I have an XP with SP3 abloard. This morning, the computer failed to boot up correctly (although the initial sections of the boot sequence appeared briefly), and showed the following cryptic message : "The system could not be restarted from its previous location because the restoration image is corrupt. Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" I have no idea what this means or how to get the computer to respond either before or after this black screen message. 'Tis a puzzlement. The security update KB2686509 will not install and the Microsoft "Fix it" program does not work for it. I don't understand all of this faulty keyboard jargon. Do I need to contact someone in tech support and will they charge me? Is there a way to simply ignore this update and tell Microsoft to stop trying to install it? When I try to search for an application installed on my PC, (by pressing the search charm on the start screen or pressing Windows+Q on the desktop), on the top of the search box appears a message indicating that "search is not possible in this application". If I write some text in the search box (like 'calc', for example), no application is found. Also, if on the desktop I press Windows+X and select "Search", nothing happens. (Update -- Actually, someting happens, a new Windows explorer process is launched each time I select the "search" option. I end up with many of those processes in the task manager list, apparently doing nothing) But if I use the search feature inside the Windows Store, it seems to work correctly. Only fails when I try to search programs in my PC. I don´t know if this is happening recently or days ago. Any tips? View the full article

The link to mini dump and memory dump is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qp3e1egtojksa6p/memory%20dmp%20and%20minidump.rar Below is additional info: I upgraded my old GPU, MB and PSU about 6 months ago but since then I keep getting occasional crashes and bsod (usually while playing games and watching videos). crashes usually end with the buzzing sound while the screen shows some plain basic colour screen or sometimes even distorted lines, but sometimes gets normal bsod. when it manage to show normal bsod, the message i see most is "IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL" These two events may or may not be related to crashes but it may help u to troubleshoot: 1) (happen twice) as soon as it crash with buzzing sound, I hard-reset PC and while waiting, i grab my ipad to play around. But I notice that my iPAD doesn't automatically connect to my WIFI. (normally it does). when I try manually, it fail for a few times before it can connect. doesn't happen other times. 2) (once, today) i was chatting in game (dota 2) and as soon as i press "enter" it crashes. System spec: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. I am using with a trial copy of Xbase and was working with thier FORM DESIGNER, when in the middle of that Kaspersky started an update in background and on completion did an autoreboot. When I restarted the FORM DESIGNER it went to the taskbar and will not maximize. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Xbase but to no avail. Is there anything I can do short of reloading windows??? My Windows 8 is configured for French Swiss. The decimal symbol is "comma" (like in French France) but it must be a "dot" In the same way, the decimal charactor in the touch keyboard is also "comma" and not "dot" View the full article

I have Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed separately on two different hard disks. Each OS is unaware of the presence of the other. Booting with each OS, I removed the hard drive letter assigned to the disk that contains the other OS. For example, when I boot using Windows 7, I do not see the drive containing Windows 8 and vice-versa. I believe I cannot use the CHKNTFS /X option to exclude one OS from checking the disk containing the other OS at the time of start-up as the drive containing the other OS does not have an assigned drive letter; i.e. it is hidden. I do not want Windows 8 checking Windows 7 disk at the time of booting for errors. The same expectation holds true when I boot using Windows 7 (no check for errors on disk containing Windows 8). In this set-up, can CHKDSK run at the time of start-up on drives that do not have an assigned drive letter? If yes, how can I disable it? View the full article

Hi All, I had an old Dell Dimension that died, which was running XP Home; so I removed the old hard drive and installed it as a "slave" drive in a second Dell Dimension running XP Pro. The XP Pro system recognized and installed the old XP Home hard drive as a slave without any problems. I can see a wide variety of directories and files on the slave drive (even Windows and Program directories); however, I can't see the "Documents and Settings" from the old system. And of course, that is where all the data I want to access resides. When I look at both drives under "my computer" (XP Pro System), the drive(s) "total size" and "free space" looks correct; so, it appears the data is there. I just can't get to it.
