Oops, my 'hard drive' is red ...
Dalo Harkin replied to Mara's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
All those JK DRIVES seem VERY suspect, I am sure they are all just files of whats been moved around etc but still I wouild remove that program. As for Defrag programs (deep breath) Right, defrag programs are only really meant to be used if the HDD is over 40% fragged (this is my own opinion not in a book or anything :D) you will NEVER get rid of all the fragged files - it's just impossible and with Windows defrag 'utility' which is cr*p, you can actually cause more harm than good. You will not notice an increased amount of loading times when a disk is fragged unless they are big files - GAMES etc. I personally use O&O defrag, but again this is my personal choice. -
The fact that it is saying OS not found says that it is searching for the HDD still - Make sure that the CDROM is the FIRST boot device and disable 2,3, etc.

Yes I would say so - Capacitors on MOBO's are prone to giving up the ghost (especially on budget MOBO's)

Once again an extremely slow system!!

Have you checked with Dell for the updates - they should all be on their site? If you have 2GB RAM then there are not many programs that would touch that amount. Have you looked in MSCONFIG as there may be many things running that do not need to be. PS - Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help does not condone or offer support for P2P programs - please remove it :) -

LOL - yeah people use toilet roll too - but I would not recommend it - it's about £4 for TIM remover and it will last you for about 30 processors. you could try using baby wipes but the reason that you use TIM with cotton is so that you get it ALL off and leave no remnants on the CPU - remember the cleaner the face of the CPU the better the contact with the Heatsink and the less heat is generated. If a site recommended baby wipes I would block the site from your memory....................FOREVER. All I will say is some people botch PC's together and some build them :D -

P6T Deluxe features remote overclocking device allows you to overclock your motherboard during benchmarks, while the Matrix graphics cards' Super Hybrid Engine allows you to adjust your graphics card’s GPU and memory voltage The launch of Intel’s new Core i7 Nehalem processor might still be taunting us from the distance, but Asus has already unveiled its new Socket 1366 P6T Deluxe motherboard for the new CPUs, as well as a bunch of new graphics cards. Among the P6T Deluxe's interesting new features is a handheld overclocking controller that allows you to overclock your CPU on the fly, even during benchmarks. The device will be available with high-end boards, but Asus also plans to make it available as an optional extra for other compatible motherboards too. While on the subject of overclocking, the board will also include Asus’ Turbo V software overclocking tool, which allows you to adjust the CPU multiplier without rebooting Windows. Intel reveals the launch dates, models, speeds, and hints at pricing of its first range of Solid State Storage devices Specifications for the disks are fairly impressive, with the mainstream disks boasting up to 250MB/sec sustained read and up to 70MB/sec sustained write. The X25-X is even faster, with sustained reads of up to 250MB/sec and sustained writes of an incredible 170MB/sec. Previous SSDs have usually fallen down on sustained write speed when compared to conventional hard disks, but no current hard disk can claim 170MB/sec sustained write speeds. Part of the reason for the high speeds is the Intel-designed and proprietary NAND flash controller that took ‘tens of man years to design’, teamed with the compute-quality ONFI 1.0 NAND memory chips. Following news that “significant quantities” of mobile GPUs from Nvidia were overheating and failing at a “higher-than-normal rate,” Dell promptly dished up a list of its notebooks that might be affected by the issue along with a BIOS patch to help prevent it. It seems, however, that the company is prepared to do more than just that. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis

Security and storage giant Symantec has bolstered its consumer product portfolio with the acquisition of PC Tools, an Australia-based provider of Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic, and other security tools. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis

What's the adoption rate for Vista in business environments? Excluding those companies who outright won't use it, and only including machines that are sold with Vista by default, it seems there is a significant number of companies “rolling back” to Windows XP. According to one particular study, the rate could be as high as a third – which some people might see as a reluctance to migrate. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis

Russ - there is something seriously wrong with either your:- 1 - PC 2 - your version of OFFICE 2007 We have covered lots of posts and lots of fixes, but we could be here for the rest of our lives trying to find every fix and every setting. You have uninstalled Office and deleted all the REMAINING office files from the C drive - therefore when you install office again it will be at default settings and SHOULD work. If all you are having problems with is the updates - and all other MS updates work then you can only really:- use OFFICE as it is or wait until your PC needs reformatting (but again there is no way to tell if this would cure the problem) I don't want to sound negative but we are getting nowhere fast! and we must ask ourselves when enough is enough.

Black screen startup flashing cursor - HELP
Dalo Harkin replied to zkm1223's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
This is far from cheap as Wolfey has said and most of them do not 'trade' to the public. I once had to do this for an old company I worked at and it was £500 and then VAT and that was for 250GB worth of data. As Wolfey has said previously - cut your losses and put it down to experience. And from now on REGULARLY back up your DATA -

You can just swap the processor out for the new one there is no need to reinstall XP. :) Yeah the scythe ones come with a backplate and basically you have a plate that fits on the back of the MOBO and the heatsink screws then screw into that plate - they do this on heavier heatsinks so that people dont snap the MOBO while trying to fit the heatsink  As for removing the thermal paste - I use AKASA TIM CLEANER - it's basically just citrus based liquid in a bottle, you can smell the orange in it, and you just put some on a piece of an old t-shirt and wipe away :D *Make sure that you use about a grain of rice (length and width) for the thermal compound - too much and it will spill out the sides of the heatsink onto the MOBO and it's not easy at all to get off then as you dont want to be using to much TIM on a MOBO as it's liquid based* There is also hardly any difference between the 4800+ and the 6000+ - get the new heatsink and OC the 4800+ -
the PSU would depend on the spec of the PC - on the side of the PSU it will tell you the WATTAGE - you are better just getting one of the same WATTAGE - if its under 400W you are looking £30+ and if its 600W you are looking £50+ It is a very simple process to install the PSU - and in the first instance seeing as though we want to test if the PSU is the faulty component or not - you can just plug the PSU into the ports on the MOBO and the HDD and then power it up - you dont need to fit the PSU inside the case until you know that is the 'malfunctioning' part.

You must need additional sound codecs - AC3 is the most common that you need Codec.com

Chances are that you have an Nforce Motherboard on your Laptop - insert the driver disk that came with the motherboard and they should be on there.

Ok:- your SCREENSAVER is what kicks in when your PC is left on for a designated amount of time. your BACKGROUND is set by you - normally a picture. Both can be accessed and changed by right clicking on the desktop and selecting properties and using the tabs along the top labelled screensaver and desktop.
