  1. I have just upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 and am seeing the same noise problem when I attempt to play something with the Windows Media Player. For Windows 7 someone gave a fix for the repeating noise bursts, but I don't know how to fix Windows 8. Playing from a CD or from Real Player Library does not show the noise bursts? 2. 3. The background image appears, along with the large data and time, after first booting the PC. I can select a different lock screen, and that shows up when logged on and locked. But, after signing out, all that I see is a light blue background with the date/time, and no image. This is happening on two PCs, one on a domain, the other standalone. I have tried suggestions from other forums, such as select a new lock screen from "Change PC settings" (no, that's only for the current user), and changing "Force a specific default lock screen image" with Group Policy Editor, still no image after sign out. Has anyone else experienced this? Ideas for fixing the problem? View the full article
  4. Early in December 2012 I upgraded to Windows 8 pro from Windows 7 Home on my ACER s3-951 ultrabook (i7 processor). The system ran well for about 2 weeks. On December 15th, my system automatically rebooted to get a windows update. I could hear the computer from the other room. When I returned to the PC, the metro UI was frozen and was not responsive to input. Rebooting did not fix this. Switching to the administrator account, the Metro UI appeared to work fine. After asking on various message boards, I gave up and did a system reset. I followed directions from the ACER site and installed all the Windows 8 drivers for my system. I also created a brand new account for my use. The Metro UI is working, but many of the applications are unstable or don't work. Skype started up, query me for permissions, asked for my skype ID, and then proceeded to hang. Eventually skype gets an error code. I have since reloaded the desktop version. I associated my login account with one of my Microsoft accounts. Mail would not let me add google accounts. I discovered by accident that the mail program was hanging on my windows account because it did not have an associated email account. I switched my windows account to use my live.com account and mail started working properly. Netflix is very unstable. It sometimes starts a movie, but if I click on the movie screen to adjust the volume or fast forward my location in the movie, the controls never appear and within seconds Netflix crashes. Occasionally, Netflix starts, but hides the cursor. In these occasions clicking on the screen WILL bring up the controls, but the cursor never appears. Sometimes when starting a moving, the buffer makes it to 37% and then stops. I can hear the sound, but get no video. Other Metro UI apps have equally bizarre behavior. I am about to wipe my computer using the remove and reinstall option. This will require a lot of my time. So far, I have been very unhappy with Windows 8. I expected this all to work, but instead, I am wasting a lot of time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this shy of doing a remove and reinstall? View the full article
  5. I had to reboot/recover my system on my COMPAQ Presario v6000. I was able to recover everything except:::: My Microsoft Office will not boot up unless I enter the product key. I enter the product key I have on my yellow sticker, on the back of my laptop, however, it will not accept the 25 digit code. I already had someone else verify the code and we are entering it correctly but the system will not accept it. What can i do? Microsoft Office was loaded and sold as part of the laptop by Circuit City View this thread
  6. I've been tasked with migrating a number of our users up to the Hosted Exchange services to coincide with our shift toward O365. I have an existing Exchange 2010 environment, 2008R2 AD Domain, and all the virtual infrastructure I could ever want. Now I'm looking at deploying a 2012 domain controller and a pair of adfs servers and proxies on Server 2012. The problem I'm looking for help on is the ADFS 2.1 federation with the Office 365 cloud. From what I understand (from a preliminary googling) there is a fair amount of "under the hood" changes that have to be undertaken to make it work (changing reg keys to falsely indicate the existence of powershell snapins, reverting changes after patches, lots of nastiness like that...). I'm not sure if ADFS 2.1 is the best option for us to use to step in to this O365 experience. Maybe someone who has implemented it can speak to the ease of use? Any horror stories out there, or is everyone just using ADFS 2.0? View this thread
  7. In reference to a previous answer about an eee pc and windows 7 : The eee pc I have only has a 4 GB SSD. I do not have the disk for a reinstall of XP. It takes 3.93 of the 4GB. I cannot connect to the internet, first owner left out parts of XP to make room. Should I get a new install XP disk, and upgrade to an 8G SSD. Will a retail version of XP home work? You can find them, but it has to be a new full install disk, correct? I have the old key, but a new retail will have its own new key. View the thread

Memory has to be upgraded to 1 or 2 GHz, but will it install if I change the HDD from 4GB to 8GB (Its a SSD, but XP take up 3.93 of the 4, so it has to be changed). Its 2008 machine, can I do it? It was originally Linux, but previous owner upgraded to XP SP3. Windows 7 Starter a better choice? View the thread
  11. Hello there, When I open the Weather app from the start menu it opens and shows me a message saying "You are viewving sample weather data. Please connect to the internet to see weather for your city". The same happen with all apps in the Start menu. Now if I open the IE from the taskbar in the desktop I have access to the internet however if I open the IE from the Start menu I can't access. Are them different Apps? I'm behind a firewall. I've configured the connection to Internet in the IE from the Task bar in the Desktop. Does I've to configure something else? What I'm missing? View the full article
  12. Hello, I have a question: I have Windows Firewall disabled in W8 and when I try to install APPs from the Windows Appstore I obtain an error message saying something like: "The app couldn´t be installed because Windows Firewall service is not running. Enable Windows Firewall service and try again" I have the Firewall of Windows disabled because I already have another program for this purpose (monitoring/tracking my internet connections). So, that´s why I want to keep it disabled. Does anybody know if this problem is going to be fixed and in the next future we will be able to install W8 Apps with the Firewall of Windows disabled? Thanks in advance for the info. Regards. View the full article
  13. Hi all, Has there been any progress on getting Explorer in Windows 7, 64-bit to act like the good old XP days of "single click subfolders to expand them so they open and stay put in the left pane?" I know there has been a lot of complaints about how Windows 7 displays and handles folders and subfolders in Explorer, and at last count, MS is ignoring the issue. I've tried all available folder options, but they don't do a darn thing in 64-bit. Lots of folks are solving the issue with Classic Shell, but I really resist third party software. It sometimes wreaks havoc on the system. Thanks. - Lee View the thread

  17. I have notice recently that when I have Firefox 17 full screen that none of the hot corners will work until Firefox has been minimized and even then some times you need to click on something else before they start to work again. I have the same issues on 2 separate computers. It never uses to do that before, so I'm not sure if it was a recently windows update or what. I have only noticed it with Firefox so far. Has anyone else ran into this issue? View the full article
