Yes many, the easiest that I use when I build one is to just put my Old HDD in my new PC and buy a new Cheap (Small) one for my Old PC Yes you can get a PC to PC Ethernet cable, Not to be confused with a standard Ethernet cable as the PC to PC one has two of the connections cross over You can do it that way as well, probably the simplest and easiest :) If you have a router you can also network the two computers together as well, and with file sharing you can just move them across that way. But the Big Question is are your computers desktops or laptops? and what do you intend to do with your old PC?

Can phone problem be internet related
Match replied to fsyozabil's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hope you have disabled the Wireless Card,In the device manager is best, otherwise the router will be trying to assign the PC two different IP addresses that will conflict, one for the cable connection and one for the Wireless connection. and windows won't be able to differenciate between the two. once we have established an internet connection we can enable the wireless and remove the cable ;) that said it might well be worth trying the first option first and refreshing the IP Addresses by opening a command widow and at the prompt typing IPCONFIG /release if that doesn't work try the second option IPCONFIG /flushdns -

I take it that the Talk Talk tech talked you through connecting to the router (192.168.0.1) and tried resetting the router, and checked that it was configured right? I'm also assuming that he asked you to open a command window and enter IPCONFIG /release or IPCONFIG /renew and IPCONFIG /flushdns or did he just ask you to open the windows network trouble shooter wizard? -

Can phone problem be internet related
Match replied to fsyozabil's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
OK right First of you need to connect to the router using an Ethernet cable and disable the wireless for now till we establish that its a wireless problem or a router problem. Once you are only connected by a cable there are two things to try first first reboot the computer and power off the router/modem for 10 seconds then try to connect to the internet (Open a browser window and try a search sire like google) if that don't work open a browser window and enter 192.168.0.1 to connect to the router login page. let us know how you get on and well take it from there ;) -

Yes it does when trouble shooting connection problems the first and best step is to connect directly to the router using a Ethernet cable (RJ45 Connectors) :) hence I assumed you knew this in my previous post. -

OK two things first a screen shot of the IPCONFIG Open a CMD Window and Type IPCONFIG/ALL at the prompt and hit return the second is TRACERT ww.w.google.com (www not ww.w had to put the "." in to stop the site putting it in as a link :( ) if you can do a screen shot of the two results that will help diagnose where the connection stops ;) -

Ditto Personally I think its a joke BT that is , £127 connection fee, and or for an engineer to come out, then after 18 months of being tied into a contract you have to give then a months notice you want to cancel before your contract ends or they roll it over for another 12 months that they then charge £60 to get out of, unless your me and politely point out you ain't going get paid your line rental until you disconnect the line, then I'll pay what I owe and refuse to pay the reconnection fee, or any other charges as your not honouring your contract to provide a phone line, funny they cancelled the contract and disconnected me :) without the £60 cancellation fee :D -
Can phone problem be internet related
Match replied to fsyozabil's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
when you say wont work? do you get the dialling tone? the fact you have plugged a known working phone into the main socket and the fault still exists means that you have gone directly into where the BT equipment ends and your equipment starts, you mess with anything behind the face plate on the main BT box and your liable to prosecution as it's BT's not yours. I've never heard of the ASDL internet through a phone line causing interference that prevents voice calls the other way round yes. I've experienced Voice calls interfering with the internet signal, but that was a problem that mysteriasly sorted itself out after contacting BT and explaining the problem and asking them to check the line :\ My only concern that stops me saying it's defiantly a BT line fault is the fact the known working phone is wireless, it could be something interfering with the signal, if you had said it was a wired phone you plugged directly into the main BT socket behind the face plate I would say that its definitely a BT line problem. -

Possible problem with motherboard? Strange POST errors...
Match replied to Samble's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Samble Your Graphics card has 512mb of on board RAM which would explain the memory fault and it being resolved by removing the card. I would also make me think that that their is a fault with the card, BUT, as you've tried it in a different machine that brings us back to the Motherboard :( have you tried resetting the Bios and blowing the PCI slot clean? have you looked on the motherboard to see if you can see any blown capacitors, if you look carefully they will be bulging at the top there is a good picture of them here TR Forums • View topic - Samsung LCD TV - LNS4051 power on problem especially this picture http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/328bimmer/Electronicpics004.jpg Normally the ones round the CPU go first but it might be worth looking round the PCI slots first -

You could try this to clear the Desktop Icon cache Right-click the desktop and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab. Change the color depth from the current setting to a new setting. For example, change from Highest (32 bit) to Lowest (16 bit). Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes. Change the color depth back to its original setting. Click Apply, and then click Yes to accept the changes. -

No Outlook Express with Win 7. Help!
Match replied to Quacker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Personally I'm happy with live mail I know what your saying about not feeling right, but I've been using it for sometime now and don't have any complaints. Other than opening my Google mail account takes forever, but while I'm waiting I get to delete the spam and junk out of the hotmail account, and start on reading the serious stuff on my Sky Account. -
Securing a new PC & keeping it so!
Match replied to Quacker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Windows 7 comes with windows firewall, and also windows defender (Anti Spyware) unfortunately due to some strange laws on choice, and freedom of it, don't come with a built in AV, however Microsoft security essentials is free, and so is Avast, and Avira. Personally I use Zonealarm Firewall, Avast Antivirus, WOT (Web of Trust) browser plug in, (AS Well as the Zone Alarm Browser plug in), and other than having a load of different popups and warnings appear when going to dodgy sites, and a couple of downloads stopped and interrupted, I haven't had any Infections. On my XP Virtual, and Vista Virtual machines I've been running just the Microsoft, and windows products, and they seem to work just as well. ;) -
Home pc stuck in a start up loop
Match replied to martine's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
do you have a windows XP disk? and I'm assuming you have tried to boot in last known good configuration? also what make and model is your machine? and what did you do, install or un-install, add or remove hardware, directly before this fault started? -
By not using a registry Cleaner or Mechanic :) the problems with your OS are caused when a program is uninstalled, It will quite often have shared files and registry entries to different programs, that are not removed because they are needed by the other program to work correctly. You will also get some registry entries and files left behind that are simply not needed, unfortunately to work out which is which manually would take hours of reading and comparing, over time these entries build up and that's why it's recommended that every now and again when you start to have noticeable problems that a clean install is called for. or you can use a registry Cleaner/Mechanic to remove and delete the ones it thinks are obsolete, Unfortunately more often than not they will remove needed files and registry entries, or by removing some obsolete registry entries it will create another registry entry that is needed to flagged as obsolete. (False Positives) So basically the more you try to repair the registry the more damage long term you will do until windows is no longer able to run, and you have to do a clean re-install, or a repair re-install, which just happens in my opinion to be the best way to repair a registry. Unfortunately the way the adverts work the site owner doesn't have much control over what is actually advertised, and just because it's been advertised on this site doesn't mean that the site endorses the product. just means it creats revenue to help keep the site open, well that's the theory, the site owner is probably now rolling round on the floor laughing at the amount he gets paid for the adverts.

Is Windows 7 the preferred choice?
Match replied to Quacker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Unfortunately you Don't really have the choice you think you have :) Microsoft Support Lifecycle Anyone buying a new machine with XP on it are going to be leaving themselves open to security vulnerabilities before the end of the machines life expectancy, also I think you will find that over the next couple of years that available compatible software will start to dry up as the software companies spend more time and money developing the software for Vista and Windows 7 Basically when buying new you are best to get the latest, version which is Windows 7, Which fortunately is a lot better than Vista, shame that the same could not have been said about Vista and XP -
taking back to factory settings
Match replied to paullyon's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Paulyon If you would like to post the make and Model of your Laptop we will be more than happy to link you to the manufacturers support page with step by step instructions, only because I'm too idol to type them out. generally it will be that you need to access the recovery partition by pressing ether f1,f8,f10 key at the manufacturers splash screen or just after during boot, and then selecting the appropriate option from the recovery console. -
USB devices require non-existent drivers
Match replied to Greenman999's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
As Dalo said Their is also the possibility they may not even be listed in device manager, What I would do is to re-install the chipset drivers, If that don't work I would go through the device manager and Uninstall everything listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" (start at the bottom and work up), then reboot the PC, and it should install all the drivers back in for you using the windows drivers, then install the manufacturers chipset drivers again. -
This could be a number of things, well two mainly if the fans aren't running basically if the fans start up and you have led's lit on the motherboard then the chances are it's not the PSU, if you have none of the afore mentioned then it will most probably be the PSU, but in both cases it could also be the motherboard. But their is only really one way to make sure with out changing it for a known working PSU Power Supply Test - How Do I Test the Power Supply in My Computer? - PSU Test

In one word "Correct" If you get banned from a site by IP then it will block all connections coming from your router. in this case if it wasn't you that broke the rules to get the Ban you would have to email the site owner or Admin apologising and assuring them that the offending person will not be making the same mistake's. Their are ways around it :D but I wouldn't be popular if I told you how.

OK so it sounds like the partition is still there so as Linkindinkinpark said it sounds like the Win 7 install just re wrote the boot files, and luckily didn't just remove the partition. But this doesn't mean it hasn't corrupted the information in the partition, so Hopefully you read the user guide and made a set of recovery disks or maybe not. so that means were left with or you could find out if they will supply you with a Win 7 copy that's if you like it.
-
OK first if you still have Win 7 Installed you need to check the recovery partition is still intact. Start\Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools, click on Computer management Left hand Panel expand Storage, and click on Disk Management :D or click start, in search box type Disk Management and hit return ;) hopefully you should see a partition around 8 to 12G on your Disk. if you don't you need to contact HP and buy a recovery disk, if you do post back ;)
