you cannot just swap HDD's as your HDD will have all your info for your MOBO on and his for his MOBO - you are missing lots of setup files and thats why it will not boot - if you have slaved and got the majority of the data off then thats good - what can you not get??

are you playing the music through WMP 11? sounds daft but is that turned up and have you set the options within the control panel under sounds and checked they are at maximum - and that the connectors are in the right sockets on the back -
you normally get them when you buy a retail DVD/CDRW NERO.com i think it is mate - I have just looked and they are all trials - I am sure that someone you know would have bought a retail DVD/CDRW there will be a NERO disk in that

New PC Build - Help Needed Please!

is the keyboard USB - you need to use a PS2 keyboard. and when you do the BIOS and boot to windows - install all the MOBO drivers and then the keyboard will work. If you dont have a PS2 keyboard you are on a sticky wicket as you need one in the first instance. -

Right one short beep is RAM ok - The MOBO supports the RAM so its not that - can you get into the BIOS and manually enter the timings? - do you know how to do that? no disrespect is meant but will help when I reply -

PCI Graphics card for Dell 1100
Dalo Harkin replied to mark121's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Mark, PCI graphics cards are very old and I thought that they were obsolete... found some Scan Computers UK: Computer Hardware - All - GPU - ATI but if you have upgraded the CPU and the RAM you would be far better of getting a new MOBO that has graphics built onboard, and have a PCI-E expansion slot - at least then when you want to upgrade you have the option to do so. let me know what socket your CPU is and I will have a look for something more viable. Can you also give a brief description of what you use the PC for - is it just internet and word docs as I think it would be with the spec you listed. -
A couple of weeks ago SanDisk criticised Windows Vista for not being optimized for solid state drives. Now Samsung seems to be confirming such claims, but it is also hoping to work with Microsoft in order to overcome these limitations. Windows, logically enough, has always been optimized to work with traditional hard drives. But the speed and way in which SSDs fetch and cache data are significantly different than that of rotating media, with SSDs having fewer but larger sector sizes that are unrecognizable to the OS – which results in inefficient SSD performance when slotted into a disk drive bay. Samsung didn’t reveal specific details, but some speculate there could be a fairly significant change in the way Vista works with storage hardware so that it can recognize an SSD with a 4K-byte sector size instead of just a hard disk drive with a 512-byte sector size. It will be interesting to see how any major revamps to Vista in this regard will affect SSD adoption in the consumer market – if at all.

It appears that Intel has set the brand-name under which it will market its processors based on the upcoming Nehalem micro-architecture. The new desktop parts will be known as Core i7 and should be introduced by Intel on Monday – although they won’t be available until the official launch in the last quarter of this year. Core i7 processors will be made using 45nm process technology and will have from 2 to 8 cores, triple-channel DDR3 memory controller with up to 1333MHz clock-speeds, and support for multi-threading technology. Three models will supposedly be available en-masse starting at the end of this year, including a 3.2GHz Extreme processor for high-end gaming desktops. The significance of the i7 moniker remains unknown at this time but hopefully we’ll find out early next week.

Far Cry 2 has made some interesting appearances over the past few months, with a few teasers showing off the new Dunia engine built for the game in addition to a bit of actual gameplay footage. The game does look impressive, but what many fans are probably wondering is exactly what the system requirements would be to run the upcoming title. Fortunately Ubisoft has come out with an answer today, in both minimum and recommended varieties, and it looks like those who have been playing modern games on their two or three years old rig should at least be able to cope with the open-world shooter. This is certainly welcome news but if you are hoping to run this game smoothly with all the eye candy turned, then you’ll at least need a dual core processor, midrange GeForce 8-series graphics card (or even an ATI X1900) plus 2 gigs of RAM. Minimum requirements CPU: Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz, Pentium D 2.66 Ghz, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or better RAM: 1 GB Video card: NVidia 6800 or ATI X1650 or better Shader Model 3 required 256 Mb of graphic memory Media reader: DVD-ROM Hard drive space: ~12 Gig or HD space. (tbd) Recommended CPU: Intel core 2 Duo Family, AMD 64 X2 5200+, AMD Phenom or better RAM: 2 GB Video card: NVidia 8600 GTS or better, ATI X1900 or better 512 Mb of graphic memory Sound: 5.1 sound card recommended Supported Video cards: NVidia 6800, NVidia 7000 series, 8000 series, 9000 series, 200 series. 8800M and 8700M supported for laptops. ATI X1650 – 1950 series , HD2000 series , HD3000 series , HD4000 series .

IT system administrators will be extremely busy this month, with Microsoft announcing it is prepping 12 security fixes for its next Patch Tuesday release – seven of which are labeled as “critical” and have the potential to allow remote code execution. Four of the seven critical updates address vulnerabilities in Access, Excel and PowerPoint, while the remaining three target Windows, Internet Explorer and Media Player 11. The five less serious “important” flaws cover vulnerabilities in Windows, Outlook Express and Windows Messenger. As usual, Microsoft divulged very little about each update, limiting the disclosure to naming the affected software and describing only in general terms the nature of the bugs. Starting October, however, the company will take a major shift in its security strategy by giving security vendors earlier access to technical details of it's monthly security patches for them to get ahead of attackers.

Transmeta said Thursday that the company had licensed its LongRun technology to Nvidia, providing the graphics chip maker access to low-power technology. Nvidia will pay Transmeta $25M for a non-exclusive license to the technology, which includes both the LongRun and LongRun2 technologies. Since bowing out of the chipset market in 2005 - a process it completed in 2007 - Transmeta has since focused almost exclusively on licensing its existing low-power technologies to other chip firms. In 2007, AMD invested $7.5M in the company. Later that year, Intel agreed to pay a one-time fee of $150M and $20M per year for five years to settle a patent suit. "We are very pleased to have achieved this license agreement with Nvidia," said Les Crudele, president and chief executive of Transmeta, in a statement. "We believe that this agreement both illustrates the value of Transmeta's intellectual property and technologies to our industry and realizes for Transmeta stockholders an immediate return from the strategic licensure of our intellectual property rights." Low-power technologies could be used in a variety of ways, both to improve Nvidia's mobile chipsets and graphics chips, as well as its handheld offerings and MIDs.Perhaps more importantly, the technology might be used as a counter for the thermal issues Nvidia recently experienced. Intel says it plans to roll out a bevy of midrange processors, all built on its new 45-nanometer manufacturing process, on Monday. Game computer vendors, among others, are expected to follow suit with new machines. http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bto/20080808/intel-core-2-quad-2-small.jpg Intel Core 2 Quad processor (Credit: Intel) The Core 2 Quad Q9650 heads the list of updated chips, according to Intel. It has a core clock speed of 3GHz, a 12MB level-2 cache, a 1333MHz front-side bus, and is rated at 95 watts. Generally, the larger the level-2 cache memory, the better the performance. The front-side bus (FSB) carries data between the processor and other silicon. Several retailers already have the new processors listed on their Web sites. TheNerds.net has the Q9650 listed at $576, one of the lowest prices on the Web. Retailers' prices are typically higher than Intel's official list prices, so the prices announced by Intel Monday will likely be lower than those retailers' offerings. A bit further down the list is the Core 2 Quad Q9400 with a clock speed of 2.66GHz, 6MB of cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. This has a list price of $284 on TheNerds.net Core 2 Duo chips will also get a refresh. The E8600 has a clock speed of 3.33GHz, 6MB of cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. The E7300 runs at 2.66GHz with 3MB of cache, and has a 1066MHz FSB. Intel to release new midrange chips Monday | Nanotech: The Circuits Blog - CNET News.com

It just sounds like they have moved the my documents for backup purposes - you can set the my documents to be stored elsewhere - I cannot remember off hand - but thats what it sounds like the company have done - we do it at our place - everyones documents are on one HDD and its just for recovery if needed. As Danzil has said you should just be able to move the my documents - and then if you save something to the my documents it may refuse and give an error saying - cannot find folder in.............etc If thats the case as Danzil has said a redirection has been placed on the folder.

Intermittent Internet Connection

Mango - NETGEAR routers need the MAC address of the PC's/laptops that access them - some companies depending on who you get the router from will supply you with a disc and then you put that in each PC/Laptop and it does this for you. I have seen many people in similar circumstances in terms of connection dropping and with NETGEAR routers this is the most common reason - look in the routers home page and look for the option - more than worth a look even if it's just to rule out. -
Shrimply - windows own burning programs are not very good at all - there are FREE versions of NERO that you can get - NERO is a fantastic utility and I use it over any other burning software - I know this seems more of a cop out but you are far better off staying away from any burning utilities in windows.

Also make sure that you plug it into the middle connector of the IDE cable - If your friend has an HDD and a CDRW/DVDRW his HDD is probably set as the master and the CDRW/DVDRW the slave - if it is the other way round he will have to change his setup. Or hope that his Motherboard has 2 IDE spaces on the MOBO for cables. and then you can just plug yours into the middle one and leave the MASTER one blank.

Intermittent Internet Connection
Dalo Harkin replied to Mango76's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Right since you have reset the router you NEED to add the PC's MAC code to the router in order for it to access the net - this is VERY common on NETGEAR routers. in a command window (cmd.exe) type in ipconfig and then scroll to the very top there will be a MAC code (this is your computers MAC code) write it down will be in the format 12:AB:11 etc go into the routers home page which will be an ip address will be in the book you got or under the router. when in the router page there is a place for adding the MAC code to the page and this will then allow your PC to access the router (hopefully :)) -
