I suppose that in part, because I really want the start button to be back on Windows 8 that I am posing this question, but I see a feature here that would be nice and would satisfy me such that I would no longer care about a Start button. I've always liked the taskbar more than the start button but it is missing my favorite feature that was in the Start Menu. And maybe it isn't and that's what this question is about? How do I add an icon to the taskbar that will pull up a drop down of all the Microsoft Office tools (as opposed to putting each one on the taskbar)? R, J View the full article

I was playing Easter Solitaire when my XP screen turned blue with the notice a serious error had occurred. One remedy suggested was removing any software recently installed which was AVG Linkscanner and then use Systems Restore which I tried using two different dates both of which brought the response that Systems Restore could not restore to either date. What would prevent Systems Restore from working? View this thread

I have Windows Vista Home Premium & use the Media Centre regularly. The Guide tells me I have only 3 days left & asks me to download updates which I do. This makes no difference & it still only updates to 1/1/2013. Have set up guide listings again but still no success. On the "About Guide Listings" page I note it quotes a start date of 1/1/01 & an end date of 1/1/2013. The EPG Version is quoted as 3.00 As a separate & continuing issue I find that Channel 5, although listed, does not give any data in the guide but I can still record from this channel using the add recording facility. Can anyone help please View this thread

Hi, Have been trying to get an answer to this issue for a couple of months now with no success......hope somebody can point me in the right direction!! The text of my previous (unanswered) post is here at http:// social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprogenerl/thread/889d81b9-86bf-4c84-ad5f-21d852512636/#889d81b9-86bf-4c84-ad5f-21d852512636 this outlines the situation as I understand it! As far as I can tell, the issue has only arisen because of the non standard profile. In earlier versions of Windows paths could easily be reassigned through registry to restore any missing links arising from their default paths. In Windows 8 the addition of the modern UI Apps introduces a new variable for which I have so far been unable to get any information upon their association with registry default paths (if any) and just how they interact with each User Profile. If I had some idea of how to make the UI Apps recognise the non standard profile path (i.e. D:User) I might be able to restore functionality...... In short I wish to achieve the following: 1. Retain the (Primary) user profile location of D:User (NB. NOT C:UsersUser OR D:UsersUser) 2. Sign into Windows 8 with a 'Local' Account 3. Enjoy full functionality of the Metro Apps......especially the Windows Store :) 4. Sign In to the Store FROM my 'Local' Account submitting my 'MS Account' ONLY as and when required to actually 'Sign In' to the Store 5. Keep other (Secondary) user profiles located in D:UsersOthers NOT C:UsersOthers I hope this makes sense and would appreciate any responses which can either suggest a solution or at least explain how the UI Apps interface with the user profile paths so that I can investigate further why this is now working as it should. Many thanks in advance, PC Pilot View the full article

Hi My PC (which is only 5 days old) has had some issues since I first booted it up. It likes to either lock up or completely shut down and restart on its own. It does this at random times, never when I am actively making inputs (like say during a game) but it shut down when I was watching a 6 minute YouTube video. My drivers for my GTX 680 are up to date (310.70), and my Gigabyte X79-UP4 board has its Audio, Chipset, LAN, and USB drivers updated. I have install every update on Windows 8 to date. I also ran tests on my HDD and RAM and those tests showed nothing bad. I don't know what to do to fix this except try to downgrade to Windows 7. If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it, and I'll add additional details as necessary. My specs are: Intel Core i7-3820 Quad-core 3.60GHz Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 2GB Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR3 RAM 2TB SATA-III 6GB/s HDD GIGABYTE X79-UP4 Intel X79 Chipset Quad Channel DDR3 ATX Mainboard View the full article

kepp getting low disc space pop uo in windows vista View this thread -
Look at 2009 [/b](that's before Windows Phone 7). It has live tiles! You click on them them and they expand to full screen. All the other "applications" apparently still run when that happens. The design, look and feel of the UI is very metrofy, too. For example: There is no search box, yet the GUI is searchable (notice the popping up letters) Screenshot: (you should see the [url=" video though to notice the live-tile aspect) %5Burl= View the full article

Original Title - update problem After the last up dates when I start my PC the screen shows something about the BIOS and I have to hit F1 to continue. This never happened starting the PC until the last update. Also since then the calendar keeps jumping back to 2006 when I start the PC. Does the update have anything to do with this or is there another problem? View this thread

windows 8 Windows 8 \ Security changes....?
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
I'm curious: has Win 8Server 2012 "tightened" security over Win 7? If so, is there an article describing this? edm2 P.S I was looking for an Antivirus solution for Win Server 2012 and ran across this insightful pdf (Win 8) http://www.avira.com/files/support/EN/Avira_W8_2_EN.pdf They show the results of running the Win Upgrade Assistant (several common apps failed) and talk about Microsoft redoing APIs which causes developers headaches. I suspect that despite the very similar looking Win 8 Desktop (similar to Win 7) that there may be some deeper architectural changes that aren't so evident. View the full article -

I am running a 2009 Dell XPS ONE 2010 with Vista Home Premium SP2. About two years back, I noticed that Windows Installer had quit working and I could not install Microsoft programs or uninstall most programs, could load 3rd party programs like Turbotax, but could not uninstall them. I purchased Microsoft Expression Web software and had to pay MS $100 to load it. MS uninstalled Office 2007, cleaned up Windows, installed Expression Web, and reinstalled Office 2007. When MS loaded Expression Web, they advised me to use Revo Uninstaller which can be forced to work. because the normal MS Program Uninstaller will not work I cannot install any MS programs such as the Windows 7 upgrade advisor or other MS software. When MS installed Expression Web, they said they could not fix the installer failure without a custom reinstall of Vista which I chose not to do. Strangely, MS Windows Updates work just fine. Over the last three months, I have read and tried all the MS suggestions to fix this problem without success. The installer failure message is "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed........." Now I want to install new web site creation software but it will not install. I purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade Home Premium package but it fails with the message my computer in not compatible with Windows 7. I suspect the upgrade fails because the Installer Service fails. I don't want to do a Custom install of Windows 7 due to the work required to reinstall all my software. All recommendations to restore the Installer Service will be appreciated, If this is not the right forum for this problem, please let me know. Thanks, Bruce in Elfin Forest. View this thread
