  7. Hello. My Win8 x64 can't restart after update. It goes into blue screen (CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED) and then - to system restore.System restore manages to restore my system, but updates are uninstalled again.I did manage to install some updates from that date, when I started installing them one by one. 8. I'm using Win 7 Pro (32 bit). Everyday when I first boot up, the first thing I do is run Windows Update and check for new updates. Today when I opened Windows Update, it stated that I had NEVER checked updates and that I should do so! So I had it perform an Update and it stated that there were no new updates - which is good, however all the Update History is gone. I upgraded to Win 7 Pro years ago, when it first came out and there's been hundreds of updates in the past. The record of them are all gone. Not really a huge problem, as I wouldn't know what to do with this list and as long as Update states that I'm up to date I suppose it doesn't really matter. However, it's an anomaly that I thought I'd share. The only program which I installed an update to yesterday was Windows Phone - App Preview 3, because I just bought a Windows Phone 8. I'm not sure that this was the root of the issue, but the install/upgrade was problematic, failed and needed to be re-installed a second time. My wife's computer, who performs a daily Update as well doesn't have this issue. I did not install the Windows Phone - App Preview 3 on her computer. Thoughts? View this thread

  15. Okay, so I'm using Windows 7 on my HP dv6 laptop, and for some reason every time I update my computer, windows is unable to restart. It finally starts after I do system repair and/or system restore a number of times or until system restore says it has no more restore points. More often than not the start up repair says that there is a problem but the start up repair could not fix it, so I send the information to microsoft with the "send info" button. Last night (3/15/2013) my computer installed 1 update. I go to turn it on this morning and windows fails to start. I go through system repair and tell it to do system restore. It actually worked successfully and I checked the details to see what the root problem was. System repair concluded that a patch was preventing windows from starting. I restart the computer and low and behold, windows, despite the successful repair, fails to start again. My computer as we speak is attempting to repair itself again. I am using my brother's computer, also a windows 7 but on an HP dv5 and it does not seem to suffer from these issues. This should not be happening. What is wrong and how can I fix it? 18. System capable of supporting it. 1rst step of install has load drivers option to install device driver to access your hard drive. Try to install-none on OS disk which I guess makes sense. The cd which contained drivers and utilities that came with the computer with the vista 32 bit, it states that it cannot find any drivers there either. Does this mean that the drivers on the cd and in my computer will not work? And if so: Do I need to get vista 64device drivers to continue? Where do I get them or download them from? And do I need to have 64 bit drivers for every device and function on my device manager list? Thanks Ron View this thread

  23. I just installed all the March 2013 windows updates, there were about 3 or 4 of them I believe. One of them is KB 2807986. It seems that as soon as I install Windows Update KB 2807986 my computer will never shut down properly. When I choose start, shut down, or reboot, it will stay stuck on the 'shutting down' screen for hours. The only way to shut it down is to hit the power button. Thinking there may be a problem with windows update, I tried to install it using the update file from the windows update catalog site, but the same problem happens if I do that. As soon as I uninstall KB 2807986, my computer shuts down properly again. Windows Update KB 2807986 is the only update that causes this problem. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I should be able to install this update and not have a problem rebooting or shutting down. View this thread
  24. About three weeks ago (2/20/13), I allowed my computer to do windows update. It configured the updates, and then went to restart. And it never came back on. I pressed the power button, and nothing would get it to come back on. It would power up for a half second and then die again. This means, the fans and LEDs would power up, then die a second later. There was no BIOS, nothing on the screen. It would die way too quickly for my monitor to even recognize that the computer was on yet. I have a windows 7 x64, home edition, I believe.Wondering if a component went bad, I unplugged all the hardware (optical drive, the hard drive, video card, RAM, fans) leaving only the motherboard, CPU, and Power Supply as variables in the problem (plus the windows update itself).I tested the power supply using a paperclip trick, to bridge the green and black wires of the power supply's motherboard plug to jump the power supply into starting, and the power supply seemed to start up okay. I concluded the motherboard or processor had died.I spent $300 on a new motherboard and processor, and the computer still would not start, so that wasn't the problem after all. At this point, I was beyond furious. I KNOW windows update caused the problem. Somehow, a software change had physically affected my hardware! I took my computer to the geek squad to see if they could give me any ideas... And surprise surprise, the guy in line next to me was picking up his laptop from repairs for the same exact problem, caused by the same exact windows update. He said that he let it update, it went to restart, and it never powered up again. I have since searched online and I see that this problem was wide-spread. I am not crazy. Windows update literally killed my computer.Geek squad tested my power supply and told me that the readings were normal for the half-second the computer powered up. They then gave me the idea to test my power button itself. They thought perhaps it had worn out and wasn't triggering, which didn't make any sense because I shouldn't have needed to touch the power button at all-- the computer was supposed to start up on its own from the restart. But, it was the last thing I had left to check.I literally had to bust apart my case (value of the case being $100+) to unplug the power button. I then rigged a small jumper cable to start the motherboard without a power button. There was no change in the behavior of the problem. I then concluded it HAD to be the power supply after all... sure enough, after some more false starts, the power supply then started smoking.I bought a new power supply. Now I have spent $450 on this so far if I don't plan on replacing the busted case. I called windows support and they seemed oblivious to the fact that this problem was wide-spread, and refused to take any responsibility. I was told that I would have to pay $60-70 for tech support, who would probably be clueless or denying that windows update caused it. I threatened to sue, but still got no where with this. Obviously, I believe windows should be held responsible for the damages. Even if it is impossible to get them to pay me reparations, the least they could do is help me fix my PC for free.Today I plugged in my new power supply with my new motherboard and new processor, and actually got the computer to start up. Fans and LED lights are working, hard drive sounds like it is kicking on OK. I went through the BIOS setup menu. Then windows would not start. It recommended a startup repair, then system resptore, which I allowed. Unfortunately, that did not work. I tried it again. It still did not work. I checked the start-up repair diagnosis and details, and they were as follows.Last successful boot time: 2/20/2013. System Disk = DeviceHarddisk0. AutoChk Run = 0. Number of root causes = 1.I scrolled down to find: Root cause found: A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting. Repair Action: System Restore. Result: Failed. Error code = 0x1f. Repair action: System files integrity check and repair. Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490. There was nothing else to be done, so I tried memory diagnostic instead. It ran a check on the hardware and told me there was a hardward problem. It said that if I had plugged in any new devices, such as a camera, that I should unplug it and restart. Well, I didn't even have my wireless internet card plugged in. Just the USB keyboard and a USB wireless mouse, and my monitor. If there is a hardware problem, it would be with my hard drive. I tried another system restore from 2/17/13, but it "did not complete successfully." Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x80070002). It suggested that I try a different restore point so I tried one at 2/3/13 with the same results. As far as I can tell, the only way to get a working computer would be to reformat or to reinstall windows and lose all my old files. I absolutely cannot do that. I have some of my stuff backed up on an external hard drive, but I could not fit everything. I'm going to attempt to reinstall windows while keeping my old files, but that may not even work. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? At this point I am angry enough to storm MS headquarters, and I'm betting it wouldn't be hard to find an army of like-minded victims willing to join me. $450 down the drain because I TRUSTED windows, because I clicked that little button that said "update now". I've had problems with windows update before, but nothing like this. Please and thank you to anyone who tries to help. View this thread
  25. So I'm having trouble with the automatic 'configuring windows' screen just like everyone else.Computer is 1 week old. Windows 8 64bit. Turned the computer on Thursday and the auto config started....hung at 15%.....and finally after 90 minutes rebooted.Spent 30 minutes chatting with a microsoft 'representative' who was completely useless. Told me NOTHING. Then, sent me a link that was supposed to help but the link was to the microsoft windows 8 home page. F'ing useless.Started this morning, same thing.confirmed that i had the latest version of anti virus software.Uninstalled both audio/video drivers tried to run delmigprov.exe.tried to manually KB2756872 but says it is already installed. What now????? I spent 800.00 for a computer that is loaded with software microsoft knows if flawed?????? If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. But, I am not a programer so it must be 'dummed down' for me. Thank god my little lap top works so I can communicate with the outside world....Thanks in advance for listening to me rant.Update: Windows found 5 more updates for me. Tried to load and after 10 minutes 3 loaded and 2 did not. Found this on a board for one of them; Was having the same problem with KB2770917. Just found a solution that worked. Hit windows key + R to open Run command. Type in msconfig.exe and hit entergo to the Services tab on the topCheck the box on the bottom that says hide all microsoft services Click Disable allRestart the computerInstall updateAfter installation follow the same instructions but click enable all instead of disable all and restart again and everything should be good. Hopefully it works for others. I tried it and it was successful, rebooted, and it ran a windows update again but this time faster. Still haven't reinstalled my sound drivers. Will try and reinstall and see what happens. I still hate Windows 8.********* View this thread
