I am running XP and Microsoft Security Essentials. I ran a full scan from my admin account a few hours ago, but when I sign in to my normal account, it says I am unprotected as I "haven't run a scan in a while", even though the MSE home page lists the last scan as just a few hours ago. I have noticed a few other odd behaviors (such as real-time protection turning itself off on one occasion). Do I have a problem? View this thread

I was online and an alert came up from Microsoft Security Essentials that a severe threat had been detected. I clicked on my security icon and it was spinning/searching. When it stopped, I clicked on the scan history and it said that the malware could not be located but the result said that the threat had been removed. Do I need to worry that something has infected my computer and is floating around in there somewhere? View this thread

Got a phone call from a man claiming to be with Microsoft Live. Said a problem report from my computer to Microsoft showed that I had a trojan virus and they wanted me to allow them to do a live fix. This sounds bogus to me, but gave me the number 315/277-9899 to call to verify and said to look under Windows Live Support to verify them. It sounds Fishy, and they keep calling. I have Norton Anti-Virus on my system and thought that would catch any trojan viruses, but had one a couple of years ago that actually deleted Norton from my programs. It was months before I caught that it wasn't updating and went and looked and Norton had been uninstalled from my system. So I am kind of paranoid that Norton might not catch everything. When I turned on my computer today, the MSE icon was displaying orange. I opened MSE and was advised my computer may be at risk. It then told me that "You haven't done a Full scan lately" (or something like that) and advised that I do one. Then I noticed that the weekly scan had been completed yesterday morning as scheduled. Just to be safe, I ran another scan today, just to check if something had snuck in last night when I was online. Today's scan was clean and the icon displayed green. Why does the orange icon appear when it's obviously been scanned? View this thread

I tried deleting the intrusive Norton utilities (after being unable to come up with the right password on my new computer) but Control Panel is unable to do the removal of most of Norton. How can I remove Norton so I can go to another security software? I have Windows 8 on a Toshiba laptop and Norton came already installed. View this thread

I was shutting down my laptop (Sony Vaio, if that's relevant) and along with the shut down, I believe Windows did a few updates. When I tried to turn on my laptop the next day, it kept telling me that it failed to configure certain updates and needed to restart. I restarted my laptop probably 4 or 5 times, and still, no progress. One of the options it showed me was to refresh Windows 8..I did NOT know this meant deleting a bunch of my programs, including the expensive: Microsoft Office Home and Student. My track pad doesn't work properly. I can't scroll by sliding down the right side of the track pad. The audio on my laptop has also changed. I have no idea why. Also, a lot of the Vaio care programs that came with the laptop are gone. Is there any way for me to recover all of the "Apps removed while refreshing" my PC? If it helps, I did update to Windows 8 from Windows 7 just a few weeks ago. Any help would be much appreciated! View this thread

instead of text my windows update screen will show me a reference #ExampleReference#. I clicked the blank button with no text on it (the download updates/install updates). Now my whole update screen is blank other than the windows update icon, the progress bar, the control panel location and the left link references. View this thread

I upgraded my Windows 7 into Windows 8 recently. Now my windows update is not working suddenly from yesterday. It was working fine and installing all drivers, windows updates and Microsoft updates automatically without any problem. Now it's showing it is only set to windows updates and not any other microsoft product updates and asks me to install that service from their site. It directs me to a site from where I can install Microsoft update feature. I did that several times by now. But it seems it's not working and showing the same message, "Get updates for other Microsoft products. Find out more." And update history shows I never installed any updates. And update is not working as well. If I click 'check for updates', the update window freezes for several minutes, and then started to work again, check for several minutes and always show error. What is the problem? I tried troubleshooting several time. It always shows problems are fixed. Should I refresh or reset the PC to solve this problem? If so, should I need to create a recovery partition first? I upgraded to windows 8 from windows 7 a month ago. I didn't create a recovery partition. My PC had a recovery partition created by the OEM when I bought it. My question is what happened to the already existing recovery partition when I upgraded? Was it upgraded to windows 8 as well? I created backup to an external hard drive 2 days ago. Now if I restart or refresh my PC, will I be needing windows in a disk or drive? I don't have one since I upgraded using online upgrade (upgrade assistant). I can't afford to buy new windows if all gone when resetting or refreshing a PC. I am a student and my family can't afford to buy new PC or windows. I upgraded using the offer which is affordable. Considering all these facts, please give me a solution. I want my windows upgrade tool to work again, not only for windows updates, but for other microsoft updates as well. Also I need the information on the recovery thing. Thank you. View this thread

I have Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. A few days ago Update KB2761494 tried to install. It has tried unsuccessfully 6 times. It gets to the configuration stage when I restart the computer, and makes it to Step 3 of the configuration stage, but then tells me the installation failed and the changes are reverting. I have Norton Security on my computer. Does anyone know what the problem is? View this thread

Windows Update for Windows 8 Pro does not work for my PC. I keep getting Failure Configuring Windows Updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer. When checking my update history, the log shows that no updates have occurred for my PC. I have Windows Update turned on to automatically accept updates. Why is it that Microsoft Security Essentials states I haven't ran a scan in awhile, when infact I have. Routinely, I will conduct an update and then run a full scan. The next day, the silly icon is yellow and the note states I haven't ran a scan in awile. What is up with that picture? Maybe my question is best answered by the release of what is supossed to be the "latest" and "greatest" verision of windows...Window 8. With this I mean, Microsoft Security Essentials is not compatible with Windows 8. Well huh...maybe the people at microsoft realized their product is less than, shall we say, worth having. Afterall, why create a progarm, have updates for it (which seemes like every hour), label it as "this or that", and then make it where it is not compatible with with their newest windows verision release? I installed the Bing Desktop v1.1 tonight. It took almost forever. When I was shutting down for the night, I found I can't get rid of the Bing Bar or the window that its in. I tried to uninstall program, but keep getting a message that I have to wait until the program is finished installing. I don't know what else to try. I entered the code 8oo870539 into Fixit and their operation said it had repaired the matter. I again requested Windows to install updates - it went through the process of downloading them but failed to Install. I have a laptop that stays at my mom's in OH so I can use when I visit from CA. It is rarely being used. The Windows it runs on is XP 2002 version under windows 32. Service Pack 2. I couldn't open a needed file from my email because it needed to be updated, so I updated to Service Pack 3. When I did, I was abel to open the file I needed, but everything I print off this computer - prints mirror image. How can I fix this? View this thread
