My laptop has been put through the ringer in the past half year, having the MoBo replaced twice, the HD, and various logic boards. It's been in the various service depots either belonging to the manufacturer or approved by them. I got it back and I want to re-apply the upgrade from Windows 7 Home to Windows 7 Pro. When I visit the Microsoft website, they don't provide a ready means do do that. The web process requires that you re-purchase the upgrade. I already have a key for that. Can I re-apply the upgrade? It's the same computer (as much as you can call it that with the upgrades). At any rate, I only have one permanent computer, so it may have changed all its innards, but I will certainly not be using the upgrade on more than one platform (as I only have one, apart from my 1st generation iPod Touch). I was working away when the "busy" spinning circle showed up for the Explorer window that was opened for a memstick. A green progress bar started to creep from left to right in the address bar. I normally see this when file search is initiated, but I didn't do anything like that. I just clicked on a folder in the navigation pane. Is there any way to determine what is going on? I would have thought that if Windows takes control of an Explorer window and makes it unavailable, standard UI principles would dictate that a message be presented to the user indicating what is happening. The progress bar was quick at the beginning, but it seems to be very slow as it approaches the right edge. The task manager doesn't show any significant CPU consumer. View the thread

I just got Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV for my Windows XP 2000* and I was attempting to speed up my display by piddling with the resolution and I hit a stump. I set my res to 800 x 600 and my display restarted (as normal) then, when I thought my display would come back up, it didn't. I can't visually boot up XP, the loading menu pops up, then when its done, closes, then straight black screen. WHAT DO I DO!!! View this thread

I created a document on a web site. This document can be downloaded from the web site only as a Microsoft Word File (.doc), but when that is tried I get the following message. “Works cannot open “CUserJosephAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IESL7EMBSIResume.doc” The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.” Once clicking on OK button a blank Microsoft Works Word Processor opens up. I can down load this file as a Word File on my lap top and on friend’s computers, but cannot download it on my PC (hp pavilion elite hpe) View the thread

So I came across a tip concerning the size of your user profile folder that I was hoping for an opinion on. It comes from http://mintywhite.com/windows-7/slow-boot-slow-performance/#more-10259, wherein he states that if you have more than 3GB in your user profile folder it may significantly slow boot up and some other operations. I have 3.3 GB in said folder and booting is slower than it used to be. Some things seem to open slower than they used to as well. (I have less than the max recommended fragmentation.) He suggests placing unneeded folders on some other storage media if this is a problem. Fine and dandy, thought I, though I really do not want to always be accessing a flash drive when I want something. So I temporarily moved the offensive GB's of data to a folder I created on C drive, shut down and fired it back up. It "seemed" like it booted faster, and that Word even opened faster. Could be all in my head, but before I time it with a stop watch with the offensive GB's in first one position, then the other, I would like to know the following. From a security point of view, can I safely or wisely keep a folder on C drive containing personal stuff? (Nothing critical, just personal stuff) Or should I use another means? Also, if that is a good idea, could keeping such folders on C drive cause any other kind of operational issues? I am running Win7HomePremium with MSE. Thanks, Shoepuppy View the thread

Widows update stope working after a security update for windows vista sp2 was succeessfully downloaded and installedHave been trying to resolve a Vista 32bit windows update problem using the guidance provided in the answer to the "Missing windows installer service, vista sp2 64bit, cannot update anything" question. I can copy provided registry file to notepad but notepad only offers "txt file and all files" save options. I have tried to save using both options but get a "These are not registry files." response when attempting to import the the file into the regedit program. View this thread

I just purchased a Acer M3450 running AMD Quad Core 4100 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It came with 6 gig of ddr 3 ram. It has four ram slots with only three used (3x2gig). I would like to add more ram up to at least 8 gig. What will work better performance wise, adding one more stick of 2 gig making all dual channel or putting in just two 2x4 gig sticks in the dual channel mode. THANKS original title: Adding System Ram View the thread
