Think I'm about to get ripped off?
RandyL replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi PEV. Since you have a HP Pavillion you might need more than two disks. HP tends to have a lot of bundled software. Although there are a number of disk types that will work I use DVD-R. If yours is like mine go to Start>All Programs. You will see a folder named Recovery Manager. Inside you should see Recovery Disk Creation. Click on that to start it then follow the easy prompts. It will examine the disks to make sure they are the right type. It's very easy to do. -
I'm no even going to check the links since you were kind enough to list some specs. We are not a gaming forum but I can assure you that any PC with 4 GB of ram and Windows 7 is not even close to a gaming machine. These are low end PC's.

I might add...... An insurance company would value a 14 month old PC at about half the value as Ken said. Personally I would not pay more then 20% over retail for a 14 month old PC. Even then I would insist on an OS disk. Not to mention all the work to restore it to a new condition. And no Gaurantee from the maker. A PC is even worse then a car. As soon as you drive it off the lot depreciate it by half. And yours is old by computer standards. I know people will pay more looking for a bargain but for those who know it's not a bargain. Bargain hunters are also looking to buy cheap. Gamers are looking to buy good at any cost. Although at that price you might have a mighty fine PC it's hardly top end for gaming. Twice that price is a real game PC minimum. Say $3,000 to $5,000 American. And that's new price not old price. This is why people buy things like Xbox to play games. If you list your actuall specs on ebay you will likely get realistic bids. But we will not get into the business of such matters. We are here to help sort problems as Ken said.

[Solved] Half white Desktop.
RandyL replied to roanantelope's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks Starbuck. Coming from you that's high praise. Ken your humor is always welcome. Yes I have issues now and again. :) But my issues are nothing compared to those of Windows ME. Active desktop always was a problem on older operating systems now that I recall. Best left turned off if you ask me. Thanks for marking this thread solved Ken. -
[Solved] Half white Desktop.

You're welcome. I finally remembered that I had a similar issue way back with Windows Millenium Edition. -
Finding the root cause of your mouse problem would be ideal. In the mean time use Ctrl-Alt-Delete. If this brings up options use the arrow keys to get to a shutdown option. Press Enter to select an option.

[Solved] Half white Desktop.
RandyL replied to roanantelope's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
"Active desktop" I believe that on xp you can right click the desktop and disable active desktop. This feature is not needed if you use a bitmap file for a background. Edit: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000593.htm This link might help. -
Just a thought. I have a cooling pad with a fan. It powers via USB right off the computer. Obviously this would consume some battery life but if you're connected via a plug-in it works great and no need for a seperate plug.

MS Word Issue (with XP Pro)
RandyL replied to grahamknott's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I have no idea either. Perhaps using System Restore or reinstalling Word might work. -
Right click the link and "save target as" or open the pdf and select this middle icon. [ATTACH=CONFIG]793.vB5-legacyid=1575[/ATTACH]

Hi pc49. I take it you can view the pdf after clicking the link but the "save" doesn't work within the pdf? Are you using Adobe Reader and is it updated? Also instead of opening the pdf file from the link have you tried right clicking the link and choose "save" or "save as"?

sharing files over a wireless network
RandyL replied to dmouse09's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I couldn't agree with Ken more. It will save you a tremendous amount of grief. Networking two PC's is an option but it can be a pain to set up. Compounding the setup is that you have XP and Windows 7. These two systems set up differently by themselves but the real pain is networking the two together. You have to chose the right group, the names have to be the same, you have to change the security settings in advanced options and type the right permissions for the sharing etc etc etc. XP to XP or 7 to 7 networking is not that hard but XP to 7 networking is not nearly so simple. I usually set a restore point first so I can go back and start over after I muck it up. I don't do it enough to remember. And if you have a security suite that manages network connections you may have to manually over ride a lot of settings to get the two to see each other both ways on XP and 7. -
What you are probably seeing is the shortcut to a program that no longer exists. Poorly written programs or uninstallers often leave behind things like shortcuts. Right click the program then select properties. You should be on the shortcut tab. If you select Open File Location it will take you to the folder that the shortcut points to. In this folder you should see all the files that are needed to run the program. Is there an exe or application file there? Is there an uninstaller file there? Don't delete anything there as it may be needed. I'm guessing that there might not be much in that folder.

What would the best format be for youtube?
RandyL replied to Aldaz108's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I think you will find the format will not make much difference. What really matters is the quality of the video itself. Saving the video at high quality is what really matters. Even wmv looks good on youtube if the video was saved as high quality. The file size will be larger of course. Using a mpeg file will be much larger then wmv. Quite honestly I can't see the difference on my computer monitor so I doubt that it willl matter on youtube. Upload a high quality file of any type supported. -

XP Pro repair reinstallation problems
RandyL replied to rjhfandclf's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi. I assure you that you were never banned. Further no notice was sent to us from you. Are you sure you were on our forum and not a different forum? Although it could have been a glitch that you saw a banned message we still would have received a message had one been sent. It's also a possibility that malware may have been playing up on your system. -
That would do it as it is a pdf creator. I never used it but it has been around awhile. Thanks for the information Simon.

Maybe it's your font settings. Go to Fonts in the control panel classic view. Appearances and Personalization>Fonts in control panel normal view. In the left pane click Font settings. Click on the Restore default font settings button and put a tic or check in the Hide fonts based on language settings box. Click OK.

PDF is a document format. You have to use a document program that supports saving as PDF. Even then you can't save a web page as PDF unless you copy the contents into the document.

I can confirm what Nev said about Dell having different hardware on the same models. Even with a service tag there is no gaurantee the computer will match the specs they provide. Sloppy if you ask me. One can only assume they will use whatever is convenient or cheaper on any given day. I also agree with Ken. Although a repair option might be possible in some cases it does not always work.

Hi tracy. Not much of a big gamer myself but I can answer a question or two. Your profile says Windows XP so letting us know you have Vista is a good thing. The diagnostic you refer to is dxdiag. Go to your run box. Since this is Vista it might be in Accesories. type dxdiag then click OK. The good part here is that it will tell you more about your system specs as well as being a diagnostic tool.

You're welcome lorenzo. These things do happen so backup the important things.
