  1. I recently bought a laptop and wasn't too keen on the Windows 8 start screen, therefore I downgraded as I downloaded Classic Shell to get a start menu etc. I now want to go back to Windows 8 desktop but I don't know how to. Can anyone help me please? Thankyou View this thread
  2. Hi, I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit with service pack 2. I am unable to get automatic updates. I get an error code 80070490. I did post for help some time back, but I didn't see the reply until months later as I'd been ill. Anyway, I tried following the instructions to uninstall service pack 2 to enable me to do a repair from my disc, but service pack 2 is not in my add/remove programs. My hard drive had crashed prior to all this happening, but I never linked the problem with not being able to do updates to that until I was following the steps to uninstall service pack 2. The technician that replaced my original hard drive put in 2 new ones and mirrored them. This lasted less than an hour and the computer crashed again. They then took out the raid drive and installed another single one (no more mirror). The final replaced hard drive has remained stable so far. So to get to the point, I have now found that I have 5 'backups'. The first one is named BACKUP, the second is named Windows.old' followed by Windows.old.000, Windows.old.001 and Windows.old.002. I'm assuming these were done each time they replaced the hard drives. I searched through all of those backups and the only data I found relating to Service Pack 2 is in the first BACKUP. There are approximately 100 files there for KB948465. All are .MUM files that start with Package_for_KB948465. The last file is also a .MUM but is named VistaSP2-KB948465 with a whole lot of numbers after that. That is the only information I can find anywhere for service pack 2 so I have no idea how to uninstall it now in order to repair my computer from my original disc. Is there a way around this problem? I really would appreciate any help so that I can get my updates working again. Thanks in advance. 3. Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656351) and Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2600217) even though Installer says these were sucessfully installed (repeatedly) My update history was displaying multiple 'successful' installations of these updates over a period of many days (re-installed everytime I shut down my PC). However, now they are not appearing at all. In fact my update history appears to be blank. What does this mean. I have run anti-virus, tried to install manually and tried the Fix It programmes as well as running in clean boot mode. View this thread

  5. This is pretty high level, but will be glad to try to get data if I am told exactly what to provide, and how to obtain this information. I find that since installing SP1 on Windows 7 on this pc (Dell Studio XPS, 64 bit) that the machine crashes, hangs, or bluescreens after a Windows Update. I usually have to reboot it twice (hangs the first time, gives recovery options the second time), then it never crashes again--until the NEXT time there is a Windows Update. The cynical solution would be to never install the updates, but I don't want to do that in case there is some critical security update that is really needed. So as I said on the onset some direction would be appreciated as to what I should do to capture the needed information to resolve this hideous cycle as I described. Thanks. View this thread
  6. I have scanned my computer with Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and even the Microsoft Security Scanner. I have scanned with all three because for the past few days my computer has been beeping and getting the blue screen of death. I thought I had gotten rid of any virus I may or may not have had had, but I noticed something strange. I was done using my computer for a while, but planned to come back to it later, so I simply closed the laptop, so when I came back I didn't need to wait for the boot-up process. When I DID come back though, the computer had already shut off, even though I didn't turn it off! It came up to a black screen that said "Your computer hasn't shut down properly". I don't remember the full lines, but I get the screen again, I'll write it down. I'm using the computer right now, and I have deleted all the newly downloaded programs, and kept the ones I trust. 19. Hi guys! How do I permit installing windows updates for a limited user account on a Windows 7? This is a "standalone" PC: there is no AD, WSUS, etc... I tried to do this with a local group policy to permit non-administrative accounts to install updates. But it said to have no effect on a Windows 7 (and yes, there is no effect, actually). Is there any other methods to permit it? The second part of my question is about permitting the installation of third-party software (e.g. JRE, Adobe Acrobat, etc...) updates for a limited user account. What is the less time-consuming (and at the same time, the most secure:))) way to do this? I know there is a way to do this with AppLocker...any other suggestions? View this thread

  24. Hello, I'm caught in a technical glitch that has been costing me hours. Any help you can offer is most appreciated. Basically I run Windows XP Professional. However, the autoupdates were not turned on. So I'm now at Service Pack 2.0 - YEAR 2002. I'm trying to get to Service Pack 2.0 YEAR 2003, however every time I do that it will not install saying, "The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install". Why don't I just go right to Service Pack 3.0 and bypass this? Well because that install doesn't work because I'm not originally on 2.0 - 2003, only 2.0 - 2002. I need to be on Service Pack 3.0 in order to communicate with my new ATT smartphone and that is how this was discovered. The tech there and I found a blog saying the problem of above was due to me running Internet Explorer 8.0 and that the effective cure was to remove the version and be on 6.0. I did all that so far and again same error message. I know Windows XP will be out of service next year, but I don't have the $$$ to spare buying all new software now. Any answer to this would be gold to me. I can't believe this issue it is so crazy. Do I need to get a 2003 Windows XP professional to replace the 2002? Doing that seems stupid because in 11 months none of it will be supported. What do I get now? Windows VISTA, 7? 8? 9? etc. all these revisions are making my head spin. I am just seeking some reliabiliy. My system frequently hangs up on this operating system. I am very tempted to just get rid of all of it and buy an Apple MAC to be on a closed architecture system vs. open here on Windows/ PC (IBM - based Clone). Do I have a chance getting to Service Pack 3.0 level? Thank you again. View this thread
