I assume the steps you tried in your first post were obtained from this post. Is this correct?

Hi and welcome. We all do our best to help each other here. Glad to have you.

The post is fine where it is woz. Look at post 4 in this thread by BeeCeeBee for some other options. By default Norton will have every security feature enabled.

What browser are you using and what sounds can't you hear?

Dalo sums it up well. If you don't have a suite like he said make sure you have antispyware along side your AV. The point is if you keep the nasties out to start with then scanning for them is redundant. Maybe a shot or two of compressed air from an upright position once in a while to keep things clear of dust and such to avoid overheating issues. You will get different opinions these days about defrag but I haven't seen the need since 95/98/ME was retired. Unless you have been moving massive files around maybe. But like Dalo said just keep it clean to start with.

Hi craig. Welcome to our forum.

Hi Polorky. Nice to have you here.

This is a common setting on many forums for good reasons as BeeCeeBee has noted. I won't go into details as to why but it is not without reason.

Since you don't have the originall Dell disks and used a different set of disks I have to ask which disks did you use and where did you get them? Are you aware that you can contact Dell to try and get the originall Dell XP disks for your computer for a nominal fee? The same is true for any driver disks if you can not download them.

Tezza it sounds like you have removed Office 2003 from this old work laptop. Of course you wouldn't have the disks as it was probably installed through a volume license with your employer. Does this sound right? Either way and no matter the cause you will most likely need to reinstall it which you can not do without the disks. While that is not good news there is a very good option which I use myself. Once I updated to Vista I could not use my Office 2000 files. Fortunately Open Office can. It should work just fine for all your Office 2003 files. Actually I prefer it. You can download Open Office free. And it will remain free. Your other issues may be of concern down the road especially if you ever need to reinstall XP so please keep your data backed up.

Can you please tell us a whole lot more about what problems you were having with the Microsoft update? What was the update? How did you remove these programs? Do you still have the Microsoft Office Professional 2003 Disks? You probably need to reinstall it. The windows 3.0 installer should be included.

Hi new member with an xp problem
RandyL replied to daktariSA's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
daktari I'm wondering if the restore option only fixed a bigger problem temporarily. You have symptoms that could be caused by malware. The fact that they came back after you fixed it by a System Restore leads me to believe you may be infected and the original infection has not been dealt with. The problems seem to be related to a trojan infection or more then one. I don't recall if you have an Antivirus program, antispyware program or a firewall. If you do I don't know what they are. At this point I would suggest you follow our disinfection guide before you do anything else. In most cases it works as is but if there is a problem we can easily work around it. Make sure you follow all the steps exactly as written. Including the SR steps at the end since SR is no longer a viable fix for you. Your computer appears to be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt. Click on the Exit button to quit the program. ================================================ STEP 2 Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [*]Click Finish. [*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this. [*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process. [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 3 Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version). Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. Open SUPERAntiSpyware. Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button. Click the Scanning Control tab. Under Scanner Options make sure the following fields checked: [*]Click the Close button to leave the control center screen. [*]On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer. [*]On the left, make sure you check mark C:\Fixed Drive. [*]On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan. [*]Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer. [*]After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK. [*]Make sure every entry has a check mark next to it and click Next. [*]A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then Finish to return to the main menu. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 4 Please visit the ESET Online Scanner, using Internet Explorer to initiate the scan. Note: If you are running Windows Vista, then you will need Administrative privileges to complete the latter part of the procedure. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Start button. Click the Install button on the following screen. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Please don't use it on a regular basis as this will clear all previous restore points. The feature might be very useful to revert your computer to working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. More On Rules from majic. Even more on rules from Inside Outlook Express. Pay particular attention to filtering in messages versus filtering out. Also make sure you pay attention on the order of the rules as that will determine what happens first and if it will even go to the next rule. I used to have a series of rules that rivaled any filtering program and not once did I filter a mail out that I wanted. However it did take me a few months to get it set up right. Another tip when filtering by words you have to use every spelling of the word. For instance to filter out Bob you need to use Bob, bob, BOB, B0b etc. lol

So I'm assuming that Windows XP was previouvsly loaded on the Primary drive and that you then installed XP from a disk? After that you used the Vista Upgrade disk and chose the Clean Install option. At this point I would like to know exactly what it says on the XP and Vista disks that you bought from this company as they may not be the correct versions. This is important. Immediately after the installation of the drivers did downloads work ok before you installed anything else? What I don't understand is the SP1 updates for Vista. That might have been included with the Vista disk but not on a motherboard driver disk.

Hi pink; You're self taught, still learning, like putting that know how to use to help others and now you have joined our forum. You sound just like me. It's great to have you here.

Like BeeCeeBee said A service pack would not roll back your version. Your version according to you is now 2002 after a service pack which we know no details on while you state your version should be 2005. There was no mention of that originally. Instead you just said your version was 2005 but now you state is 2002 for some reason. The recovery partition no longer works when it used to work. It sounds to me like you ran an upgrade or reinstalled from a disk not meant for your system possibly from a hacked version of Media Center which has now formatted your drive thus removing the original recovery partition. As such F10 will not work ever again as the OS files on the drive are gone. As per why you can't access disk management I suspect the same reasons. Hacked versions are fraught with problems. Since Iqon is out of business I believe your only option is to purchase a full retail XP.

What hasn't changed? The files and folders that you already downloaded? Probably. Have you downloaded any files since you uninstalled it? I'll bet not. If so what were the files? I'm thinking that's a moot question. Did it set up a folder structure? If it had the answer would be no unless you downloaded from the P2P again. Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. I'll bet you only get a file. Four minutes from the time of Tootechs last post to the time you posted you say you read the rules, uninstalled the P2P and you must have downloaded new files to test it since you said you still have the problem. Then you still had time to come back here and post all in under four minutes. A bit too fast I would say. In all honesty I don't believe you are being honest with us about removing the P2P and want us to provide a fix to get the program to work the way you think it should. This Thread is Closed. Any attempts to deliberately circumvent our rules can result in a ban from the forums.

Hi citrus and welcome to FPCH. I sincerely hope we can be of assistance.
-
Try typing diskmgmt.msc in the run box. What service pack was this? What version of Media Center did this PC have when you bought it? Have you tried contacting Iqon support to see if they can supply you with a recovery disk? Have you ever used a Disk to load the Operating System?

Different forums will use different fonts. Outlook Express and Windows Mail use Arial. At least mine do. I think Word uses Times New Roman unless it's Word 2007 then I think it's Cambria. Here in the U.S.A anyway. This might be different if it's setup elsewhere. Unless you changed the default fonts every time you open those programs they will open to the default. If you don't know how to change the default fonts I doubt that you have managed to do so. Ask anything. That's why we are here.
-
Verdana is the default font for the forums but you can change it to a few others. I think Kaje mentioned that font for that reason.

Log on as administrator. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK. On the left click Disk Management. That should show you if have a recovery partition and if it's healthy. Usually it will show the C Drive as the main drive and the D Drive as the recovery drive. Can you tell us what you see there? If the D Drive/Recovery Drive is not present or healthy then I would say that option no longer exists. Why are you trying to run the recovery proccess? More information about that might help us. Is this a laptop or a desktop computer? F10 does appear to be the right key to press at bootup for Iqon but support options at the Iqon site appear to be almost nothing at all.
-
Hi michael; What is the model and number of the Iqon PC? Are you trying to use a recovery disk or restore to factory defaults from a partition on the drive? If it's the latter how did you used to start the proccess? Also does the recovery partition show in disk management? I see you show your operating system as 2005. By operating system we need to know if it's Windows XP, XP Pro, Vista Basic, Vista Home Premium etc.

See if this has anything that might help. Goku provided these links some time ago. Follow the instructions carefully.
