I'm using a Satellite TOSHIBA about 5 years old. Trying to download WINDOWS Updates has caused me some concern. Normally I would expect a download from WINDOWS to be around 120 - 145 mbt/s but all I can get is an 8%-10% download then a stop. I've tried this in a good downloading spot with a high speed internet (WiFi) during peak and not so peak hours. The downloader is a tad slow for my preferences but should not be for a WINDOWS Update. My system (Win 7 64-bit) has been trying to install the KB2814124 update for a while now and it always hangs at "installing update 1 of 1..." I've run Fixit and it says it's fixing something with Windows Update, but that specific update still won't install, even though others have just fine. Is there some way I can download this file myself and install it without using Windows Update? Everything I've seen on the MS site says to use Windows Update, but that just isn't working for me. I had a rootkit issue in 8/12. I thought Tss Killer had taken care of it; however, I just realized that the damage done by the virus still remains. I read what I could on restoring the update process and tried everything. I ran the Fixit dude many times, no help at all. I read about recreating BITS and tried it but it does not seem to work. Update starts, says its downloading 70MB and then freezes, nothing happens, I've watched the processes and BITS is not running and update is not functioning. I managed to get system restore points to work again. I also just noticed my modem's power light was amber; it's supposed to be green, so I reset it to the factory defaults. I run MS defender and security and a firewall utility set to medium, so that all outgoing requests have to be confirmed by me. I read somewhere that a virus might block the port that win7 uses for updates, but I could not find the port. I have a large system over 500GB of programs and data, I do not want to install 100's of programs all over again if I can get update to work again. We have a WSUS that is on a closed network, we have downloaded the updates and our WSUS server says that the updates are ready, when I right click and the menu bar on the bottom and click on properties and then click notifications and look at customize notifications the yellow update shield is under the line that says past items and on the drop down menu it says to always show, however I can not get the shield to show up for me to click onto down load updates. The funny thing is that everything was working fine until we installed the latest updates for .Net 4 frame work the WSUS shield has not shown up to down load updates. View this thread

I have Win 7 Home Premium which has had updates set to automatic and that has worked fine ...... until a few weeks ago. Now it's set on the "notify me and let me decide" option for all updates and the Change Settings bar is grayed out (not functional) such that "notify me" is the only way updating will work. There is a banner heading the page which says some setting options have been fixed or removed by the system administrator. I'm the only user of the machine and have the account that identifies me as the system administrator, under which I log in all the time, but .... still no access to Change Settings bar. I still take care of the updates, but would like to get back to it being automatic. How can I get rid of (or bypass) this system administrator blockade and activate change settings again? Thanks! Hi.. I upgraded to windows 8 pro from windows 7 a few days ago & windows update was just working fine up until now... I get an error code 80240440, whenever I try to check for updates.. I tried troubleshooting it & it finds & fixes these two issues- 1) potential windows update database error detected 0x80070490. 2) windows update components must be repaired. it always fixes these issues but problem remains same & I get the same error code... I tried troubleshooting several times but I always get the same message as mentioned above. its really annoying... how do I fix it guys? please help!!! thanks! View this thread

Hi guys...I am a fan of what you do here and really appreciate it. I have run into some trouble with my PC and do not have anyone to turn to. My computer has been infected with a malware called Avasoft Antivirus Professional. It is a faux-antivirus that is taking over my system. I have been searching for hours for a solution but all I can find are other malwares that claim they can remove this (eg. spyhunter) I have Windows 7. I am really distraught. I installed this update (KB2807986). After restart, I could not open AOL, Chrome, Itunes and several other programs. IE8 was OK (of course, it's Microsoft!) Tried rebooting several times with same results. Did system restore, everything back to normal. I will not re-install this update! My system is Win7 Ultimate, 64 bit. XP Pro Version 2002 SP 3 Pentium 4 3.2 GHz 2 GB RAM Recently had a Trojan, eliminated by MSE. Still cannot get automatic updates to work. Nor can I delete MixiDJ from IE.
