PC switching off after a few secs
Match replied to mecca2010's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Have you tried replacing one then removing it and replacing the other one? also have you tried resetting the cmos, there should be a jumper on the motherboard, but if not simply remove the battery for around 30Secs. also if you can get into the Bios it still might be worth checking that all the Voltages are holding stable, just because the PC starts without the RAM doesn't mean that you have a Good PSU as by removing the RAM you are lowering the Power needed at start up. also with the RAM in when you boot the PC does it POST OK or are you getting a BEEP code before it shuts down? -
New hardware found wizard "help"!

Just answering RandyL's Question, this bits for information only. Thing about corrupt driver files is that the ones on the or in the Operating system get Modified every, time you add a new device and if one of the files gets corrupted and points to a wrong registry entry, you get all sorts of problems, Uninstalling them will delete them and when they reload they will be reset to the default values, then as you plug your USB devices back in they will reload the device drivers and modifiy them selves again. hopefully this time getting all the registry Keys pointing to the right places. Unless you have a USB device that's not working correctly or with an error Yes, surprisingly so, you click the uninstall Button, They disappear, You click restart and windows displays (LOL) the new hardware found notification and installs them Automatically. But as Tootech has already posted, you would then probably do better going to the Compaq site and downloading the driver files from there and Installing them, to replace the Microsoft Generic Drivers. -
help req w/ external cd re-writer
Match replied to smartbadge's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
You don't :D windows will, all you have to do is wait for the new hardware found notification, then if you have them, depending on the machine, and want to reinstall the chipset drivers if there are any available for the motherboard (Custom Built) or Manufacturer (if an off the shelf model), but quite often now days you will find that there are none available as the Microsoft Generic driver's work perfectly well. -

can I just point out that all Update does is check with a Microsoft Data Base to see if there is a newer version of the driver, and If you already have the latest version, It does nothing. If you have a corrupt driver file which sounds most likely you need to remove by ether deleting or uninstalling the old drivers that are corrupt, with the same new drivers that aren't corrupt. Hi Smartbadge have you tried re-installing the USB Controller drivers Remove and reinstall all USB controllers To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved. There is also this Microsoft support page that has a few more tips and ideas that may help if the above don't work, It's also on the page at the bottom, but It's the first thing I try when USB devices start playing up ;) Advanced troubleshooting tips for general USB problems in Windows XP -

or drag and drop if you have a monitor big enough to have two windows open and still see what you are doing :) -
OK lets not get the two mixed up, Remote Assistance works through Windows Live Messenger and allows you to request another computer to log into your computer, Dell has been getting some Bad publicity over using this for support, the idea being that by requesting me to log in to your computer using remote assistance I could for example set up your email account for you. Remote Desktop is designed so that anyone with the right IP address and Password could log in to your computer and use it as though they are sitting in front of it, If wake on lan is enabled in the Bios you can even turn it on from sleep mode. useful if you don't fancy going to the office or you forgot to email that report that you prepared last night. BUT, I have also come across a couple of versions of windows Vista that people have Downloaded that set this up automatically when installed and send the Details to a web site !!!! SO it is quite possible for a virus to also do this in my opinion Windows XP: Get Started Using Remote Desktop Using Remote Assistance to Get Help When You Need It

No Problem, just hope that somewhere along the way I helped you find the solution :)

It may also pay to check that nothing or no one has enabled your remote desktop http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/rdesktop_disable.mspx?mfr=true I've given up trying to 'own' my own bank account, lol married :)

Not sure if anyone has got a better Idea or Ideas but what I would do is a: try Paragon right click on the c: volume to see if that will give you the option to extend the volume b: create a new volume d:\ 40gig c: delete the paragon backup capsule, extend c: by 30gig, then create a paragon recovery capsule 18gig I have a feeling that the problem is being caused by the paragon capsule, not totally sure, but then I'm not that familiar with paragon, although I do have a copy I only used it once.

Hi Deejaylufc open Disk Management Right click on your C Partition select extend Volume Follow the instructions (or just keep clicking next to accept the defaults) and that should give you what you want

codex!! in one word, your missing the right ones, try downloading and installing this one K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com but be warned if your downloading from torrent sites etc that quite often you will get told you need to download a certain codec from a certain site, you still won't get to watch the DVD but will end up with a virus. hence why it is always best to pay and download a movie from a reputable site.

Up until AVG 9 AVG was good and I think it was one of the first to use a free version for marketing, however since then they seem to have changed their strategy slightly with AVG 9 Apparently if you used or upgrade to the paid version it will remove a lot of the infections that the free version will only detect and not remove, I think that this is a marketing ploy to get people to upgrade. However I think that this is backfiring in there faces as their are other AV applications that in there free form provide better protection and removal. I personally would be marketing an AV as free to home personal users, and making it as good as possible so when the MD or CEO of a company uses the product at home he is so impressed he returns to work and asks why the companies systems aren't protected by it. as IMO most of the more serious viruses are caused by corporate, government and terrorist espionage, I think its only fair that the home personal user should have protection against the petty criminals that are interested in identity theft and credit fraud for free. and IMO AVG 9 shouldn't display a message saying your system has been infected try upgrading to remove the infection, it should say Sorry we deliberately allowed your system to get infected so as to extort money out of you.

Maker: Dell Model: ??????? :) one of the biggest considerations that we can't answer at the moment is will it physically fit in your case?

Formatting works the same and has the same effect for all versions of windows so why specifically do you want to use Win 98 if you have an XP System Disk Also I don't think that Win 98 can support the NTFS file system and will only format the Drive to a FAT System which will only support files upto 4 Gig but if I remember right, you will need a win98 system disk, easily made if you have a system running win98 and a 3.5" Floppy drive then insert the system disk and at the command prompt enter format c:\ If by Full format you are referring to a method of formatting that writes '0's to the drive theoretically returning it to the state it was in when it left the factory you will find a tool on the drives manufacturer's website that you can download and use.

HP Compaq non-system disk error
Match replied to bwithers's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I think we have come down to the last two options that I can think of! 1 buy a new drive and try that. 2 try connecting the drive to another machine as a secondary drive and see if you can get a back up copy of it before running chk disk on it. -
Boo, Hi there :)

HP Compaq non-system disk error
Match replied to bwithers's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If you have a bootable windows disk to can try that and it should throw up an error after loading the windows files, you could try removing the HDD and blowing the connections (Tin of Compressed air is best but lungs and mouth work as well) to make sure they are free of dust. you could try re-seting the cmos (Would need to know make and model to help further on this) But can you hear the HDD working or trying to read? and are the HDD led's on the front working? sorry about being vague but I am getting to a point where I need to know the Make and model to be more specific ;)
