reset all Zones to Default level" under the Security Tab.
  21. Hi - you can access it with FireFox or Chrome still ? Try this with IE Open IE > Tools > Manage Add-ons Click on the individual Add-on and disable all of them. If this solves it you need to enable them one at a time to find out which. If no luck you can enable them again if you wish.
  22. It looks as if HP and Lexmark have defeated us :(
  23. As Starbuck says - Win8 does take some getting used to. I have XP - Vista - Win7 and Win 8 machines. Win8 is totally different and takes some getting used to. It is, however, OK and I am now tending to like it. Let us know if you have any more questions. Remember - no question is a silly one if you don't know the answer :)
  24. Hi Louise and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help :) You really don't want to go back to XP. Not sure if you are asking if you can have XP on the machine at the same time as Win8 ? This is called "Dual Booting" but again - you should be advised that this is not a good idea as Microsoft are withdrawing support for XP early in 2014 and your machine would then be vulnerable. Regarding Office 2003 According to the MS Compatibility Center - ( click here ) it is compatible ..... but only the Standard version. You would need the installation CD. ( not sure if you can only install this on one machine - I assume that this is the case ) There is, however, a totally free option. Open Office - click here This is totally compatible with MS Office. With Open Office Word you need to be aware that this saves in a format that MS Word will not open. You can, however, select a MS Word compatible format to save in. Not really a disadvantage ......especially for free :) If you need more information .....just ask :)
