hmm, properties work in both folders but there is nothing particularly spectacular in there. Music2 always reappears with an empty folder in it "Christmas music" which I also have in the correct music folder but with files in it. The other music folder contains well music ,lol again nothing unusual. I have no back up software running or third party music software that I run regularly except VLC player. But it does usually reappear at start-up and windows media centre runs at start-up so it can always keep the TV times up to date, could it be this? Thanks for the help

No Music2 is back to reappearing, I really don't understand why. Its not set as the shell folder. Shell:My Music brings up the right folder and the right folder is shownin the registry and yet Music2 reappears on most restarts. This is annoying me but I'm not prepared to do a reinstall to fix it that seems a bit OTT for such a little problem I'll just put up with it if there isn't another option.

No wait I tried the Shell:My Music command yet again and it actually found something, and my music folder is back and working. Now presuming Music2 decides never to reappear it might actually be sorted. I'll keep you updated and many thanks for the help.

Hi Have done both, been doing a bit of looking myself. Been looking here, Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder - Page 4 - Vista Forums But so far had no luck, I completely deleted the music folder and made sure the registry entry was correct but so far it just does not want to reapear.

My pc cant find other computers on network

I'll just add that when I did this a while ago, this didn't work on SP3. I found an unofficial release somewhere though so you may have to do some googeling. -
Thanks, I have a new and I presume related problem, the music link on the start menu now no longer works. If i click it I get nothing and if I right click and go to properties there is pretty much a blank page

Why? Without being rude as far as I'm aware it has nothing to do with this problem, I've not done anything to change the folder icons, Only tried to get back vistas default folders, I now have the desktop.ini files for each folder so getting back the translucent blue folders is easy. Since the only christmas icons I've edited are the shortcuts on my desktop I don't see what the problem is. Is there an issue with using self created shortcuts? When your stuck studying instead of enjoying yourself during december having a slightly festive desktop helps keep your spirits up. Of course I hate to disagree with you as you constantly give me good advice but I'd like some more explanation as what you think is wrong with this issue. Once I copied the files from music to music2 it renamed itself music, so that would appear to have solved the issue, many thanks.

OK cheers, I'll stick all the files onto an external drive then have a fiddle about.

While were growing up christmas formed a slightly strange routine. We have our meal on christmas eve, and few of the family stay over but it gives christmas day mostly to ourselves. Then in the morning the stockings were explored before a big cooked breakfast. After that we start on the presents under the tree. And we have the whole day not worrying about christmas dinner. Me, lol. first of all I get to finished my exams, then I get to host a christmas party. But after I get home, well its the smell of fresh pine, the crisp frosty mornings, the open fire, and of course the food.

Hi I Restarted the computer and still it is not showing up in the shell folders as you can see Do you think that moving my music files into Music2 and renaming it would solve the problem anyway? If nothing else I suppose its worth a go.

Hi, bit of an interesting one here, at least I think it is. A long time back before I found a easier solution I was trying to get the default translucent blue folder icon back for my music folder. Most people who have vista know they have a habit of changing back to regular folder icons. Now I can't remember exactly what I did but at some point I created a file named Music2. I then deleted it. Fine? No. This folder has a habit of reappearing randomly empty apart from the sample music folder, sometimes its obvious why it happens, like If I save a new playlist it saves in the playlist folder it creates in this location. But I'm at a lost as to why. There is no mention of it in the registry under shell folders but I really have no idea what I'm doing that was just a thought. SO any help appreciated.

Hi, once again I have no idea if this is a good section to put this in I've been doing some time wasting recently and customising my icons (badly) in order to make them a bit more festive. I'm not doing anything smart just downloaded a Christmas Icon set and have been blending them to the originals. Like this Still need a bit of work. Anyway I have two questions, firstly is there any free software for converting .pngs to vista icons, I have a free trial of axilias icon workshop which does the job nicely but wondering if there is any freeware that an do the same thing. And also none of the office 2007 shortcuts will let me change their icons, which is a pain, is there anyway around this, the option in properties in grayed out. Thanks.

I dunno if this should be under software but just a big thanks to whoever on here suggested 7-zip. I just had a friend on the phone who was having all sorts of problems accessing some uni work. After the initial problems of accessing them what was supposed to have downloaded as a .zip file had downloaded as a .zip.part file which I had no idea how to open and neither did windows. It was only after a while of me saying that all you need to do is right click and extract all she told me it wasn't a .zip file. As a last attempt I got her to open 7-zip, previously installed by me, and navigate to the file and click extract all, she apparently got a few messages up but I just said click yes for all of them. And what do you know it actually worked. SO thanks.

Is anyone else having wee woes with Firefox?
shrimply replied to Mara's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I've been having a few problems lately trying to get retuned work from my university, i get a security warning that I can't bypass. My friend has had no problems as hers, which is the same version as mine lets her confirm the certificate as safe. i managed to manually add the certificate to mine but it was a lot more work than it should of been. Apart from that no issues. Wolfy, will firetune make a noticeable difference? I presume it won't on the uni system which is fast anyway but at home i have a 8mb/s connection which is lucky to reach 2 so a bit extra speed might be nice. Also I presume it has to load at start-up, and if that is the case does it slow the start-up time noticeably? -
hope you don't mind me adding this as it doesn't really answer the question. You'd be much better letting your son choose, being close to that age myself, i would never like for my parents to choose anything technological for me. Not only will your son know exactly what he needs but there is a good chance he will also know the best place to buy it saving you some money. If its a total surprise then I know that it can be a let down, but personally am always happier to get an envelope containing a picture of what i'm getting and a price limit on christmas day than something that i am unhappy with or i know my parents paid too much for.

yeah I put in the product number (85877) in the drivers search and get a blank page with "any new drivers or updates available for your product will be available here" at the top. -
Laptop doesn't install drivers for USB mice
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
yeah, I know its just that surely vista should install the drivers that work automatically or at least after you've manually showed it once which ones are needed, maybe I'm expecting too much. I just find it strange it will install the keyboard drivers but not the ones for the mouse. since I travel between uni and home quite a bit its not possible to have the receiver plugged in all the time, which really is the main reasonfor me asking to save me hassle. But if its not possible then that's fine I guess. Thanks for the help. -
Laptop doesn't install drivers for USB mice

There's no disk, its just plug and play, as I've said its does work I just have to spend 5 minutes messing about in the decvice manager, which seems daft. I did actually get software with my last set, mainly for all the extra buttons on the mouse I think but they weren't compatible with vista and I kept getting the blue screen, so uninstalled them forgot about the extra buttons and used the drivers available on vista. -
I've had this problem forever but always put it down to the one mouse and keyboard set. I got a new set today though and the exact same problem. Its a wireless set and are supposed to be plug and play but although its happy to install the keyboard drivers the mouse never works straight off. It comes up as an unidentified device in the device manager. To get it working I have to choose to update the driver to any unreccommened mouse driver. Then it will appear under mice, if I then choose to update the driver again I get a list of three options and on choosing HID compliant mouse its working. So far I've not tried a mouse which I can't get working through this method but it seems to be an awful lot of hassle though when vista clearly has the right drivers. Also since I have to do it most times if I unplug the reciever and plug it back in. Cheers In case it makes any difference it a medion mouse from aldi, but as I said it does appear to be a dislike for wireless USB mice in general. Oh and I do apologise for the personification, lol

I've just checked the windows update info and its been updated windows did install two updates yesterday, one of which was the windows update agent, so hopefully that's all it was. The two warning I posted were the only recent ones in the event viewer so I'm guessing I'm worrying over nothing, thanks

Time and date are fine, and I really don't looked like possibly the directions to a registry entry, or something, I didn't get much of a chance to look at it.
