I have windows 7 on my laptop. When I try to open the windows update program from list of programs or anywhere. I click on it when it open the screen is blank. In order to close the program I have to alt/ctrl/del, and open task manager and close the program that way. I am unable to check anything or update. View this thread

Dell 1555, 4 GB Ram, Core 2Duo, T6600, 2.2 Ghz I recently upgraded to Windows 8 (From windows 7). The system is Dell 1555, 64 bit with all necessary hardware ( Since it was checked already, online, that it is compatible for upgrade). My problem is that Apps are not working, e.g. I start marketplace/maps/weather/ or IE, the app starts, shows the colored screen and in a second all things roll back to windows 8 home screen. The app displays in Left plane that it is open, but nothing happens ! Also system crashes on starting SKYPE. What is the probable cause ? View this thread

How do I inform Microsoft, Inc., (MS) of a Security Issue? This morning (02/09/2013), I received a land-line unsolicited phone call from a man w/ an (Asian) Indian accent, who informed me that he was an MS employee. He informed me, "MS" had learned that my computer had been running slowly of late & that he would like to show me what I could do to speed it up (by correcting some MS software problem, he implied). He asked me if I was @ my computer. I was not, so the man asked me to log in, which I did. He then told me to activate the START button & start typing in the SEARCH box. He said to first type "RUN," which I did. He then told me to next type "ENTER." At this point I insisted that he tell me what I was expected to type after I typed ENTER. I did not type ENTER in the SEARCH box after RUN. He said somthing to the effect, "Never mind, I'm going to show you what it is you need to know. I insisted on him telling me what he was instructing me to type before I typed anything more, & he kept insisting that I just keep typing, as he was showing me something important. There was some back-&-forth between us before I told him that he was "Full of S__t!," & hung up on him. Looks like phishing to me & that "Mr. MS Employee" was out to damage my computer so he could then make $$$$ by "selling" me something to fix the problem he caused. It is well-known to telephone solicitors that I am a so-called "Senior Citizen." I am, to some degree, "computer literate," but I know many other Seniors, who are not. I believe many Seniors would fall for this scam, & MS would be blamed for all their troubles. I think MS needs to know what is being done to ruin their good name! How can I contact Microsoft to give them a "heads up"? PS: I was at my home in Orlando, Florida when I received the "phone-phish." View this thread

I checked if .NET Framework 1.1 SP.1 is installed and found in Add/Remove Programs only .NET Framework 1.1 exists. Then tryed to install NDP 1.1 sp1-KB867460-X86.exe but repeatedly got the same message „SLE.tmp has encountered a problem and need to close”. Presuming the problem is .NET Framework 1.1 installation, I tryed to remove it. I did not achieved that and got the message : „Windows Installer. The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.” Has anyone a clou what is about ? Thank you. Constantin. View this thread

I have a 3 month old Dell XPS desktop that was pre-installed with Windows 8. Two weeks ago I upgraded to W8 Pro with Media Centre. I manually set restore points when I make changes. Today, the PC failed to start correctly. I checked and found that there had been a MS critical update, and yes there was a restore point with two of my points from a few days ago. Therefore I decided to restore to yesterday. It took almost three hours ( with the HD light full on ) to restore one day. It finally said it had restored to yesterday, but all of the restore points had been deleted, and the problems are still there. Questions, please: What was it doing for three hours restoring one critical update? Why has it deleted all of my restore points? Problems were: wlcomm.exe has stopped working. Windows Live Mail started but would not let me open any emails Thanks View this thread

Since November I have had an 'Important' Update stuck in the queue. after checking its the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761465) that seems to be causing the problems. Every time I switch off the P.C it informs me that it is preforming 1 of 1 updates which I leave to run. but it is still trying up to 24hrs later. I have tried updating manually through the control panel but that also fails. I have followed the advice in the FixIt box and searched the problem on the net and tried lots of fixes but nothing is working. Very frustrating as I dont even use IE9 and have to essentially crash my PC every time I need to turn it off. Any help would be great. View this thread
