  1. When you say Flashget and FDM are they P2P (peer to peer programs)
  2. Unfortunately mate it's a catch 22 they are always advertising and that gets them customers - that and the fact they somehow manage to swing major deals with Dell and whoever. Luckily ESET have started to advertise lots now in the UK and I am hoping that they overtake the likes of Mcafee and Norton, granted it will take time but when people see what Nod32 can do compared to Norton there is no comparison.
  3. There must be a driver issue with the Cruzer - what model is it and I will have a look for the driver
  4. If the Heatsink on the CPU is not fitted correctly then there is a high possibility this is the problem - the problem that you are describing is more common on overclocked systems, you may just need to redo the thermal paste that sits between the CPU and the CPU heatsink. again this is an easy process - do you know what cooler you have on the CPU? do you know what socket the processor is? 775? There are 2 bridges on the MOBO:- Northbrige at the top of the board - it will have either a fan on it or some pipes and the Southbridge at the bottom of the board and again it will have either a fan or some pipes on it - fans are more common on older/cheaper boards, and pipes on enthusiast boards.
  5. Hi Imagen, Welcome to FPCH :) Right the lines that you say you are getting across the screen is due to heat build up. This can be caused my many things, but the suspect areas are:- 1- The Northbridge on the MOBO 2- The GPU chip and ramsinks on the Graphics card. 3- The CPU itself can be getting hot. resolutions (corresponding to above numbers) 1 - get a fan that points at the Northbridge. 2 - get a replacement cooler dependant on the mounting points these are fairly cheap and easy to fit. 3 - get an uprated heatsink for the CPU, again these are cheap and easy to fit.
  6. If you are an Ubuntu user, you may want to take note that the company has issued a warning to all its users to make sure they are using the latest version of the distro. Due to a security flaw, the vendor has warned that all versions from Ubuntu 6.06 onwards to 8.04 are vulnerable to a local security exploit that could result in system compromise once the attacker gains access to root. The flaw is not a remote vulnerability. The attacker would have to have an account on the system in question in order to attempt the exploit, the result of which could range from crashing the system to compromising its data. The issue affects multiple editions of Ubuntu, including Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis
  7. Microsoft is expanding the scope of their Windows Genuine Advantage software, which as many of us know tries to reduce the number of pirated copies of Windows in the world. This latest update targets Windows XP, and makes it more similar to the version of WGA found in Windows Vista. The latest update goes a bit beyond the frequent reminder messages that tell you your OS is pirated. This time, the update will automatically change your desktop background to a plain black, overlaid with a WGA warning – similar to the login screen change they added to XP a while back. This time, however, if you change the background, WGA will just change it back. This is a pretty bold move by Microsoft, who has faced a considerable amount of criticism for introducing WGA in the first place. They also faced numerous teething issues with it, with estimates at one point claiming that up to 42% of the installs identified as being pirated were false positives. 8. Although a large population of users have already migrated away from Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows' built-in browser still dominates at large, for better or for worse. Its latest iteration, IE7 is still a very decent browser although with more recent releases of Firefox, Opera and Safari, Microsoft has once again fell behind in terms of features, customization and perhaps most importantly, performance. The software giant has been touting all year long the progress they have been making with Internet Explorer 8, however with their latest beta 1 release they demonstrated they were far from reaching the stability and usability point where you can actually use the browser as your primary navigation tool. Even worse, it tended to break many many sites. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis
  9. Sorry Keith, in 2002 the first version of Media Centre Edition of XP was released - you have XP and I bet that the person you are referring to uses XP MCE
  10. No problem - glad that its all sorted :)
  11. No mate as long as its one at the back of the PC and not the front. there is a site that I use called toast.com I think it is and you can select different companies globally and test the up/down speed and the sizes of files that you download/upload vary too.
  12. No - the MOBO only beeps when there are problems. if the lights and the fans are going then 99% of the time its all ok :) test with a monitor and GPU and come back to us, and we can go from there.

  14. Harry I cannot urge strongly enough to use something other than Norton for backups - use Acronis - even if you get the Norton backup onto disks chances are that you will not be able to load them back again - the online one is slightly more reliable but as for CD/DVD Norton is not up to the job.
  15. Put it in the memory banks under - 'learning' :)
  16. I bet that the version thats on it is MCE and not just XP
  17. Norton 360 - God help us all  I have seen some shocking reviews on it - strange for a symantec product :D, why do people still insist on buying what 'shops' say:- Seth - I hope you will be 'advising' them on stronger software with a hammer in hand if need be lol
  18. Depending on what speed internet you have from Virgin they may give you one FREE or you can get one from them for £40 and as Wolfey says they are fantastic routers. and if you need help setting it up - me or/and Wolfey will help :)
  19. No problem Mara - :)
  20. The powered adapter can make a huge difference Doug, especially if its not USB 2 and is USB 1.1 - try without the USB hug and connect directly to the MOBO at the back of the PC
  21. Glad its all sorted :) Gav for future reference when building a new pc, it should be done in this order:- 1- install the OS and any available service packs 2- install the drivers from the MOBO disk 3- install the graphics drivers. if you do any other configuration then you can have some major issues ;)
  22. When you say the icon - I take it that its a shortcut - manually navigate to the C drive and then program files and try and launch it from there. The shortcut could have just stopped working.
  23. What is the driver you are using at the moment 177.41 is the latest version from memory - go into C:/nvidia and post whats in there. can you also tell me what speed the RAM is.
  24. Have a look here mate Windows XP Internet Connection Setup (1 of 3) - BBS 42 and where you get the option to manually setup or load from an ISP cd - I would use the CD that your ISP gave you. Hope this helps
