When I move my mouse across the screen and it passes over a desktop icon; and I accidently hold down the right or left button while passing over an icon, that icon is moved from the then current position to another postion that is determined by when I am no longer holding down the button. What I would really like is that selection and highlighting of an icon would only be accomplished when I specifically right or left click when over the object. Then to move the icon I would have to right or left click the highlighted icon View the thread

I bought a new external hard drive and pulled 2 folders onto it. Then I went back to one folder and deleted it off of my laptop. I have Windows 7 with the "Libraries" When I hit delete it wiped out the pictures folder from the libraries I panicked, but then found them when I went to Documents, My Documents, and My Pictures. I was relieved. Then I highlighted the 2nd folder and hit delete and it wiped out my entire pictures folder. It was GONE…along with my Photo Stream! I KNOW I only had the one folder highlighted both times. I have also been getting ads popping up and have to wonder if the problem started with the external hard drive. View the thread

When my Windows Vista Hotmail account was changed to Outlook, I have been unable to print an email showing just the text of the email. Every print option I use shows the Inbox contents and the other columns on the screen. The email text is squeezed and stacked into a small column on the page. The only way I can print just the email text is to Copy it, Paste it into a Word file, and print the Word file. Please tell me how to print only the email text without leaving Outlook. Com. I received a call from Aishaz Tech informing me I had the "csrss.exe virus" and they could fix the problem for me for £100, which is the cost of the "Microsoft Tools" required to fix the problem. They said I would not be able to fix it myself, neither would anyone else who did no have these tools and that they are a partner of Microsoft. I run MS Windows 7 Home Preimium. I had not even noticed I had a problem. There is only one version of crss.exe in the task manager running (although I can't open its file location) and I have had no other problems such as unexpected pop up windows that other people having this virus complain of. How do I know it is not just a scam to get £100 from me?How do I know I even have the virus? How do they know I have the virus and where did they get my telephone number from?Is it also true that not even reformatting the HDD and reinstalling all the software from scratch can fix the problem? They asked me to use "Teamviewer" a free software to allow them to take over my screen, showing me the "proof" that I had the csrss.exe virus by: 1) running msconfig and showing me that many of the Microsoft services in the Service tab had the status "stopped". They told me all Microsoft services in the Service tab are essential and should always be running - is this true?2) they ran regedit and viewd under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE the SECURITY folder, for which the Data column said (value not set) and told me this meant my anti-virus was not running (I use AVG Free which says it is running and certainly seems to be scanning all incoming emails). Does anyone know what the Data column should have entered in it?3) they then looked at something called prefetch, showed me loads of entries with numbers and no recognisable file or programme names which they said contained the virus.4) in DOS they ran some tree, which sent loads of country names and other information too fast to read up the screen, followed by a sentence saying your anti virus software is out of date or not working and urgently needs to be updated. But I keep my AVG Anti-virus software updated automatically.I don't know what to do and am really worried about what they might have been able to do with my computer whilst they took it over online. Anyone have any good suggestions please? View the thread

Window 7. Whenever I shut down the pc there are always programmes that need to be closed manually or the pc will not close down and just goes to sleep. Before, when I was closing the PC programmes such as Skype or Outlook where automatically close. Now I have an overlay telling me that those programmes are still running and asking if I am sure I want to shut them down. I don't get why! Of course it would be different if it was a programme where I need to save some doc, but why Skype or Outlook? Is there any setting I can change to make sure Windows forces close all the programmes? thank you! View the thread

HP will not help unless I pay them for their service. All of the files are wmi and I am using WIN 7. I tried the HP recovery manager but it says it " stopped working" alas no help from HP tech support. I am just above a novice so any help really needs to be explained thorougly. View the thread

Hello. when trying to copy files to a DVD disc i keep getting the following error message " This DVD-ROM drive is read only. You can copy files to this writable DVD but you must insert it into a writable drive" .The drive IS writable and this message has only just appeared for no apparent reason .Sometimes files are partially copied then i get this message and sometimes the message appears without attempting to copy files at all but i am told that files are waiting to be written to a disc. I have tried uninstalling and re installing the drive and shutting off the computer and restarting it but nothing will cure the problem.Searches on the internet show that other people are having exactly the same problem but there seems to be no solution.Any body have any ideas?.The only other information i can give is that i have a ACER EXTENSA 5235 running WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64bit. Any help or advice will be appreciated.Thank you. View the thread

My husband's Vista computer does not recognize an installed HP1020 printer. Control Panel shows it installed, but the "print" function won't select the printer, it keeps asking for us to choose a printer. There is only one user, NO NETWORK, one printer installed, and he can't print anything! He particularly needs to print things from the Internet (research, etc.). HELP! Kim View this thread

Today is April first. At work my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop claims that the time right now is 2142 UTC, but it is NOT, it really is 2042 UTC. As a consequence, my local time is ahead by an hour - it claims it is 1442 Pacific Daylight Time, but it is really 1342. Yes, this has something to do with daaylight savings time, but I've got everything correct. The problem appears to be that over the past weekend the British Isles went onto British Summer Time - and the Windows 7 clock utilities are mistakenly pushing UTC forward by an hour. I have tried various time servers and the result is always the same - UTC is off by an hour. This just seems impossible to me - how could M$ screwup something like this? View the thread

windows vista UAC on system denies all access
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
I turned my uac on because I had a virus last week that changed a bunch of my permissions. I now cannot access anything on my hard drive, it says I am denied access, but can also not turn off the uac again. I also tried to restore to an earlier date, it would not allow that. Any advice? Windows vista system. View this thread -

I have a 32 bit Windows XP box that I just built. Our company orders our workstations with two drives, one SSD and the other a traditional platter drive. The SSD is only 120 gig, so I want all future accounts to have their My Documents folder created on the D: drive. How do I make it so that whenever a user account is created, My Documents is placed on the D: without having to move it manually after each account creation? View this thread

I'm looking for detailed information about the final steps of installation and configuration that typically occur the first time Office programs are run. In particular, I'd like to know how Word and Outlook determine whether or not they should run this process; in my case they run it every time I start them. I previously asked a similar question in the Office 2013 IT Pro general forum, which remains unanswered. I did get some advice, but essentially the only thing that was relevant was to uninstall and reinstall, which I have done several times: now Excel and OneNote start properly, but Word and Outlook have to run through an extensive process. I have also looked through numerous other forums and followed advice given for similar problems that happened in this and previous releases of Office; it seems particularly prevalent in Word.
