  1. Right the NEW CPU may not be supported by the BIOS that you have installed - go to the Motherboard manufacturers website and download the latest BIOS update - install it with the old CPU in and then power down and put the new one in and see how it goes.
  2. Is one of the largest mass storage vendors in the world set to purchase one of the most well known flash vendors in the world? There is a new rumor floating around that Seagate has been eyeing up SanDisk for a potential purchase or merger, a move that wouldn't be surprising but would impact the flash market. Some of the reasoning behind this is easy to see. Seagate has already made it clear that they are willing to sue SSD manufacturers for supposed patent infringement. How far they will get remains to be seen, but it's not likely they will make much progress with lawsuits considering the number of manufacturers developing SSDs. Because of this, Seagate might want to get a huge advantage over other SSD manufacturers, relying on SanDisk's technology combined with Seagate's already long list of enterprise customers. This is just a rumor for now, but a very plausible one, and one that could impact greatly the adoption of SSD drives.
  3. The white slots that you are referring to are PCI slots, chances are that the slot you have on your Motherboard for graphics is AGP 8X or 4X. If the CMOS didnt work - if you leave the pc on (even though there is no monitor on) does the PC carry on being on or does it restart - when you put the CPU in - did you put more thermal paste on the heatsink and are you 100% sure that all the wires are connected and secure both in the PC and outside of it.
  4. 10 seconds for the battery is fine...............we dont want you to grow old :D
  5. When you use a router - it changes the IP address etc - your work will be set to recognise your pc - after installing the Netgear router - you no longer have the same IP address.
  6. No problem - I will leave the thread open until you install the new drivers and see if the errors in the log goes away.
  7. Yes that CPU is fine - are you using onboard graphics or a card? did you reset the CMOS?
  8. As a side note - you are always better off going the manufacturer of the components to download the drivers - MOBO's eg ABIT,ASUS and GIGABYTE etc GPU- these may be made by ASUS or GIGABYTE etc but they are still reference designs made by NVIDIA and ATI/AMD and you are better off with the NVIDIA and AMD/ATI drivers.
  9. WD40 lol - can you take a video when you do it :D (not seen a decent electrocution in a while) 18 months is not too bad, depends on the make of board really.
  10. You need to go to Nvidia website for the drivers Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers yours is a 7 series card - get the new driver - uninstall the OLD one and reboot then install the one you just downloaded ;)
  11. Yes, try swapping the slots and see what it says - it is not uncommon for PCI slots to die.
  12. There is no easy way to do what you describe - I would just block the net on his account if I were you. It also depends how he is downloading the software - via the internet or P2P.
  13. There is no RAM listed in that - is it PC5300 (667Mhz) PC6400 (800MHz) PC8500 (1066MHz)
  14. What graphics card is it- model number?
  15. Yeah - I would uninstall the drivers and then reboot and see if windows picks it up - failing that try another PCI slot and see if that works.
  16. Right the /AUXSOURCE flag is far too detailed for me to write about - but have a look here Detailed Usage of the Event Viewer /AUXSOURCE Switch Option Also do you have the latest drivers for your card?
  17. Just nine months after Crysis came out and made even the most expensive PCs burst into tears, Crytek has already announced that the sequel, Crysis Warhead, will be out in just a few weeks. The UK release date has been set for 19 September at a price of £19.99, and it’s a standalone game so you won’t need a copy of Crysis to run it either. Following the complaints about high system requirements after the release of Crysis, Crytek promises that Crysis Warhead has been ‘optimised to run better on a wider range of PCs,’ as a part of a strategy to make the sequel ‘more accessible for gamers new to the Crysis franchise.’ The developer also says that the game’s story works fine on its own, without prior knowledge of the first game. As well as the single-player game, Crysis Warhead will also feature three multiplayer modes, adding TeamInstantAction to the InstantAction and PowerStruggle modes found in the original game. Crytek claims that the new mode ‘mixes fast-paced action in a team-based environment,’ and that it will add six new maps, which can also be used in the InstantAction mode. Crysis Warhead follows the story of the original Crysis through the eyes of Nomad’s bluntly vocal Cockney sidekick, Sergeant ‘Psycho’ Sykes. See the Crysis Warhead website for more information.
  18. We’ve heard plenty of game developers complaining about piracy recently, but it’s not often that you hear about a game developer actually listening to the pirates to find out why they pirate games. That’s what indie game developer Positech (developer of Democracy and Kudos) did, when its founder, Cliff Harris, publicly asked pirates to tell him why they pirated his games on his blog a few days ago. After being inundated with blog comments and emails, Positech has now responded, and has decided to change the way it works on a few key issues. One of the interesting changes in strategy regards DRM, as Positech had underestimated just how much people hate it. ‘The extent to which DRM is turning away people who have no other complaints is possibly misunderstood,’ explains Harris, adding that: ‘If you wanted to change ONE thing to get more pirates to buy games, scrapping DRM is it.’ Harris says that he’s now ‘read enough otherwise honest people complain about DRM to see that its probably hurting more than it help's [sic].’ Positech has now removed DRM from its games that featured it, and says that it will ‘now use no DRM at all.’ Another common complaint was the short length of game demos, which didn’t give you enough of a feel for the game, which Positech also says it’s going to address. ‘I'll be making my demos much better, and longer, and will retrospectively change this when I get around to it for some of my older games,’ said Harris. Harris also acknowledged that the pirates who had responded to his blog had ‘revealed a huge group of people who really appreciate genuinely good games,’ and says that he plans to put a lot of effort into making his future games as good as possible. ‘I get the impression,’ says Harris, ‘that if I make Kudos 2 not just lots better than the original, but hugely, overwhelmingly, massively better, well polished, designed and balanced, that a lot of would-be pirates will actually buy it.’ Of course, while it’s great to see an indie game developer listening to people’s complaints and realising how unpopular DRM is, it could be a long time before we see the larger game developers following suit. Has Positech made the right decision to listen to the pirates’ complaints? Would you be more likely to buy a game if it had a longer demo and no DRM? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
  19. The slowly increasing popularity of OS X could, at one point or another, attract greater attention from would-be criminals and those bent on breaking into people’s systems. While Windows is the target platform of choice for most, OS X has come under increasing levels of attack in recent times. That's what security specialists are noticing about both iPhones and Mac machines, particularly this year. Not all of the increased attention is bad – with increased popularity also came a rise in the people reverse engineering Apple protocols and protection systems, which led to wonderful things like the ability to unlock your iphone in user-friendly ways. Ultimately, though, it also means that there will need to be an increased vigilance on Apple's part to make sure systems stay patched, as well as an increasing number of malware created for it, such as a new trojan spotted earlier this year. So far Apple has been doing well on releasing regular updates – but as Windows has proven before, once you reach a critical mass of users it will be very hard to issue a patch before many become compromised.
  20. Earlier this year, Intel was criticised for allegedly keeping the USB 3.0 spec to itself in a bid to lock customers into its chipsets. Such a move had many worried of a forking of the spec, with Nvidia, AMD, VIA and others threatening to co-develop a more open USB 3.0. Intel, of course, denied those claims and today helped dissipate concerns over potential multiple versions of the standard by making a royalty-free draft specification available to it's competitors. The Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) draft specification for the USB 3.0 architecture (also known as SuperSpeed USB) will allow chipset makers to develop hardware that can communicate with USB 3.0 system software in a standardized way. Support for the new specification appears to cover all the major players, including AMD, Dell, Microsoft, NEC and Nvidia. This is very important to stimulate adoption by consumers and should mean product development using USB 3.0 will soon be underway. The new standard will offer ten times the bandwidth of its predecessor, USB 2.0, supporting data-transfer speeds of up to 4.8Gbps.
  21. Right ok - go to control panel and then Administrative options - there is an event viewer in there and you should be able to get rid of any errors there ;)
  22. Do you have the windows firewall turned off?
  23. Is the sounds onboard or a card? If the front ones are not working then chances are they are not plugged in - have they ever worked? if you have a card then the front ports should be plugged into that. if you have onboard and none work then I suggest that you find the MOBO driver disk/or visit the website for the MOBO and then uninstall all the audio drivers and install the latest ones - they may have been corrupted.
  24. Thats no glass.......................It's a fish bowl :D
