I have moved to Windows 8 from XP where "on startup" tasks worked fine. In Windows 8 I can't for the life of me get one to run. I add it through the UI and have Enable Tasks History set, but it never runs and there are no errors in the Event Log. The task is (for now) just to run a test .bat script, and is defined as: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> <Task version="1.4" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2004/02/mit/task"> <RegistrationInfo> <Date>2013-01-05T11:04:13.4996188</Date> <Author>JCPR-Dell-3peter</Author> </RegistrationInfo> <Triggers> <BootTrigger> <Enabled>true</Enabled> <Delay>PT10S</Delay> </BootTrigger> </Triggers> <Principals> <Principal id="Author"> <RunLevel>HighestAvailable</RunLevel> <UserId>S-1-5-18</UserId> </Principal> </Principals> <Settings> <MultipleInstancesPolicy>IgnoreNew</MultipleInstancesPolicy> <DisallowStartIfOnBatteries>true</DisallowStartIfOnBatteries> <StopIfGoingOnBatteries>true</StopIfGoingOnBatteries> <AllowHardTerminate>true</AllowHardTerminate> <StartWhenAvailable>false</StartWhenAvailable> <RunOnlyIfNetworkAvailable>false</RunOnlyIfNetworkAvailable> <IdleSettings> <StopOnIdleEnd>true</StopOnIdleEnd> <RestartOnIdle>false</RestartOnIdle> </IdleSettings> <AllowStartOnDemand>true</AllowStartOnDemand> <Enabled>true</Enabled> <Hidden>false</Hidden> <RunOnlyIfIdle>false</RunOnlyIfIdle> <DisallowStartOnRemoteAppSession>false</DisallowStartOnRemoteAppSession> <UseUnifiedSchedulingEngine>false</UseUnifiedSchedulingEngine> <WakeToRun>false</WakeToRun> <ExecutionTimeLimit>P3D</ExecutionTimeLimit> <Priority>7</Priority> </Settings> <Actions Context="Author"> <Exec> <Command>cmd</Command> <Arguments>/c E:utilscy-test.bat arg1 arg2</Arguments> </Exec> </Actions> </Task> The scheduler task is running (other tasks run and show history). I have tried without and with the "<Delay>PT10S</Delay>". What on earth is (not) going on? View the full article

I'm very close to abandoning windows OS. It doesn't make sense to me that with browser and email I'm able to use iphone, firefox but with windows I have issues with common everyday features not working, hanging programs, updates not working, reinstalling software over and over again, etc. I spend more time trouble shooting and looking for solutions than actually using my devices. It's not right. View the full article

I am attempting to install Windows XP on a recently wiped drive as an upgrade on my HP-Compaq nc6400. (Full Specs- http://www.cnet.com/laptops/hp-compaq-nc6400-core/4507-3121_7-31851193.html ) My primary issue is that XP cannot detect any hard drives. I've checked them over; the format is correct, I've run HDD diagnostics via 3rd pary and start-up screen, but none of that is working. I've even tried new hard drives (none have a 'C' drive), but to no avail. I can get Linux [better than nothing?] to install, so is it that further confounds things. So the, my question is: How does one assign a 'C' letter to a hard drive? I can't do it through any other Windows computer because it already has a 'C' drive. Any solutions? If further details are required, please do not hesitate to ask (note the link has all the system specs). View this thread

I used to be able to put the computer into hibernate mode when I wasn't using it. Somehow I've lost that option and now only have Sleep or Shut Down. How can I get it back. I think I lost it when I did a clean up to increase my available free space on C drive. View this thread

W8 continues doing great: http://www.dividend.com/news/2013/argus-downgrades-mircosoft-msft/ ---- Argus reported on Friday that they have lowered their rating for software company, Microsoft Corporation(MSFT). The firm has downgraded MSFT from a “Buy” to a “Hold,” due to a lack of sales of Windows 8. ---- http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2013/01/04/microsoft-argus-cuts-to-hold-windows-8-well-behind-win-7-adoption-curve/ Quote: Argus Research‘s Joseph Bonner today cut his rating on shares of Microsoft (MSFT) to Hold from Buy, writing that “Early data indicate that Windows 8 may not be selling particularly well and that mass adoption will likely take longer than initially expected.” Quote: While we expected the adoption of Windows 8 to build slowly, without an “Apple-like” blockbuster debut, it currently appears that Windows 8 has had no impact on consumers’ migration to non-Windows tablet devices and has done little to boost PC sales. PC makers Fujitsu and Acer have both pointed to weak sales of Windows 8 devices. Fujitsu has said that it will miss its fiscal year target for PC shipments by one million units, and has lowered its unit shipment forecast to 6 million from 7 million. Meanwhile, Acer management has commented that the Windows 8 touch-screen interface may be scaring off consumers. Industry tracker NPD Group recently reported that sales of Windows devices fell 21% year-over-year in the month following the release of Windows 8, and that sales of notebook PCs fell 24% during this period. NPD also noted that Windows 8 accounted for 58% of Windows device sales versus 83% for Windows 7 at the same time in its release cycle. In addition, although the new Surface tablet is clearly a showcase for the company’s technology, disappointing sales could tarnish this first foray into tablet computing. The Surface Pro, with full MS Office compatibility, is scheduled to be released in January. However, even with full Office functionality, the base model price of $899, compared to $399 for an iPad 2, could give some customers pause. Windows 8 has several innovative features and has generally received positive reviews. However, the acid test is consumer adoption, which is likely to take longer than we initially expected. Oh well, this article has one failure: The reviews were actually for the most part just average. Especially sad that all of this is actually fixable. A bit more honest marketing and a bit more options in the software itself about which GUI you prefer and everything would be far smoother and with far less drama. Yet they insist on playing this ego game for no good reason. View the full article

Hello I have HP brand new DV6-6247 and after backing up everything and installing few programs that I need, like VMware, ... Office, blah blah blah, I restart to install Windows updATES and it has been stuck With restarting message on screen now for over 2 hours. I thought it was updating, but no it is just trying to restart but it cant, and i have read many people with this problem. well if there is no fix for this, I will happily go back to windows 7 Ultimate, since I only have windows 8 basic edition and i need to connect to domain. Since Microsoft doesn't want to give a good deal (on Pro) to those who bought new windows 8 computers, i tried to upgrade they want 69.99 come on guys, if the computer came with windows 7 it would be 15, I really don't appreciate paying more for something than if I would have just told HP to give me the computer with windows 7 on it. I didn't even think about this, I thought I would be able to get the 15$ upgrade offer. Well I just tried to hard reboot and now it wont boot up, boots to black screen.. Oh man, this is not going to be fun. Help just somebody who knows someone over there at Microsoft Updates, please try to issue aN UPDATE that will solve this neverending restarting problem please. When I receive an attachment to an email (using Zimbra Imail, Firefox, Windows XP Pro) and I click it and select "Download", I get the "Enter name of file to save to..." dialog box (because I already set the option to "Always ask me where to save files." But the file display always defaults to a "List". At least recently. I don't recall it always doing that. In any case, I want it to default to a "Details" display, in ascending order, as I can then find things sooo much faster that way. (I often use the "Date Modified" tab to bring to the top the most recent version of a file.) I know that I can go to the "View Menu" icon and select "Details", but each time I go into a sub folder while in this dialog box, I have to do that all over again and it wastes a lot of time and attention. I did some internet searches but didn't find a way to fix this. View this thread

I have been puzzled by this since XP days and did not have the time to pursue it. Perhaps now is the time. I have 8GB, Task Manager Processes tab shows "89% Memory". I guess that means 89% of physical memory utilized as the Performance tab says 7/7.9GB (89%). One of the processes, Chrome 32bit is shown as taking up 902MB. I exited Chrome. All the Chrome processes disappeared from Task Manager. However, Task Manager shows 86% memory utilized. I was expecting a decrease of about 12% (1GB out of 8GB). I did nothing and waited for 10 minutes. There was no improvement. The numbers do not add up. Are the numbers supposed to mean something meaningful? If they are real, how do I get back my memory? Thanks. View the full article

I am trying to get a dual monitor setup with touch screen. Problem is only the primary screen will accept touch commands, and the secondary screen passes touch commands to the primary screen. Apparently the fix is to go to Control Panel and calibrate the screens via the "Tablet" setting - problem for me is that I can't find the "Tablet" setting anywhere. The only setting that apears if I do a search for Tablet is the "Pen and Touch" setting. View the full article
