  1. No Doug, I mean setting up a new connection in Windows. You could disable all the programs or run in safe mode and try a ping to yahoo. No if you are unsure of the ports then leave it well alone for now.
  2. Lol - you don't use a sledge hammer for a nail do you Seth :D you use the right tool for the job :) (please no tool comments )
  3. No problem Doug - have you tried setting up a new connection? It is very difficult to offer advice on this, well from my end anyway as I am in the UK and there are so many variations between US and UK and I am guessing the same is true of Australia?
  4. When the BIOS posts - it will tell you what button to press to get into the BIOS - its sometinmes del and you have to continually press whatever button it says not just press it once. It sounds like someone has done what I always do and set the first device to HDD and then disable the 2nd,3rd options.
  5. so that is the download client according to the error that you posted its a zip file - do you have/unpacked the zip file?
  6. Are there any exclamations on the network adapters in device manager?
  7. Hi Steve, Welcome to FPCH :)
  8. By the way ISP's always blame AV - what Firewall are you using Doug?
  9. 20 metre cable is quite far for a phone line cable - not an Ethernet one. do you know what ports that the ISP uses? The security suite you use normally configures it for you - but there are settings in the Firewall that you can check under the ports and see if they are open.
  10. To be honest if you cannot even see the BIOS post then there is not much else it can be - try the Monitor first and see whats what
  11. Do you know anyone that you could borrow a Graphics card or a monitor from so you can eliminate one of the two?
  12. If it was a problem with more than one disk then I am sure there were some things we could have asked you to try, but seeing as though its just one disk, I think it best to just leave it alone, as some of the advice I was mentioning could cause more harm than good.
  13. I would be guessing - but I would say that this is a security measure by MS.
  14. If you have no other problems with disks - and its just this one - i would not recommend the firmware update. I am afraid that some disks just do not work with some players, and I doubt that there is anything we could do to help you. (as its just the one disk)
  15. Is the disk scratched badly? If you have never had any problems before with other original disks then try it in a home dvd player and see if that works and failing that the disk is for lack of a better word 'broke'
  16. As Wolfeymole has said is this a copy or a bought version of the film?
  17. Hi and welcome to FPCH some drives are very awkward - you could look on your manufacturers site of the drive and see if there is some updated firmware. from memory Billy Connolly DVD's are SONY owned and these are normally the most 'awkward' disks for DVD drives to read. Sony spend so much on encrption that some Home DVD players do not even recognise the disks. try the firmware and see if that does the job.
  18. This could be a number of things - a graphics card will run with basic settings (you can install the driver later on in windows) it may be at 800x600 :D If there is no signal - do you not even get the BIOS script (the white writing on the black background?)
  19. yes that's true - if they are recovery disks, it takes you to the log on screen, and that's it.
  20. Use the one on the bottom of the laptop - its normally a bunch of keys tied to a company ie DELL and then Microsoft when you activate it give you a unique one - very, very odd
  21. If there are no drivers for Ethernet installed then there will be a yellow exclamation next to the network adapter. somtimes windows update will get one for you, but I still recommend installing the one from the MOBO disk and it should then work.
  22. Produced in conjunction with Seasonic, the Fusion 550R promises up to 86 per cent efficiency and two 17A 12V rails Arctic Cooling isn’t a name you usually associate with power supplies, but the cooling company that brought us the legendary Freezer 7 Pro plans to change all of that next month with the launch of its first PSU; the Fusion 550R. Developed with the help of previous Custom PC award winner Seasonic, the Fusion 550R has an interesting cooling system, with an 80mm fan mounted on the side that’s inside your case. This pushes the hot air outside and avoids a right angle in the airflow, which Arctic Cooling claims will help to reduce hotspots in the PSU. The fan itself is an Arctic Cooling F8 Pro, which is fitted to the rubber mounts that you’ll recognise from the company’s heatsinks. The fan can spin at between 700rpm and 2,000rpm, and with the speed determined by an internal processor that adjusts the revs according to the PSU’s temperature and load. In addition to this, the PSU also has connectors to control a further two case fans, which can again then be controlled according to temperature and load. These hook up to the PSU’s 12V rails, and draw up to 0.15A each. The Fusion 550R has two 12V rails rated at 17A with a total output of 408W. Meanwhile, there’s a maximum of 24A for the +3.3V and 5V rails, with a combined output of 130W. Arctic Cooling rates the unit as capable of outputting 500W continuously, and 550W at peak. The company also claims that the unit’s efficiency is between 81 and 86 per cent, with 99 per cent active PFC (power factor correction) efficiency. All of this has led Arctic Cooling to dub the PSU a ‘payment saving unit’ (see what they’ve done there?) when compared to a standard power supply. 23. Gav, Have you tried without the router in the setup - just straight from the ISP and see if that works - if that doesnt work then its the settings on the pc - if it does work then its the settings on the router.
  24. It wasn't that long ago that people were saying the same of Adaware and Spybot - give it a few years and we will be using something else :D
  25. Pesky Malware - surely the BSOD is always the same though, and anyone good on pc's could tell the difference. I have not seen this yet but I am sure I will :D Thanks for the heads up Pete :)
