alienware laptop BOOTMGR is missing
RandyL replied to louis15889's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi louis; Did you mean to type BOOTMGR? Oh yes you did. It's in the title. -
Hi again trilobyte; It seems that you must have had at one time PC Confidential from winferno installed. It was probably the trial version. Is it listed in add/remove programs? It seems that the uninstall for that program does not always go well. I don't see it in your startups so I'm guessing that is what happened. Try Revo Uninstaller to see if it can remove the program in it's entirety. Note that you may have to reinstall the trial version of PC Confidential first. If that does not work you may have to resort to manually deleteing files and folders as well as searching for obscure entries in the registry for it. WARNING: Do not use a registry cleaner under any circumstance or edit the registry without guidance. This can be extremely dangerous to your OS if you are not carefull and may result in even worse problems. Try Revo first. Hopefully nothing will go wrong.

Pc Lagging CPU idle for long time...
RandyL replied to bewaniuk2005's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
To remove the ASK toolbar in FireFox go to Tools>Add-ons and then look in the Extensions or Plug-ins. Like Kelly said there is a good chance you are still infected. Toolbars can be dropped in by a wide variety of sources from being bundled with legitimate programs or malware. I have heard that ASK can come bundled with Frostwire but I don't know that to be a fact. If you are using any P2P or Torrent software remove them IMMEDIATELY. Next you should follow OUR guide for malware removal. Please follow the instructions carefully. Your computer may be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt. Click on the Exit button to quit the program. ================================================ STEP 2 Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [*]Click Finish. [*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this. [*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process. [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 3 Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version). Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. Open SUPERAntiSpyware. Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button. Click the Scanning Control tab. Under Scanner Options make sure the following fields checked: [*]Click the Close button to leave the control center screen. [*]On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer. [*]On the left, make sure you check mark All the Fixed Drives. [*]On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan. [*]Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer. [*]After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK. [*]Make sure every entry has a check mark next to it and click Next. [*]A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then Finish to return to the main menu. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 4 Please visit the ESET Online Scanner, using Internet Explorer to initiate the scan. Note: If you are running Windows Vista, then you will need Administrative privileges to complete the latter part of the procedure. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Start button. Click the Install button on the following screen. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. Happy Safe Computing! SWash please go back to the problem computer. Set a restore point so you can easily undo any changes. Safety first. Verify that your copy of Office is legit to rule out any propblem with that. The last thing we want to do is make things worse or dig you into a hole.
-
Just to recap; You have two problems. Sound is not working which could be drivers. System restore is not working. Windows should pick up basic sound drivers after uninstalling them. System restore is troubling. What security programs do you have? Do you have a current and updated antivirus program?
-
You might want to also check that your version is Genuine since you got this computer second hand. To do this click on the blue Validate Office button at the left on the following link. Genuine Microsoft Software All good advice so check it out.
-
Sorry Sims. I didn't see you posting.
-
Hi SWash; The trojan issue is indeed disturbing but let's start with the basics first. I assume you have the original Microsoft Office disks. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the original Office disks that you bought?

RandyL replied to Diurno's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Validate HTML at W3C I've used the above to fix errors on a site I hand coded in notepad. Mine was in pure html and it worked great. Check all your pages but running through your home page found 28 errors. Here are a couple more: WDG HTML Validator Site Valet and Page Valet -
Problem with website and firefox...
RandyL replied to Diurno's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Diurno; You could check your code with W3C CSS Validator. If it passes then your code should work in any decent browser. If not then you need to manually edit your code to make it cross browser compliant. -
windows xp home edition service pack 2
RandyL replied to pauline5650's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
RAM is very cheap to add and easy to do. Go to the Crucial site and you can find out what you need and how much it costs. Depending on the make, model and number of your PC you can take it back to factory settings via a recovery partion or by any disks that came with it. But the bottom line is you will still need more memory to do much with it. -
The answer is still the same. If you want it to boot into Windows you need to reinstall Windows after you put it in. You can't simply transfer an OS to a different computer by switching the drive.

They make good coasters for a beer or soda pop. I have plenty of experimental disks too. lol

As maynardvdm says try uninstalling the ports from device manager. Particulary anyhing that says something along the lines of Universal Serial Bus Controllers or Host Controllers. Then reboot as he said. However I have to reiterate that once a reg cleaner is used all hope may be lost as those are usually bogus programs and even those that are not can do harm beyond repair unless you know exactly what you are doing. Often times a reinstall of Windows is the only way to undo the damage. Backup all your files just in case then proceed is my opinion.

Congratulations maynardvdm on achieving over 2,000 posts. We sure are lucky to have you and your knowledge. I hope to congratulate many more members so start posting everyone. :):):)

Unable to install windows updates
RandyL replied to Rachel1's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
As noted by maynardvdm the use of a reg cleaner is not recommended. This can cause more harm then good. Viruses and trojans have been known to disable Windows Updates. I noticed you only recently installed AVG and tried a reg cleaner too. If you were running unprotected then you might be infected and should attempt to clean your computer with the best tools available. Hopefully the reg cleaner has not done too much harm. I'll let our members offer more advice on this as maynard already has. They are all top notch. -
I knew that everyone here would agree. You all know the issues go beyond safe habits. Although I do have one computer running unprotected. It's not hooked up to the internet and only my disks go in the tray. Although someday I really must clear out the remnants of the AOL infection. And AOL was on it when I got it. I didn't do it.
