Anyone want to help me choose a laptop
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Well just thought I'd update this. I still haven't got a laptop, I've just went to order the Dell to find that they've put the price up by £30, which puts me in an awkward position. I've now brought my computer home because I'd decided I'd get a a laptop. I don't really have £430 to spend on a laptop, and besides I don't really think its a decent price any more but at the same time had my heart so set on the dell that I can't really find anything else that I want. Just feeling a bit gutted at the minute, now I need to buy a laptop, but don't really want anything except the one i can't afford to pay for. So yeah its gone well, they must of only increases the price 2 or 3 days ago -
Anyone want to help me choose a laptop
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Yeah it does thanks, can I just ask is there any benefits of running an x64 operating system over a x32 operating system when using 3GB of ram, or does it not matter one way or the other. Hard drive size really isn't an issue since I wouldn't be using the laptop as a main PC, plus the fact I'm only using 95GB on my computer anyway. Been doing some research and the chances are that I'd get the T4400 procesor on the samsung rather then the T4300. My reasons behind wanting the Dell are, 1) It looks awesome, has a brushed steel ( effect?) finish, which looks really nice 2) It has the core i3 processor which I believe should have a pretty good performance 3) It has a full HD screen, although not sure if that's normal on most laptops now But i've heard plenty of bad things about Dell, alongside the positive ones. The Acer does look pretty nice, apart from the fact that I'd rather avoid PC world, Currys etc if possible. Have you got any opinions on the brand in general -
Hi, not sure if I am going to get a laptop or not, as money is a bit tight but I'm beginning to feel that it might be a good idea. Basically I don't need it for much, just basic surfing and word processing etc, and although a longer battery life would be beneficial, I'd prefer better performance over longevity. My budget was £350 when I started looking but from my suggestions below I think under £400 is more practical. I have a real problem with what I want to do and what I should do so I'm asking for your opinions on these three, very different, machines or if you have any other ideas. HP Compaq 615 Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer £358.99 Well this is the cheap option, it was under £350, I promise but has went up a bit in price. The positives are that it's a compaq which are pretty reliable I believe, its from ebuyer so I'll get it fast and hassle free. Negatives - only mono speakers, only 2GB of ram (easily upgradable to 3GB but its extra cost), i'd prefer an intel processor over AMD. Buy Samsung R519 15.6in Laptop. at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for . £399.99 This is the sensible option I think, mainly due to the 3 year warranty, but I've heard a few negative things about Samsung laptops, it also has a poor webcam, and from what ive seen isn't the best looking product in the world The Dell Online Store: Build Your System £390 ( with student discount) Well at the minute this is the one my heart wants, but I've heard both good and bad things about Dell. Its by far the nicest looking of the lot and has a new probably better processor. My concerns are the number pad on the keyboard which, to me seems like a pointless addition and looks like it would make typing awkward. Anyway would love some thoughts, or other suggestions. At the minute my head says the Samsung and my heart says the Dell.

Hi, well I think this is one of my best questions as I'm completely confused. Basically have just been looking at the network on my computer, running windows 7 x64, and as well as the computers that should be there there is another one. It's titled w/ww.bio.davidson.edu ( without the / but it creates a hyerlink to Biology @ Davidson otherwise), which takes you to a university site. Now I am a biology student so I'm not sure if that is coincidental or not and I'm pretty sure until now I've never visited that site until today but I have been downloading quite a lot of scientific papers recently for essay research. Its not connected to the router so it must be over the internet but I've got no idea what's going on, it doesn't look like its malicious or anything, but I'd love some thoughts and ideas on how I go about getting rid of it. Thanks

Computer wakes from hibernate by itself
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Thanks, I copied everything from the system log from last night when I tried to hibernate it , it coming back on and it staying on hibernate after I unplugged the webcam. I couldn't really see anything else in the logs from that time, and I may be being stupid but can't find anythign about previously scheduald tasks in the task manager, sorry its so long. Hi, I'm having a few issues with my PC, I'm hoping this is the right section, I'm running window 7 home premium x64. Basically my computer has a habit of suddenly coming back on when its hibernated, usually it occurs just after hibernation, the computer switches itself right off the comes back on. But it has woken me up at least once by just coming on in the middle of the night. On thing I've noticed is that on the rare occasions that I have a webcam attached, the problem is much more common. I can try hibernating 2 or 3 times and only get the computer to stay off when the webcam is unplugged. Anyone got an answer, Many thanks.

Achieveing a Password protected guest account
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Again I must apologise, I have managed to do exactly what I wanted. Crazy thing is that you can only rename the guest account and then create a new standard user account using administrative rights within the guest account, even after renaming the guest account within the guest account you can't create a new account named "guest" in any account apart from the "guest" account without being told there is already an account named "Guest". -
Hi, hoping someone might have some ideas as although I imagine this is fairly easy to do on the more expensive versions it doesn't seem to be possible on Premium Basically I want to create a guest account so that other people can use my PC but I want it to be password protected. I thought this would be as simple as either 1) adding a password to the guest account 2) Creating a Standard User account named "guest" However neither is possible, there are plenty of guides on how to rename the guest account on windows 7 but they aren't possible on Home Premium. If all else fails I'll just have to call the "Guest" account something elsse, but if anyone has any ideas how to set it up exactly as I want it that would be great as it seems beyond daft that you aren't able to Create a user account named "Guest" that requires a password.

Thanks, I have to say its been a lot more complex than I expected to install, took three attempts to install it before I realised it was the graphics card which was the issue. I honestly have no idea how the upgrade key worked as I'm sure the final install never saw the previous windows vista install. And I've only just managed to find and sort why it wouldn't use my full 4GB of Ram, I suspect there was a similar issue when I was running vista though and I just never clicked. However, its all up and running now and I think I'm pretty happy with it.
-
Well sorry for wasting your time, it seems to have sorted itself out, no idea why but the graphics card is now full functional.
-
Hi guys hoping you can help, I've finally got around to installing windows 7 on my computer, I did a full install instead of just an upgrade and seem to be having a good few problems, the main one at the minute is that although onboard graphics work fine. As soon as I change the bios to use the graphics card despite downloading the latest drivers from ATI for my radeon 3600 and the lastest motherboard drivers from asrock, the computer will freeze during startup, where only the logo and "starting Windows" is shown. Has anyone got any suggestions, may not seem like a major issue but i use the VGA input in my moniter for my old laptop with a broken screen, so really need the digital output on the graphics card so I can easily switch between the computer and the laptop. Many thanks.
-
Thanks, I'll give that a go. I think the problem is more specific than I first thought. I've discovered it will search within files for a search term but appears only to do so if the file is created by me. So it won't look within the documents, for instance powerpoints, that I download from the uni. They aren't locked or anything only difference is that they're obviously not authored my me. Is this a known problem or is something wrong?
-
Hi guys really need some help, my search isn't working properly, despite haveing "always search file names and contents" ticked its only searching for the files names. I have no idea why and its causing me a lot of problems. I have an exam tomorrow and it means that instead of simple searching my lecture notes for the term I'm looking for I have to trail through a whole semesters worth of notes. Any help is really appreciated.
-
I'm pretty sure this is only an upgrade version, I'd love to be told wrong and will definitely get one. To be honest though microsoft offering an upgrade "to save students money" is a joke. Because if you already have a working computer then most students would never bother to spend the normal amount of money to upgrade so by offering this cheaper microsoft will actually get more money out of students. On the other hand students are exactly the type of people who are likely to build they're own computers, or buy second hand computers which need a new OS installed in order to save money. And therefore would really benefit from getting a full OS cheaper. And it would of course also benefit those who wish to upgrade. I personally have been running Windows 7 on my netbook which came with linux, I'd have jumped at the chance to get the full version for £30, but after March next year, I'll probably go back to linux.

Windows live mail and yahoo, windows 7
shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi guys, its been a good few days since anyone other than myself has replied to this thread. Is it fair to presume that non one here has any solutions? And if that is the case is it OK for me to post this elsewhere and link to this thread to save the hassle of typing it all out again? Sorry but I really want to get this resolved as its a big issue for me and is making the netbook seem a bit of a waste of time as the one program I rally want to work with it isn't working properly. -

shrimply replied to shrimply's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Randy, Initially I had copied the setting folder directly from one the other computers that works, which is a method I have used successfully in the past. Meaning all the settings were identical. Since then I've also tried letting windows live mail automatically configure settings and tried manually configuring settings, uninstalling and reinstalling windows live mail each time. But I continually get the same error. Currently yahoo is the only account I have set up so as to avoid confusion while trying to find the problem. As to programs interfering, its a netbook so there's practially nothin running on it anyway apart from the essentials, and I've disabled everything I can imagine would be the cause, if you have any suggestions of what ele could be blocking it then that'd be great. Thanks for all the help guys, I'm finding this very frustrating as there just doesn't seem to be an explanation. -

Just some more info as I've been trying to get it working and am not sure if what I'm trying is likely to be required. I've tried disabling the firewall. I've switched the antivirus off and actually switched from Avast to Avira I've disabled UAC I've tried in safe-mode with networking Same error everytime. -

hi again, It's version 14.0.8089.0726, which settings do you want to check, there's quite a few pages but as I say I have the account set-up identically on two other computers so can't see why it would be anything to do with the settings. I can access yahoo mail on the internet fine on the netbook and the error message generated is posted above. Thanks. -

Hi again, Goku - I'm using avast on the netbook as well as one of the computers that is working. I'm not really sure what to do with the link you provided as it seems to be mainly about adding hotmail to outlook. I tried reinstalling, but basically the same problem, it connects initially to yahoo and downloads the messages on the server, but after that all other connection attempts fail. -
