I just downloaded Microsoft Office 2010 Professional then powered down the computer with an XP operating system. Once I turned the computer on I got the following message: Windows couldn't start because the following file is missing or corrupt; System32DriversNtfs.sys You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-Rom Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. Next, I started the computer with the Original Setup CD and hit 'r' as instructed. Then I got this message: 1: C:WINDOWS Which Windows installation would you like to log into? (to Cancel, press Enter) What do I put here? View this thread

I have tried several times to install SP1 for vista on my laptop. When the download is through the message says it was installed successfully. However when updates come back up SP1 is still there and it still says I'm running vista home premium without the SP1 being displayed in the windows edition when I right click on computer and check properties. Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on and how I can fix it. I have downloaded and installed all other updates including recommended and optional. I would like to upgrade to windows 7 but I can't until SP1 is installed. View this thread

I found the following on the web to make the Desktop Icons go away (make them transparent rather). However, it created a new problem; black squares after turning on the laptop the next day. The black squares did not show up on every single Desktop Icon, however, it was quite a few of them. I was able to get rid of the black squares by reversing what was created in the registry keys; but of course the arrows are back. Which I do not want. Here was the instructions for WINDOWS 7 Home Premium 64 bit: (this is what I am running on my laptop) 1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.2. In regedit, navigate to the location below:NOTE: If Shell Icons it is not in the left pane under Explorer, right click on Explorer, and click on New and Key. Type Shell Icons for the new keys's name, and press Enter. Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Icons 3. In the right pane of Shell Icons, right click on an empty area, and click/tap on New and String Value, and name it 29.4. Double click/tap on the 29 sting value to modify it. 5. Type in the full path of the custom .ico file within quotes, OR copy and paste the path below for what overlay icon you would like to use, and click/tap on OK. (Transparent) %windir%System32shell32.dll,50 (Small Arrow) %windir%System32shell32.dll,29 (Large Arrow) %windir%System32imageres.dll,154 6. Log off and on, or restart the computer to apply. Question(s): 1. Can anyone please help explain as to why the black squares? 2. is there a solution to getting rid of the Shortcut Arrow on the Desktop Icons without creating the black square problem? View the thread

Win 7 on our notebook started running really slow the other day. A day later we start getting calls to the house, one of which I answered and was told that our Genuine Windows 7 has been hijacked and is running in two cities in Canada. Always suspicious about things Internet like this, I didn't believe the caller and told him so. Now I'm concerned and need to contact Microsoft directly to have this verified ...or not? I have 2 questions; my intent isn't meant to denigrate others products, but to possibly be educated by the people in this forum concerning others products. One very highly recommended computer Tune-up program, one recommended by Dell, PC Magazine (editors choice) ZD Net (editors choice), CNet (top product), USA Today, and others, that supposedly not only cleans your registry of what they call junk, also defrags the registry at the next boot. It claims to fix hard drive errors, optimize memory, optimize your networking, or Internet Connection, and a host of other Oh wow! Gee-wiz stuff. Long story short, I had to reinstall my Operating System clean to repair what this, in my opinion, horrible product 'fixed,' Programs, mainstream relevant programs, no longer worked. My Internet connection was severely changed, and not for the better, and a host of other problems that were caused by, and directly related to using this program. I know, ever since DOS was the only O.S. available, yes, I've just dated myself, the accepted consensus was 'never ever, never ever-ever touch the registry.' So, question 1- Still true today? Or is there a product that will do this safely? Now I've run across another product; an uninstaller, PerfectUninstaller to be exact, that claims to remove ALL the orphaned files left over from using Add/Remove for a program uninstalled using Windows Control Panel. In doing this, unless I'm misinformed, it claims to clean the registry also. My gut feeling is to run away quickly, far away, from this program too...Question 2- others opinions? Thanks! (this site rawks!) View the thread

windows vista Printer Not Recognised By PC
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
I've recently bought a HP 1050A all in one printer. Programme loads ok from install disc but, whilst scan and copy work fine, printer will not respond to the print command from Word, Notepad etc. I've tried uninstalling and downloading software from the HP web site but with the same result. O.S. Vista Home Basic. View this thread -
Every attempt to install software, upgrades and everything to be installed has failed for weeks now. I haven't even been able to install Acronis True Image 2013 so I can do good backups. Regardless of the program I get error codes and messages saying "failed." I've explored every imaginable fix: sfc /scannow, chkdsk/r, Windows Installer, site support, etc. This is by far the worst experience I've had in all my years of computing. A clean Windows install is so daunting, but if that's what I need to do, OK. I'll be so thankful to any help ideas you all may have. The frustration level is literally making a nervous wreck of me. ellen View the thread
