How to peel a Hard Boiled Egg W/O Peeling.
RandyL replied to DSTM's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I really have to try that. I hate peeling. -

A never ending quest it is. Well put and welcome. Everyone here loves to help and loves to learn. Look around and post. You won't be dissapointed.

For the record everyone. I use Mcafee Internet Security Suite. I also have Windows Defender which ships with Vista. I use SpywareBlaster too. Of course I use a little common sense with installed programs but I also put my system to the test with web surfing and other things. Often I deliberately visit sites I know to be infected. Maybe I'm just lucky or maybe I'm not click happy or maybe my settings are locked down tight. Or maybe all. I'm not making a specific point. I'm just passing on my experience. I hope these aren't famous last words before I crash and burn.

Hi Sue; First of all I never suggest running a registry cleaner as it can completely corrupt Windows unless you know what you are doing. Especially if it's not a good one and there are very few. There is a good chance that the User Account is corrupted. Since you can access the the User Account files in the Administrator account I suggest backing them up before doing anything else. Backing up is important anytime. Now more the ever. Please hold and the techs will offer more advice.

I agree Doug that upgrading to IE7 is a good place to start. After that resetting the advanced settings will eliminate the IE add-ons.

PCI Graphics card for Dell 1100
RandyL replied to mark121's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If you have to do a rebuild then thats different. If you have a full version of Windows that's different. You still have to contact them though and explain it. It's not always easy. On an OEM computer the license is tied into the hardware. The only time you can change a major harware component like the mobo is if the old one failed. Otherwise the limited license is tied to that OEM computer. There is a reason why it's cheaper. With a full version of Windows all you have to do is deactivate and reactivate. -
Hi xanthus; Am I correct that you have, Windows Vista Home Premium. A 1.6 ghz processor. 1 gb ram. AOL. CaTrust that comes with AOL. Are you running any of the other AOL specific programs? Are you running any default OEM programs at startup? Have you disabled any of Vistas startups? Have you added any programs since you first got it? A slow startup is usually caused by three things. Malware. Startup items. A failing hard drive.

PCI Graphics card for Dell 1100
RandyL replied to mark121's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Actually this is an issue and not as easily solved in many cases. The more components that are changed the less likely Microsoft will re-activate. To get Microsoft to re-activate after a MOBO change you will need to call them and convince them that the reason for the new MOBO is because the old one failed. Otherwise they will consider a new MOBO a new computer. An upgrade will not qualify. Couple that with numerous other hardware changes and you likely won't convince them of anything. Keep in mind this is a Dell and he does not have a full version. As a side note what is that Activation phone number? I think it worthy of posting. -

Like Dalo said a new MOBO or a new computer would be a better option. Just be advised that you may have Activation issues with a new MOBO as Microsoft would consider it a new PC. -
Hi xanthus; Since you have run scans in the past I'll assume your system is not infected. I would venture that your computer is not up to running too many startup programs. Your processor is weak for Vista and you have too little memory. Combine that with the fact you use AOL. AOL and it's add-ons and all the other garbage it loads at startup is likely part of the problem. You need to disable as many programs from running at startup as you safely can. Do not disable your AV of course.

A new Jag. I wish. At least I have the car seat fillings. Anyone care to donate some more parts until I get them all? :p

Windows XP still outselling Vista
RandyL replied to Dalo Harkin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
More people use XP because more people still have it. It's been around a long time. Most people don't want to replace a computer that works just fine until it quits working and needs replacing. Then of course it's Vista as XP nears the end of support. Also it's hard to find XP OEM and will be harder still as Microsoft has finally cut off sales. My software? Let's start with Office 2000 Pro and move on to older versions of PhotoShop and PrintShop to start with. I have many others. (autocads etc.) Office won't install right in any mode. Other programs are buggy as hell. The functions don't all work the same, work right or work at all. For instance Vista no longer supports .hlp files. I have the fix but no one else will. I'd better stop for now. -
Windows XP still outselling Vista
RandyL replied to Dalo Harkin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I bought Vista instead of XP because of the life cycle of support. Microsoft doesn't want to support an operating system for more then 5 years if they can help it. No money in that is there? But let me ask this. Would you buy a car/auto if you couldn't get parts for it 5 years after you bought it? What if your car was defective and the manufacturer knew it but since it wasn't made known to the public within 5 years they had no responsibility? OK not quite the same thing as a car costs more then an OS but given that you also had to buy a new computer and you may have a ton of money tied up in obsolete software the cost could easily reach to thousands and thousands of dollars. Just to have to do it all over again. Where is the consumer protection? -

I only upgraded because I had too. My Windows ME quit. Now that I have Vista thousands of dollars of my software is obsolete. -

Windows XP still outselling Vista
RandyL replied to Dalo Harkin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
There's home users and there's the coporate and business evironment. Which one was Microsoft aiming at with all the bells and whistles? From a business standpoint why upgrade every single computer since it needs new computers and licenses when the old software works just fine. Of course if they use other Microsoft software they will make sure it won't run on the newer system. I can't run Office 2000 Pro on Vista. I doubt that Office 2003 will run on Windows 2007. Do you see the game? As far as home users goes they will like the glamour until they find out their peripheals and other software are incompatable. In that respect it's a complete flop. I miss my old programs. End of rant. For now. -

MS Office 2007 updates failing to install on XP Pro
RandyL replied to russbarnes's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi russ; Can you download and save the first update from here? Onced saved try to install it. -
Type command in the run box. Once in the command prompt type sfc /scannow
-
Type "command" without the quotes in the run box first. Then type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.
-
I'm also still using version 2 with no problems. I'm also clearing the private data when I exit. Try what goku said and revert to 2.0 to see if it helps.

I have never seen that message when using System Restore. This might be an infection issue.
