After downloading the normal stream of Windows Updates, I ran into a problem installing the files. My PC hung at Update 1 of 3, and has just sat there for hours. The error message states, ""Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update x of n." I'm a little afraid on how to proceed. Suggestions? View this thread

Last did an update on 02/21/2013. That was also the last time I booted this machine. Tried to check windows updates this evening and started getting the eror. Tried MS Mr Fixit, a couple different restore points, stopped and restarted bits and wuauserv. Can't seem to get by this. Is this a MS issue or mine? Any suggestions? Win 7, 64bit View this thread

After automatic updates on March 13, 2013, I receive 'page cannot be displayed' while trying to view 'some' webpages. It seems the webpages mostly effected by the update are webmail or browser popups where the email should be opening. This happens on both windows xp, and windows 7 machines after updates from MS. All 4 machines use the update automatically setting and are up to date. Symptoms: XP= Outlook would no longer connect to the pop3 server to send/receive. Outlook would display the login screen as if the password wasn't correct for the mail server login. I opened IE browser and went to *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and received 'page cannot be displayed' I tried www.the-same-domain-name.com and received page cannot be displayed. (Hosting company service call said they had no issues) I can ping every url listed with no problems. Downloaded Chrome browser and received same error page cannot be displayed. Other webpages including some https websites would load fine. XP box uses Microsoft Security Essentials.I plugged in a laptop to the same network that did NOT have the March 13 updates and could log in with no trouble. Windows 7= displayed similar issues. Totally different location across town.Cannot log into web based email accounts.Outlook would display downloaded email headers but when opening the emails the popup window cannot be displayed. Long delays while loading websites causing page cannot be displayed. Firefox same results. Effecting 3 different win7 boxes using MSE, Mcafee, and Norton respectively. Laptop with no updates on same network would load the websites but with sections of the page missing images and error page cannot be displayed on only portions. (The java applet loaded, Html did not) Solutions I tried:Reboot computersRelease/renew Flush dnsVirus scans clean Check that proxy was not used. All using dhcp Reset security zones Disable Firewall and Anti-virus Checked Hosts file and more.. feel free to ask. Interesting information: Resetting the MODEM will fix the problem temporarily (30 mins or so)Xp is connected directly to modem, no router. Win 7 on router/modem. Online system restore failed on xp. Online system restore for win7 reported fail but on reboot and viewing installed updates they were removed and websites still could not be displayed. ( I re-installed updates for security reasons) A friend told me he received an email from MS stating there was a known issue and a hotfix was pending. Can anyone confirm this? What does the hotfix apply to? If it does exist please link to the email or post. My google-fu is failing me and I could not find any information on a hotfix. Feel free to ask any questions, or post similar issues / solutions. I know its the weekend. Thanks for your time. View this thread

I upgraded my Dell laptop E1505 from XP to Windows 7. Internet explorer 9 was installed with this upgrade. Now Windows update is trying to upgrade IE 9 with IE10. I has continued to fail with error code 9C5J. I have reviewd possible fixes. Tried installing all the additional x86 software required (some indicated they are not for this computer). I have tried to download IE 10 (saved to the harddrive) and ran as admin. Still the same error. Is there a solution to this problem? View this thread

I think a ?virus corrupted updater, I'm fairly certain I've cleaned the virus with PC Cleaner AV, but don't know how to fix updater. Running Win 7 within VMware Fusion on Mac OS 10.6. I do have a "snapshot" of my Win 7 when it was first installed, and of course the Win 7 Home Premium DVD. I still don't know which files I need to retrieve and replace the damaged ones. Hi. I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 2, 32-bit OS. For the past few days, Windows Update has been telling me that I have Important update: Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2799494) and Optional update: Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.145.1925.0). I've installed them, restarted my computer, and not moments later, do I see the Available Updates icon appear and the same updates are there again. I've tried installing them one at a time and restarting before going onto the next one, but they are still appearing. Can someone please tell me what is going on and how I can fix this? Much Obliged! Installed explorer 10 via windows update successfully. After restart, no shortcut on desktop. Trying to start iexplorer.exe manually does not open.Downloading a copy from microsoft website works but does not install indicating tha a process is already active. There still exist a subfolderof "Internet Explorer" where iexplorer.exe is located. In SIGNUP subfolder a file "install, ins" contains iexplorer version 10 data. Before I delete the Internet Explorer subfolder, what can be done to get explorer active. Also, there is no entry for the explorer in the "Programs and Features" entry of the Control panel. I just got a new Laptop today (Acer) with windows 8. This afternoon I set it all up, installed it. Followed the instructions on screen, like anyone would. I've used it already... Installed basic programs I need. Then when I had to leave for a bit, I turned the computer off and the " Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer" message came on. So I left it like that.. I moved my computer to another location (I did close the lid while moving it, but that does not count as turning off does it?) and left it (with the lid open) plugged in. I figured it would shut down on it's own. When I came home and wanted to turn it on, on the screen it said "Diagnosing PC" and then "Attempting repairs". Now I heard that apparently there was a short power out while I was away... could this have caused the configuration to be interrupted? What happens when the computer is turned off while configuring? I'm sure I'm not the first person this has happened to? But what bugs me is that the laptop is brand new, started up today for the first time ever. Now the "Attempting repairs" message just keeps sitting there. Is there anything to be done? Or will it just take time and do I need to have patience? I'm always a little weary when it comes to things like this... What do I do? View this thread

I get the "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer" error. After chasing all over the internet for the last 6 days looking up various errors, the consensus is to re-register MSXML3.Dll. However, this fails with "DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll failed", whether I do it as administrator or not. The problem may be that MSXML 3.0 is not installed apparently (not in Add or Delete programs list). Whether it was installed and somehow got deleted, I have no idea. Previously, I was having update problems with .net fixes, so (with great difficulty) I deleted and re-installed the .net frameworks. The problem may have arisen there. I would download/install MSXML 3.0 but there doesn't seem to be one available. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks! View this thread

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium edition. On Wednesday night, as I shut down my computer - it installed some updates (I think there were 6 but not sure which ones). When I turned the computer on on Thursday, it got to the "preparing to configure windows" screen with the little blue circle spinning to show it's loading but then it never went any further. An hour later I came back and still the same thing. I've rebooted it several times. Put it into safe mode (which loads fine). Tried using the windows repair tool, used the "fix problems with windows update" option from the control panel however it just says it wasn't able to automatically fix the issues and when listing the components it just says 'not fixed'. I haven't got any previous system restore points to back up to apparently (I assumed they were created automatically - but apparently not!). Whenever I restart normally, the same issue occurs and it never progresses past that same message screen. Right now I'm in safe mode with networking which loads fine and works fine. Any suggestions or solutions to help windows load normally again would be most welcome!! Thank you :) View this thread
