Laptop can't find internet on working network?
danzil replied to Paper Moon's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
what is the service packs 2 filename...does it end in msi/exe.rar.zip. seems strange. regards danzil -
when in the install directry if you go to view then choose details. in there tick subject and auhoer and in the width box enter 300 or 350.doesnt matter. then click ok now go to view then click details....you should now see the company vendor who made the programs. this will help when we ascertain what the installer is trying to install. have you gone to start>run type in msconfig list everything that is ticked in startup. just incase its in there. but not usually regards danzil

i too use both of those pieces of software. very very handy when you know you have got to do say 5-10 pc's jsut set them all up using nlite..slipstream all updates etc...just leave the cd key out and pc name...that is all it will ask for during install. an awesome pc of software.(my opinion) also removes all the junk that micorsoft add to there already bloated os. removes like beep driver, games if you dont need them, services cd player and all the old stuff that is hardly used. regards danzil

if the pc is left on does it eventually get the taskbar etc (like 5-10 mins)maybe the software is finishing installing or hanging. what is the spec of the pc. can your aunt do ctrl alt delete and see if anything is using the cpu to the max. in task manager is explorer.exe running in process's if not click on new task and type in explorer.exe, taskbar and icons should then appear and on a reboot should be fine. I have seen a similar issue with a talk talk install that removed all the control panel icon (bizzare). let me know if that helps. regards danzil

MS Office 2007 updates failing to install on XP Pro
danzil replied to russbarnes's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
try booting into safe mode (tapping f8 at startup) then type this in the sart>rin command %systemroot% now scroll to "softwaredistibutions" rename that to softwaredistibutions.old click yes to accept IF prompted. now reboot into normal mode and got to the windows updates site and try again. let me know if this does.does not work and i will try a few other things kind regards danzil (you will not be able to rename software distributions folder properly in normal mode so safe mode it has to be) -
Laptop can't find internet on working network?
danzil replied to Paper Moon's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
does your PC have a cd burner.. try downloading service pack 2 (dont believe sp3 will install if sp2 isnt already installed)and burning that to cd, install that on your laptop. that will replace any corrupt files etc. and may fix any host issues, and config issues. that may just help....service packs have cured numerous issue i have seen. bt may not in your case but its worth a try,,, and if something should go wrong it can be uninstalled regards danzil -
if you can find the program name that is trying to install. then you can go to start>run type in "installer" then look at the details of the installers in there.......once you have found the culprit you can fully uninstall it from there. i have had this issue with a botch attempt of installing office 2007 and this worked excellent for me, along with numerous symantec products. have you let the installaer run its course a little to see if it tells you the program name. also maybe worth checking msconfig startup options to see if it is in there. regards danzil

mmmm another reason not to use AOL. cant believe they use smiley central. regards danzil

best way to keep your registry in good order.is to not install software that you are not going to use, uninstalling software always leave redundant registry entries lurking about... unless you know your way around the registry i wouldnt attempt to manually clean it up. keep back ups of your registrys also.burn them to cd..you never know when you may need a key, or a whole string...trust me voice of experience....lol to much tinkering. regards danzil

AOL software probably the hardest software to diagnose. i would try to do a simple test like type in (cry) to see if the emoticon appears....(cry) i cant say is comatible with aol emoticons... like RandyL said uninstall my web search and smiley central they are both spyware. let me know if that works or not. i will see if i can get some more info. regards danzil

All drives i work on are cloned, and an image taken for safety, i deal with some big companys that would not be to happy if i lost there data if it is a hard drive that is sound.meaning no freezing clicking clunking physical dammage.i try the chkdsk if still no joy i do a repair install...sometimes vice versa. if the drive is noticably loud noisy etc like i say i dont try repair installs.i just try the chksdk as you say if that still fails.i do a byte for byte clone to a new drive then repair. i hope that clears that up...sorry if my explanation was a little misleading.trying to eat dinner and type with one hand isnt easy lol :-) regards danzil

Out of a few dozen Unmountable Boot Volumes I've repaired, I've never seen one being caused by a 40 pin IDE. yeah i have had it on at least 5 drives, out of roughly 20 i have dealt with.have a look at this seth http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185. i agree slave the drive for recovery....i have never had a drive fail on me when there has been an unmountable boot volume,,,,i have had 100% success with a reapir install then cloning the drive to a new one. i may just be lucky. regards danzil

sorry seth didnt see your post.

the experience i have had with unmountable boot volumes, usually the file system is corrupt. try booting from the xp cd, then pressing r when prompted to boot into the recovery console, when in there at the prompt type in chkdsk /r. once this has finished reboot and see if the issue is still there if so a repir install of xp is advisable. the error also can be your bios forcing udma to get round this replace the ide cable with an 80 pin instead of the 40 pin.(this is unlikely though if the pc is a factory built pc). regards dan

i would not try plugging this hard drive into anoher machine, especially a work one. (netowrk) you may risk infected the whole system. i would try safe mode, then go to start>run type in msconfig. post a list of the names listed in the "startup tab", we maybe able to block it from running when the pc turns on,so we can then remove it. try deleting all temp files on that pc. how long has this been going on for. what exactly was you doing before you experienced this issue. if it is not a virus you have the option of system restore, have you tried this...try it in safe mode.. i am aware virus's can infect the restore points also but not all so maybe worth a try. post back im sure we can help regards danzil
-
i would try tapping f8 at system startup and choosing the option "disable system restart on error" (ccant remember exact wording sorry). when the quick blue screen happens it will stay on your screen you will receive an error code.post that error code back to us, these error codes can help pin point what is causing your issues. and may even be something qiute simple. i just say this because if you are doing a repair instll and there is an issue with your memory, you may end up back at square one again...but obviously may not.cant say for sure with out that error code. regards danzil

there are special made usb hoovers for this so static cant be that bad from these things. i also have used a hoover many times in a pc and have not received any issues or had any issues come back from customers... i prefer a can of compressed air and a soft clean paint brush though....but sometime man you need a hoover.some of the pc's i have seen i would need an industrial hoover. regards danil pz just my opinion
