In vista you can set windows firewall to block outgoing traffic too, is there any reason to do this though?
-
Just a quick question, I seem to have two product keys, the one on the bottom of the laptop and the one that product key scanners find. Looking online this doesn't seem that unusual but I'd like to know why, I'd also like to know which it is best to use if I ever need to reinstall vista although I imagine either will require a phone call to microsoft.

Printer sharing between XP and Vista
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Perfect thanks 1) The livebox has a built in firewall so I'm presuming that's covered. 2) Vista has SP1 and XP has SP3 so that's sorted 3) Both computers are running Sophos and SAS, so another tick 4) I think the passwords are OK, although they aren't changed that often 5) Doesn't apply So hopefully its as secure as it can be. -
Printer sharing between XP and Vista
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks, I'll have a read through. In the mean time I finally found out how to get Vista to map the XP computer. So this is how its its set-up, apparently. All I'm really worried about is that anyone can get on and look at our files, I don't think they can but would like to make sure. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm67/D_Hunter315/Network.jpg -

Printer sharing between XP and Vista

Hi, its a windows warning saying that setting it up in such a way would mean anyone on the internet could access the shared files, which didn't sound brilliant. -
Its really bad, I've just read through this and have them all installed. I use Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 but have Openoffice installed too. And now I'm a poor student I'm just waiting for the Ultimate steal deal to come back up and I'll get the whole lot for £40 or whatever. I'm a sucker for cheap or free software.

Hi, I've been trying to set up a network between our XP desktop and my Vista Laptop, I have to say networking in Vista seems to be a lot better. Really the main reason is so that I can print from my laptop through the XP computer. I wanted, and have succeeded in setting up in the following way. The computer is a wired connection and the laptop a wireless one, they both connect to the internet through a orange livebox router ( I know don't even go there) separately. Windows XP doesn't seem to think this set-up is a good idea and brings up a security warning, it wants me to connect the laptop to the destop and then to the internet. Which I'd rather not do. Can anyone help me with the securtity issues here, ideally I'd like to have file sharing turned off altogether and only turned on on the rare occasions we need to share files. And printer sharing always on, but although this is possible with Vista it doesn't seem to be with XP. As always many thanks.

Umm not sure if this belongs here but anyway. I'm going off to uni in a few weeks and have been reading Edinburgh's advice on computer security. This is what they reccommend. As far as I can see it pretty much contradicts what I've read on here. Security Anti-Virus Software In the University environment it is essential that you use an anti-virus product and that it be kept up-to-date with new virus data. The University has a site-license for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise that allows staff, matriculated students and Honorary Fellows to use it on their own machines - it can be downloaded inside the University. For other users our recommendation is to either use the free version of the Grisoft AVG package or another commercial anti-virus product. Please note that any antivirus that came with your machine is likely to be a limited time evaluation version. Anti-Spyware Software Windows Vista comes with Microsoft Windows Defender included, so there is some protection against spyware already installed. However, no spyware product has a 100% detection rate and it is always a good idea to regularly scan with other products in case Defender is missing anything. Two such packages known to work with Vista are LavaSoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I think I'll be sticking with what I've already got installed.

Hi, I'm not using Zone Alarm. Its working although not really sure why, I changed the ports to 110 and 25. Despite them being set for the last year at yahoos recommended 465 and 995. Then unticked the "log on using secure authentication" box and its working. Thanks for all the help.

Both the servers were already as you've suggested. I am know getting a slightly different message though. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F Also, in case its important I tried with the firewall turned off and it made no difference. Edit, now tried both .co.uk and .com, and get the above error

Hi, that particular error message is for receiving mail, but it won't send anything through the yahoo account either. Thanks for the help.

Hi, I have had Windows Mail set-up fine for ages now. Its still connecting fine to my AOL account, but I get the following Error from my Yahoo account The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of recently and haven't done anything to do with my security, so am a bit at a loss. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions, Advanced Setup, I really am not capable of making head or tail of that link, lol. I have no idea what any of it means.

I'm wanting to make a drive clone to protect all my data, but quite honestly I've completely confused myself. I read through the list of free drive cloners on this site and am pretty much sure I want to use the recommended EaseUS drive cloner. But I'm trying to work out exactly what I need to do. Hoping you can make sure I actually understand what I need to do. So I download the program and burn the image to CD. This CD is then bootable, so I boot from the CD Then I can select the original drive and where I want to write the clone to Is that right. Also, how would I go about restoring the clone and how big a partition do I need, if I'm cloning a 80GB hard drive do I need a 80GB partition for the clone or is it reduced. Sorry, even reading this post I suspect that I've got the whole thing completely wrong, so hopefully you'll not think i'm a complete idiot.

I was reading an older post where Seth referred to HP computers as being like Hondas. Which started me thinking, what car would you compare your ideal computer too. I think mine would be a Subaru, probably the Outback but I'm not picky providing it isn't the new Justy Why, Well its spacious Japanese - so you can't go wrong there Its reliable Powerful They'll last for a long time Can take a few bashes Well built Its not too flashy but gets the job done. And can go just about anywhere So yeah, just a bit of fun. What would yours be.

Thanks, I'll give the software a go. The drive has nothing written on it.

That's the sort of question that makes me look like a total idiot, lol. It's a laptop and I had no idea. PC Wizard says its Optiaric. I have to say I am pretty impressed with Nero, but can't seem to find a free version, are you able to point me in the right direction? Thanks
-
Thanks, I got the following error when I entered the command http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/shrimply/Capture-5.jpg

Well I'm trying to use Windows DVD maker but as I said the process only gets to about 99%
-
Yeah I can, but then I don't use the DVD maker for that. Also can now add with Nero I can make DVDs no problem, so its definatly a problem with the DVD maker as I suspected.
-
Hi yet again, I've been trying to burn some things, home movies, pictures slideshows, etc to disk using windows DVD maker. However, regardless of file types and burning speed, it gets to about 99% and comes up that it has failed to burn. It appears I'm not alone in this issue by doing a few searches but the only solution seems to be to by software like Nero and WinDVD, neither of which I can afford or justify buying. If any of you have any idea how to fix this I'd be very grateful, I am at the minute downloading a trial version of Nero to rule out that it is the burner or DVD that is at fault. Many Thanks

Rescueing photos burned as DVD
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Its OK panic over found the same photos on a CD as I worked my way through the pile. I'll answer the question anyway just to let you know, I could open the files in movie player but only as a full slideshow, I though I might get somewhere by trying it in the XP computer as that's what it was written in, but I just got up a whole load of file errors, at least Vista could read it. Anyway the disk is now being wiped and put to a more sensble use, thanks for the help. -
Rescueing photos burned as DVD

Hi, no I think although I'm not sure, I've just discovered the disk while doing some tidying up, I don't know if I even wrote them to disk, but i'm guessing it was done with windows movie maker, these are the files on the DVD http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm67/D_Hunter315/dvdfiles.jpg -
Hi again, I have a DVD with a slideshow of photo burned to it. We seem to have lost the original photos, is there as way of saving the photos as individual files on the computer.
